About this blog

A blog dedicated to the ongoing 52 Game Challenge, I'll be going more in-depth with my thoughts on every game I complete for the challenge!

Game 36 of 52: Sonic the Hedgehog 4 - Episode 1 - 20/04/24

Let me give you all a piece of advice. Do not 100% this game twice in the one night. It is not a good idea. Now that we've gotten that informational PSA out of the way, let's get into the thoughts on what is one of the most infamous Sonic games in the entire series, especially in a post Mania and Superstars world. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 was a unexpected game for me, completely unplanned, until I suddenly decided I wanted to finish up some unfinished business for this challenge.

Game 35 of 52: Fortnite - Chapter 5, Season 2 - Myths and Mortals - 16/04/24

Back again with a brand new battle pass, we're returning to the very first game that got a entry within this series - it's Fortnite Chapter 5 Season 2! So, what do I think? ... it's fine. yeah, it's...yeah, it's fine. Alright, well no, that's not fair. I do actually think that it's still a pretty fun update, all things considered. Mount Olympus and the Underworld is really interesting additions to the island map, and the gameplay is still as fun as ever, really.  S

Game 34 of 52: Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League - 15/04/24

Well, when it came to coming back to the Arkham series, I can't really say I was expecting this one to be the game to shepherd that return, but hey, I had some reward points saved up that gave me a really good discount on the deluxe edition at launch, and having liked the Avengers game, and I really liked the Arkham series of course, I decided that despite the years of negative press, the leaks that caused more hatred, and then the sheer anger that was thrown at the game upon release, I would ge

Game 33 of 52: Shrek 2 (Game Boy Advance) - 14/04/24

So this one might be a bit of a odd addition to the challenge, especially considering it's the handheld version of Shrek 2, compared to the more well-known console version that's regularly regarded as one of the better licensed games, especially as a co-op beat 'em up. However, while I do also have fond memories of that game, and we'll almost certainly be talking about that one at some point during this list.  However, I feel that this game honestly gets pretty overlooked, all things consid

Game 32 of 52: Sonic Heroes - 12/04/24

With the Big challenge that we did in celebration of Sonic Stadium's Big X prank this year, I decided to fire up Sonic Heroes to fulfil the challenge requirements, and since I'd been meaning to get around to playing through Heroes, I decided to go ahead and run through it while I was at it.  Sonic Heroes is probably the Sonic game I have the most history with, as it was my first Sonic game ever. Where back in the early 2000s, I went round to a friend's house and played the game a ton, even

Game 31 of 52: Megamind Ultimate Destruction - 02/04/24

I shall now give everyone a moment to laugh at the very well thought out joke of using a image from the recently released Megamind VS The Doom Syndicate due to it's bizarre ties to the video game. ... ... Alright, we're done? Good!  Unfortunately, that's about the only interesting thing about this game. With the unfortunate sequel to one of Dreamworks' best movies - Megamind VS The Doom Syndicate having been announced a few months ago, and bizarrely reusing the villain group

Game 30 of 52: The Simpsons Hit & Run - 26/03/24

The Simpsons was pretty much a staple in my house when I was a kid. In the UK and Ireland, if you grew up in the 2000s, there is almost no way you didn't make a event out of watching the show on Channel 4 at 6pm every day, possibly catching a second episode on RTE2 at 6:30pm, and if you were lucky, catching a marathon of episodes on Sky One almost right after. I had several VHS tapes which contained a random assortment of four episodes based on a theme. I loved seeing the Treehouse of Horror epi

Game 29 of 52: Jak & Daxter The Lost Frontier - 22/03/24

If anyone knows me, they should've knew my boys, the demolition duo themselves, Jak & Daxter were going to show up in this challenge at some point or another. What people might be shocked (and perhaps horrified) to see is that it wasn't any of the original trilogy, nor Jak X, or even the excellent spinoff title Daxter that was the first outing, but it is instead the most controversial entry of the entire series - Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier, as created by High Impact Games. But with

Game 28 of 52: Skylanders Superchargers - 18/03/24

Skylanders, Skylanders, Skylanders. This series and I has some history. Back when Skylanders was releasing, I was one of the people who really did not care for it at all. I was a Spyro fan. I had played a lot of the Spyro series, and even as a kid when Skylanders was coming, I was amongst the crowd who saw the Spyro redesign and hated it.  I got the first game for Christmas that year, and while I actually found it a pretty alright game at the time, I never actually got around to finishing i

Game 27 of 52: It Takes Two - 18/03/24

Well, with the Mega Man World series having now wrapped up once and for all, it's time to start jumping back into non-Mega Man titles, and here's one that's been on the bucket list for quite awhiles. It Takes Two is a co-op puzzle platformer that you've probably heard of before, because it won a massive number of awards back in it's release year for it's many creative levels, puzzles, and it's incredibly charming and uniquely quirky nature. That's all I knew about it, so I was going into this ga

Game 26 of 52: Mega Man V (Game Boy) - 18/03/24

Finally, we've come to the last of the Mega Man Game Boy series. It's been a pretty surprising journey all around. From a unremarkable series, to a sudden ambitious hit in the span of one game. Mega Man V is possibly the most famous of all of these games, especially given how unremarkable it's NES numbered counterpart is. Whereas that game is more of the same, Mega Man V is regarded as one of the most ambitious Game Boy games. One that took everything this development team has learned over the M

Game 25 of 52: Mega Man IV (Game Boy) - 09/03/24

Sigh. We went from meh to peak, now we must go from peak back to meh. Yet another Game Boy retrend, yet another inferior clone of a superior ga- *plays game* Well shit, the Game Boy series suddenly has hands. The jump between Mega Man III and Mega Man IV is night and day. Whereas the previous games by this team just felt like passionate fans trying their best to adapt a game to lower-spec hardware, and just kind of doing a good job with what people expect, Mega Man IV actuall

Game 24 of 52: Mega Man Powered Up - 08/03/24

Right from one of the most forgettable Mega Man games straight into absolute peak Mega Man. When I was replaying so much of the Mega Man series this year, I had to replay this one. It's one of my absolute favourites of the entire series and one of the first Mega Man games I played. Released on the PSP back in 2006, Mega Man Powered Up is a full blown remake of the original NES Mega Man game, and frankly - the best way to experience this game in any form. Not only does it have a Classi

Game 23 of 52: Mega Man III (Game Boy) - 07/03/24

Well, here we are again with another Mega Man game, and boy, if I didn't have anything to say about Dr. Wily's Revenge, I'm certainly not gonna have much to say here about Mega Man III. But hey, we might as well give it another shot, right?  So what's the story this time? Well, more of the same I guess on a even lesser scale. This go around, Wily's for some reason taken over a oil platform and has converted it to gather energy from the Earth, and as usual, it's up to Mega Man to go and knoc

Game 22 of 52: Mega Man II (Game Boy) - 06/03/24

So, we now have the second entry in the Game Boy series, and one that actually has a story behind it! So, Mega Man II shares a bit of a similarity with Mega Man 3. In that it's a pretty rushed and unfinished game, outsourced to a different company than the team who developed the first Game Boy title and unlike Mega Man 3, this one is not particularly well liked whatsoever. Typically called out for having a screwed up difficulty balance, the same issues as Mega Man: Dr. Wahwee's Revenge, and bad

Game 21 of 22 - Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge (Game Boy) - 05/03/24

So, returning to the Mega Man series, we've come to a series that I've never actually played before - the Game Boy Mega Man titles (or as known in Japan - Mega Man World). I honestly know surprisingly very little about the Game Boy titles, beyond knowing that it's where Quint originates (for one game, where he was one of the most infamously piss easy bosses in the entire series), and that Mega Man 5 is where the Stardroids originate, and that it's a legitimately fantastic game.  So, when th

Game 20 of 52: Mario VS Donkey Kong (Switch) - 29/02/24

Mario VS Donkey Kong is a game that I have a little bit of a odd history and nostalgia with. While I never actually played the original, I did have a Game Boy Advance around the time that the game, along with Mario Party Advance released, and I used to see it in the Argos catalogues back in the day, and was always interested by it. A 2D Mario game where you go up against Donkey Kong? My parents had given me two little handheld Game & Watch games keychains featuring Mario and Donkey Kong befo

Game 19 of 52: Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins - 26/02/24

So, next up on the Mario series for the challenge, I decided I wanted to quickly run through a game that I had heard a lot about, especially since it had dropped on the Game Boy Online service when it launched. So with that, I decided to play Super Mario Land 2. Famous for being probably the most bizarre Mario game until Super Mario Wonder would later come and dethrone it so many years later, Super Mario Land 2 is a strange half-step towards traditional Mario gameplay, and doing it's

Game 18 of 52: Mega Man 6 - 26/02/24

Finally, we arrive at the end of the NES portion of the Classic Mega Man series, and thankfully, I actually have a bit to say about this game, since it actually tries to do some new things, rather than rehash a lot of things compared to Mega Man 5. This time around, Mega Man finds himself entering a robot tournament run by the mysterious Mr. X, who suddenly reveals he was using the tourney as a means to get a army of robot masters from all across the world in order to take over the planet,

Game 17 of 52: Tekken 8 - 24/02/24

So, taking a break from all of the retro stuff, we're delving into the latest entry into the Tekken series, and the next chapter of the Mishima family drama with Kazuya and Jin. Now, Tekken is a interesting series for me. I am not a particular fan of fighting games. I hate having to dedicate hours on end to learning combos and mechanics, and I hate how in doing so, in most circumstances, you basically guarantee victory in most matches. It's all skill, but it's skill that comes from a lot of time

Game 16 of 52: Mega Man 5 (NES) - 21/02/24

The Classic Mega Man marathon continues on with Mega Man 5, and this game sure is a Classic Mega Man game. What do I mean by that? Well, if I could describe it in a short, snappy video: We've been through a lot in the Classic series since we began this marathon. We've had stories of Mega Man 1's failure, Mega Man 2's grand comeback, Mega Man 3's unfortunately rushed status mixed with overambition to make something bigger than previous games, and ultimately, Mega Man 4's achievemen

Game 15 of 52 - Mega Man 4 - 21/02/24

We're back to the Blue Bomber with Mega Man 4, even if it was a unintentionally early return! Upon finishing up the Wily Wars, I soon came to discover that the Legacy Collection had been updated with a new CPU speed option, which means you can finally play the classic series without dealing with the godawful slowdown that drags Mega Man 3 and 4 to near unplayable levels at points. With this information now in hand, I decided I would continue on the Mega Man series run with Mega Man 4! So la

Game 14 of 52 - Kirby's Adventure - 20/02/24

One of my favourite NES games, and one of the latest ones at that, Kirby's Adventure is one of the most ambitious, colourful, and fully featured NES games to release on the entire system - where much like Super Mario Bros 3, it would act as the foundation for a lot of the series' tropes for years to come, although that can also unfortunately be to the game's detriment too.  The first sequel to Kirby's Dream Land, Adventure is one of the last Nintendo releases for the NES, dropping in

Game 13 of 52 - Super Mario Bros 3 - 18/02/24

Last in the current run of Mario games for this portion of the challenge, we have one of the most popular entries in the entire Mario series. The one that really properly introduced most of the structure we would see in 2D Mario for decades to come. If you think to most Mario tropes, there's a good shot that this is the one where it originated from. By this point, Mario fever was practically in full swing now, to the point that the movie The Wizard basically exists for the sole 5 minu

Game 12 of 52 - Super Mario Bros 2: Mario Madness - 17/02/24

So, following the utter disaster that was the Lost Levels, here we are with the Mario Bros 2 that the US and other territories received - Super Mario Bros 2: Mario Madness. With Nintendo deciding they can't release the Lost Levels due to it's difficulty, and it's copy and paste of the original's assets, that meant when it came to releasing the long-awaited sequel of Super Mario Bros to other countries, they opted for...another route - taking a non-localised game, change out the sprites and asset
