Windmill Isle...? blink.png

Okay, NOW I am disappoint. Unless they turn it into some awesome water level (which, judging by there being bouncy bubbles in the trailer, they might do) then it's a serious let down. At least give us Dragon Road or Cool Edge if you're going to pick from Unleashed, those stages are way more awesome.

On the plus side, Tropical Resort footage looks very nice. Very nice indeed.

EDIT: Can't quite make it out for definite, but judging by the HUDs, it looks like Classic Sonic will get the Burst Wisp in Tropical Resort and Modern Sonic will get Laser. Sweet.

The cannon in Windmill Isle, which I assume shot the bubbles, kind of reminds me of the cannons in Pirate's Island. I wonder if Modern Sonic will get ones that shot water grind rails.

Windmill Isle? The hell?! I hope they add some water sections. Then it would kind of look like Water Palace :-/

If any level is going to have water, It would be Emerald Coast, and with the Lazyness of the level selection we have, I seriously think that They're just going to copypaste the Classic Levels with vaguely fitting Levels from the Advances/Rushes/Pocket Adventure/Whatever

Called it...?

Wow, "History of the First Stage" seems to be a much more fitting title for this version than "Blue Adventure".

Suddenly the "History of the First Stage" name makes for a better subtitle than "The Blue Adventure" for the 3DS version.

I said it first.

I feel like punching the person who thought windmill isle would be a good choice. That and mushroom hill.

It was so obvious that they'll choose Windmill Isle. Why did I even hope for Cool Edge? *sighs* Oh well, lets hope that they at least put some Rush references in the levels.

Maybe the visuals would be better if there were SOME more houses in the background of White Island/Windmill Isle.

But Dimps's definition of visuals is: sea with a few random objects spliced in.

I find it to be a good idea to take a step back and look at all the stages in a row, to get a visual feel for the flow of the game:

buMBQ.jpg

Overall, it isn't as awful as people are making it out to be. The first three stages, at least, are varied. Tropics, casino, jungle. But things get samey when Emerald Coast arrives. Far too similar to Green Hill in my opinion. At least the HD version mixed things up with Seaside Hill, by making it more of an Ocean Palace than GHZ remix. Radical Highway isn't too bad, but like Casino Night, it's a nighttime stage with red and yellow as the overriding colors. Why not Pyramid Cave instead? It's a Sonic stage, it has great music and introduces a desert motif. Apatos is a fun stage, but looking at it here, it's too much like GHZ and Emerald Coast. Blue skies, water and cliffs in the background. The white architecture and windmills are the only new thing. Tropical Resort looks great, but again it has that nighttime setting seen in two other stages, neon signs a la Casino Night and palm trees as also seen in three other levels (yeah, I counted CNZ's neon trees).

Not bad, but not great. Easy solution would be to give us Red Mountain (volcano trope), Pyramid Cave (desert trope) and Holaska: Cool Edge (winter trope). Instead it's more sunny tropics and nighttime stages. tongue.png

Eh? From what I see, the tropes are FAR more varied than the HD version.

Green Hill=Own Trope

Casino Night=Casino Trope

Mushroom Hill=Forest trope

Emerald Coast=Beach trope

Radical Highway=Urban trope

Windmill Isle=Island trope

Tropical Resort=Amusment Park Trope

On the other hand, the HD version has, what, 3 city levels?

Green Hill is a Tropical/Green trope

Casino Night is Casino

Mushroom Hill is Green/Forest

Emerald Coast is Tropical

Radical Highway is City

Windmill Isle Tropical/City

Tropical Resort is Tropical/Casino

The tropes do interweave, but I think they look different enough, although I'm not all too happy with some of the choices.

I'm not exactly very happy with the choices either. First stages everywhere :\. Tropical Resort looks BEAST though. There's like fire raining down when Sonic is grinding on those rails.

I guess Im the only one happy for this, I know cool edge or dragon road would be much better choices, but the music is awesome and the stage itself is pretty nice (heres hoping for the giant robot chase) and they might make it an aquatic stage too, The stage selection is far more varied than the console version IMO. And dont come with the "it looks like GHZ" it doesnt look like it at all, sure theres water but its a white-ish town with a sea view, its more about going around the town and hopefully getting on top of rooftops and such. Ill agree that I wouldve prefered dragon road, although because it IS a dragon road it wouldve been more linear than anything (as if it wasnt linear enough)

Im so calling that Modern sonic will play through night. By the way remember the werehog icon that was hidden in the demo? is the werehog even in the console version?

No. The only copied levels are Green Hill Act 1, Casino Night Act 1 and Mushroom Hill Act 1.

WHAT A TWEEST-- no really. I'm pretty much fine they didn't go such an extreme with Modern Sonic. Just picture Sky Babylon in Highway-in-the-Sky-O-Vision...

Sky Babylon already was a "Highway in the Sky"

I lol'd a little bit. I know what you meant but it came out a bit differently. xD

The Sonic Generations 3DS episode of Nintendo TV News is now on the EU Nintendo Channel. Half of the episode is about Zelda: Skyward Sword and the other half about Generations. There's a brief interview with Takashi Iizuka that reveals

nothing new

and the footage shown is from

the console version.

Totally worth the wait...

Ugh, always with these first stages....

I hope theirs some water travel in Windmill Island, it would be a perfect nod to Sonic Rush's Water Palace stage.

And the thing is, both Water Palace and Windmill Island are based after the Mykonos Islands in Greece.

Bleh, such poor stage choices for the most part.

It's a real shame that the one thing which finally got me to register for this forum is my disappointment at Generations 3DS.

I mean, seriously, what were they thinking? So many of the stages are first stages that the two which aren't feel out-of-place, and I doubt anyone would've ever been excited about this if they knew it was Sonic Generations: Grass Hill Zone Edition. I feel horribly disappointed with this, to the point where I genuinely think I may avoid it entirely, and this is speaking as someone who played all the Advance and DS titles. I could've put up with lame level design and rivals fought in recycled levels, since they clearly didn't have enough time to do a good job on this game, but a terrible level selection just kills the game for me. I just don't get any sense of progression if the level environments barely change. And what was up with the claim that this was a celebration of Sonic's handheld history? So far it doesn't have anything handheld about it - even the Modern gameplay's more like its console counterparts. That said, I think there was a rumour that this version got overhauled not far into development, so maybe they scrapped the handheld celebration idea and chose a considerably worse path instead. Don't know why it has the same rivals as the console version - I mean, different levels, different bosses, but then they couldn't be bothered to think of different rivals? It's not like Sonic has any shortage.

I guess there's still the bosses, though - which, contrary to impressions on previous pages, I'm pretty sure are the interstitial exclamation mark dots on the linear map. Given that the rivals are fought in particular zones rather than in their own unique environment, I'm fairly sure they'll be filed under those zones as missions of a kind, like in the HD version - so Metal Sonic is in the Casino Night menu, for instance, and Shadow in Radical Highway. And Silver in... Tropical Resort, I guess, even though he only made a cameo in the DS version. Oh, so that's how it's celebrating the handheld history! (Would be hilarious if Silver got his own level, but then knowing this version it'd probably be Soleanna, another seaside level...) So yeah, Big Arm is the Classic boss, and that just leaves the Dreamcast and Modern bosses, and finally Time Eater. People have guessed BioLizard for Dreamcast boss in this version, which makes a lot of sense; as for Modern, they'll probably bring back the Egg Nega Wisp, just to reinforce the DS-owner's impression of "Hey, didn't I just play this last year?"

After this I hope Sonic Team either let Dimps go - or let them go back to doing their own thing rather than making portable versions of console titles. I replayed Rush and Rush Adventure recently - the latter's just fantastic in terms of level tropes, and Marine isn't anywhere near as annoying as I remembered her being. Come on, Sonic Team. Let Dimps make a Sonic Rush 3. The number's right there in the 3DS's name and everything.
