Hi all, I wanted to make official comment on the western release of Anarchy Reigns (known as Max Anarchy in Japan).

First of all, we are done with all international versions of Anarchy Reigns. The delay is not due to further development on the game.

Also, even though the release dates will be different, the content of both the Japanese and Western versions will be 100% the same.

Today's Q1 2013 release news was the first we'd heard of it. Even if we wanted to, we can't comment as we're (still) in the dark officially.

There's some concern that this will push back the Japanese release date. It will not. The game will be released in Japan on July 5, 2012.

Finally, I want to sincerely apologize to all the fans worldwide for all the confusion this situation has caused.

Even though we are the game's developers, we can only do so much about this...

However, we hope you can continue to support Anarchy Reigns and look forward to playing it with us in the future. Thank you.

They wouldn't be in this financial mess if they actually advertised any other game that does not have a blue hedgehog in them. No seriously, they had triple A IP's like Vanquish, Bayonetta, Yakuza, and Phantasy Star and they have not done shit to advertise them and then released the damn game against heavy competition to boot(Bayonetta went against God of War 3 for example). They are doing the same with the Cave as well. So fuck them.

Not updating Anarchy Reigns for nine months since it's confirmed delaying last year. Nothing. Not even a mention of it, while Japan has been pushing it's publicity all the way to high heaven.

And missing out on the one opportunity where Sega could have actually redeemed their shit situation, only to fumble as embarrassingly as Nintendo did during E3, missing the winning shot even when there is no goalie around.

It's not like early 2013 will be the designed release window for anticipated titles such as God of War, Bioshock Infinite, Last of Us, Ninokuni, Tomb Raider, Aliens and the usual last minute delays of Fall 2012 games that get moved every year.

I'm sure SEGA will ensure AR has all the space and market awareness it needs to shine.

Remember Sega of America, Sega of Europe and Sega of Japan, even though they work together with the same name doesn't mean they are completely whole. Sega of Japan has way more enough budget to advertise the crap out of Max Anarchy while the others don't.

If Sega of Japan starts giving Sega West money, they can be in the same position as Sega America and Europe because themselves will have no money.

It's a shame this has been moved to Q1 2013, but what would you rather want. Anarchy Reigns or Sonic 4: Ep II & Transformed. Which one of these is going to give Sega the most money?

Cutting and editing existing trailers to put on their channel is not a big deal. Really, it isn't. They didn't even bother doing that of all things.

I'd rather want Sega to not compete with DmC, Bioshock 3, Metal Gear Rising, Tomb Raider, Gears of War, The Last of Us, Colonial Marines and every other goddamn game that's made 2012 into a pathetic, lackluster year of gaming.

I'm already pissed at Sega for loving to waste money, but that won't change the fact that I'm even more pissed with them for deciding that now would be the best time to go back on it.

On a slightly more positive note, I like how active the online community is on the demo; I'm getting the piss beaten out of me by different people every round! It's great!

First impression when starting the game: This game has the single best title/menu screen in any game ever. Like seriously, this is the stuff you expect would expect Smash Bros would be like.

The game's story is bigger than I thought it'd be but it's clear that it was never the main focus when Platinum was making the game. Just like Vanquish, the game drops you square into a universe where your suspension of disbelief has to accept the world being fucked up the ass, a bunch of Noodle Incidents and events that kind of pretty much don't make any sense and characters that are never fleshed out or dropped in from nowhere. In fact, the game's introduction, unlike Bayonetta's clipshow, is just a scrolling text detailing how the world descended into anarchy and whatever.

The story is presented in two campaigns; White Side and Black Side. You'll have to play through both campaigns whichever one you choose, but depending on which side you chose when starting the campaign, the outcome of the story ends slightly differently. During White Side you play as Leo, a young blood marine, while during Black Side, you play as Jack. Leo, who's part of the Bureau's Strike One division is tasked to hunt down Maximilian Caxton, who was his former captain and something of a father figure for Leo, but apparently went mentally unstable and betrayed his division. Jack on the other hand, who's a chaser and who's job involves finding people, is on a job from Max's daughter to locate him and return him home, despite Jack holding a grudge against Max for being the suspect behind the death of Jack's adoptive daughter Stella.

The campaign is set up not that different from the likes of MadWorld, as you roam the battlefield, dispatching enemies and mutants to increase your score and unlocking missions. Free Missions are smaller challenges involving killing a certain amounts of enemies, or even some creative ones where you have to transport items to certain locations. The missions are a tad repetitive but varied enough to keep you interested. The main missions are essentially boss fights, with rare exceptions. Half of the cutscenes in this game are presented in visual novel-style cutscenes which are pretty fucking cheesy because of the lip-syncing being completely off as it was done after Japanese voices. The dialogue is also incredibly cringeworthy at times, even though I found myself largely enjoying a lot of the scenarios during Black Side. The campaign is essentially like Vanquish a Score Attack-ish run through and to add onto the different elements of "sides", the massive stages are all practically the same, but with completely different divisions. As an example, in the White Side version of the second stage you mostly spend your time on an Oil Rig while in the Black Side version you're right across it at the run-down harbor, but both sides allow you to explore the aircraft carrier that resides inbetween. I'd have to say that I generally found White Side the harder side.

I should probably mention, Black Side is essentially a MadWorld reboot. This is the campaign where all the returning MadWorld characters appear in. You play the main campaigns as Jack and Leo, but in a few missions it becomes optional (and one mandatory I believe) to play as other characters. In White Side the main playable characters are Leo, Sasha and Nikolai while during Black Side, the main characters are Jack, Baron and Mathilda, although despite this other characters do become available to tussle as.

The best part about this game's setup is it's fantastic selection of characters. The story is lackluster and not very fun, or even very long, but the scenarios and the characters themselves are for the most of the part fun. You've got pretty much every token character in here. Leo as the token good guy, Jack as the token anti-hero, Baron as the token black guy, Nikolai as the token Russian etc. and they're all written well enough to stand out on their own. The actual cutscenes are also fucking fantastic.

Where the game definitely comes alive though is in the game play, and it's clear Platinum put in so much heart into the game when making it. This is a game that truly breeds on the multiplayer and is the most original and uniquely designed multiplayer I've seen. I hope this game really picks up when it releases in the west cause the modes and the game play is big enough for this to last months, quite possibly years. Battle Royale (12-16 Free-For-All), Team Deathmatch (4 vs 4), Tag Battle (2 vs 2 x 4), Tag Deathmatch (2 vs 2), Deathmatch (4 Free-For-All), Cage Match (1 vs 1), Capture the Flag (4 vs 4), 3-Team Capture the Flag (2 vs 2 x 3, one flag), Team Battle (4 vs 4, Squad Leader kills only), Death Ball (4 vs 4 Combat Football) and Survival (3 vs Horde). There's enough in here to suit any one, and had this game only had local multiplayer, it would have been the perfect party game, and would have been a fantastic competitive game.

My only real beef is the lackluster single player but when the fantastic filled multiplayer is filled to the brim with perks, characters, styles, levels, game-changing stage events and so much more, it's pretty much a game of the ages. By far my two favorite characters as of now are Ai Rin and Bayonetta.

This game is really the biggest ball of fun I've ever had with a game in forever, and for Sega to not release this in the west is a fucking sin. I don't regret my import, at all. I'd say apart from Bayonetta, this is Platinum's best game yet.

So I finally beat the game; I've been staving off the single player until yesterday because... well, long story. As for my review of the game, well, see Carbo's post- that's pretty much how I feel about it to a T. The story is what you'd expect from Platinum- you're dropped like a rock into a universe where nothing is clearly explained and everything is awesomely insane. It takes an interesting direction with the story and frames it into two parallel perspectives that come together in the end, Sonic Adventure 2 style. Unfortunately, it tends to drag; despite having some awesome and varied missions, the story doesn't feel like it leads up to anything important; both perspectives basically revolve around each side chasing the same guy and spoiler alert: you catch him. The characters are enjoyable, but not really fleshed out enough. It's kind of the same problem Vanquish's story had; it uses its intense quantity of action and movement to mask the fact that almost nothing really happens; you run into a bunch of characters and fight them, but in the end, you did what you came to do, no more, no less. That being said, the campaign was still deeper than I had expected; games with such a heavy emphasis on multiplayer tend to half-ass the single player and while that was kind of the case, it still had pretty varied and enjoyable missions.

As for the multiplayer, good god, where to begin? It's pretty much what you'd expect from a game with "Anarchy" in the title- absolute fucking chaos everywhere you look. Satellite lasers. Drone strikes. Sea monsters. Black holes. Mutants. The whole nine yards. You've got a huge open environment where these crazy scenarios pop up now and then to try and mess everything up. It's like City Trial from Kirby's Air Ride, but with violence instead of driving. The whole game is incredibly unbalanced, but the good kind of unbalanced that keeps it interesting. It all can become pretty overwhelming. Battle Royale (12-16 player free for all) is just too much for me, because there's a ton of players all playing for keeps and you just can't do anything without getting ambushed. But at the end of the day, it's a pretty addicting game that is guaranteed to keep your interest and I definitely recommend it.

So I'm thinking about importing this... But theres a few problems.

When it comes to importing PS3 games to the UK, it's not very easy, mainly because due to an old court ruling (long story) a lot of places won't do it, and those who do want quite a bit of a markup on the base price, without adding postage.

So... can anyone sorta point me in the right direction to get a copy? And is Bayonetta on the disk or is it a DLC code?

Ordered from here with FedEx shipping and got the game three days after it departed. The DLC codes are with most of the first printings so it may very well be limited but it seems like they're still offering them.

Well it may have the code in it, not only pre-order copies get the code. First printing run games have it as well. Not sure how long a single printing run for a game in japan lasts though.
