If I could've chosen everything, it would've been more like this:

*post of suggestions that has nothing from either Rivals game*

You have my eternal rage :|

I'll take your eternal rage too because if it were up to me then you still wouldn't get Sonic Rivals stages.

Maybe Mystic Haunt, but that's about it. Even then Hang Castle / Mystic Mansion left more of an impression.

I don't understand why everyone wants Game Gear levels, Rush/Advance levels I understand, but why have Sunset Park over Ice Cap/Hydrocity? and even if we did have all handheld levels than that probably wouldn't change the list much, instead of first stages from the main series, we'd just have first stages from handhelds.

Same here. While I love a lot of Advance and Rush levels, i'd much rather see more iconic console levels make it in. Still, this list is a disappointment.

Like I said in my "stages I would choose" post for console stages. I would choose these for Handheld Stages.

Classic

Sonic Chaos

Sleep Egg Zone

Sonic Triple Trouble

Meta Junglira Zone

Sonic Blast

Blue Marine Zone

Dreamcast

Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure-

Bah forget it...my computer is about to make me destroy it with the Classic Sonic toy I have on my desk..

If they weren't doing the handheld history thing, then at least they should've tried to fill it up with games that weren't represented in the console version. Proper CD and 3 levels, for instance, maybe Secret Rings as well? I think it's silly to pretend that the 3DS version should be doing the same thing as the console version, since its remakes of levels from more recent games will actually amount to demakes. That's why the handheld history gimmick was a good idea; the games would have been not only relevant to players, but actually possible to graphically and technologically upgrade rather than downgrade.

May as well jump on the bandwagon and give my ideal level selection for the 3DS version. I'm honestly not too fussed that it's not focusing on handheld history, so all of my choices will be from the console games.

Classic

Sonic 1 - Green Hill Zone (it's the iconic Sonic level, not having it in would be blasphemy)

Sonic 2 - Casino Night Zone (another icon of the early Sonic days, the obvious second choice to Chemical Plant)

Sonic 3&K - Flying Battery Zone (3&K has some great levels but I just damn well love this one, plus the music is god-tier)

Dreamcast

Adventure - Emerald Coast (a bit similar to Green Hill, maybe, but it deserves a spot if only for the whale chase)

Adventure 2 - Metal Harbour (yet another level surrounded by water but it was so much fun in the original)

Modern

Secret Rings - Night Palace (epic stage theme, epic stage music, epic everything)

Unleashed - Dragon Road (my favourite stage second only to Rooftop Run, love the atmosphere of it)

Colours - Tropical Resort (awesome music, brilliant aesthetics, and LASER!!!)

(For Modern, it would either be a Secret Rings/Colours combo or Unleashed/Colours combo, can't quite decide which I'd prefer)

Not exactly the most varied list but that's my pick of the lot. There's a few others I wouldn't mind, like Ice Cap for Sonic 3&K or Terminal Velocity for Colours, but whatever.

You would choose something like this... THIS game? Over something from 8-bit Sonic 1/2!? *head explodey*

But since we're all friends and nerding, my list (in response to HD's choices) would have been:

CLASSIC:

Green Hill (I kind of want to say use the 8-bit "You Can Do Anything" theme for handheld respect buuuut original Green Hill is just a bit too iconic to ditch).

Casino Night

Ice Cap

ADVANCE:

Egg Rocket

Music Plant

Chaos Angel

MODERN:

Leaf Storm (boring but iconic I think)

Haunted Ship (only because Chaos Angel is too similar to my favourite, Sky Babylon)

Starlight Carnival

Howeveeeeer, working from the new perspective that 3DS is getting console levels, the latter two thirds of that list from me would go (working in response to HD's choices AND the idea that 3DS is only getting 7 zones):

DREAMCAST:

Emerald Coast (yeah this one is a bit too iconic, MAYBE Windy Valley as second choice)

Green Forest (argh more green levels but yes, iconic)

MODERN:

Dragon Road

Starlight Carnival

/nerdy listing post over

Radical Highway is much more iconic than Green Forest, and if you want to use the "It's a Shadow level" defense, we also have Metal Harbor, Pyramid Cave, Crazy Gadget, Final Rush. All of these are more iconic in reference to SA2, are Sonic stages, and would make for a much more varied List. I'd also swap out Dragon Road for Savanah Citadel.

Ah, to me, Green Forest was the best because it was the fastest. It really, REALLY wowed me when first played it. It was Sonic Adventure 2's Spagonia, kind of that "peak" of speed and style vs difficulty and complexity that you get halfway through a lot of Sonic games.

I wish they'd port this version to the Wii. The 3D on 3DS gives me an unbelievable headache (even turned right down) and I'm not paying for a console if I can't make use of it's selling points...

I actually like the level list, keeping in mind that (apparently) the levels ARE being pulled from the same games that were used for the level selection in the console version. The first 5 levels are great choices to represent the games they're from, and Tropical Resort could be an awesome final level if they treat it as a "fallen paradise", if you will, with the station becoming a living death trap as it falls apart (based on the meteors you're dodging on the grind-rails, it looks like that could be the case).

The only level I think was poorly chosen is Windmill Isle. It's just so bland, and Green Hill and Emerald Coast already serve a similar level theme. Plus, was it really THAT popular of a level? Savannah Citadel seems like it would have been a better choice all around. But overall.. it ain't a terrible list. I am a bit miffed that the Rush games pretty much got the finger, but what can ya do.

Thats like saying to get a PS3 and not use the blu ray player (which was its selling point) but its all about the games for me, not the graphics (which 3D is pretty much)

Not to go too far off topic, but most 3DS games have better alternatives on other systems for me, there are only one or two I'd buy the system for and I don't want to spend full price on a system with lower res graphics than my iPhone if I can't use the feature which makes it special.

Because quite a few levels can easily replace Ice Cap,

Name one.

there's nothing really that compares to Sunset Park

Really? because I thought it was a boring level with little of interest and absolutely horrible music, yes, the boss theme is a lot better, but I really don't think Dimps would have incorporated that aspect of the level into this game. Even if I did like Sunset Park, i'd much rather have Mystic Cave, Star Light and Ice Cap/Hydrocity/Flying Battery/Lava Reef than Sunset Park, Labyrinth and Gimmick Mountain.

While I agree that Sunset Park was a boring level (in fact I found Triple Trouble an absoloute slog in general - I can't believe that and Chaos were made by the same team as 8-bit Sonic 2), I'm sure they would have included the train. They didn't forget any of the key moments in the levels on the HD version, and they didn't forget the whale chase on Emerald Coast in 3DS.

It's true, they could easily stick a snowboard section on Ice Mountain, plus it has the better music of the two (sure Ice Cap is iconic but it's SO repetitive).

Just from handheld titles, Robotnik Winter, Ice Mountain, Ice Paradise and Twinkle Snow.

I'm sure they would add train parts to the level. Why not? It's one of it's most memorable things.

Really, ice levels are so identical ANY other ice level could replace Ice Cap.
