Sonic Adventure PSN/XBLA Port

I like Sonic's SOAP shoes, but then I love SA2 possibly as blindly as everyone seems like SA1, as it brought me back into the franchise. I thought it was really cool they gave his shoes a redesign just for one game like that.

I always thought that the SOAP shoes looked incredibly awkward (if not outright stupid) on Sonic's feet, but I did appreciate them for giving him the 'ability' to grind rails at the time.

By this point I've already gotten so accustomed to him grinding such rails with his regular kicks I don't think I ever want to see SOAP shoes again.

It's amusing though, whatever advertising campaign they were trying to do it didn't work. I had no idea what SOAP shoes were. I thought all the SOAP billboards were a made-up fictional design, and that Sonic's shoe redesign were just to keep his look fresh and add a bit of extra edge to the new, slightly lankier-than-SA1 character design.

Ah, well in that sense, I agree. I must ask though- what're some examples of re-releases being better than the originals?

Your point is noted. The Dreamcast for most games doesn't have anywhere near the same problem in regards to rereleases as, say, the Super Nintendo (why, yes, Nintendo. I would love to buy the terrible SNES version of Final Fight and SFA2 on VC instead of the not-terrible console and arcade versions. Thanks for asking).

Off the top of my head I can still think of a couple of examples, though. Skies of Arcadia is better in every way on the Gamecube than it was on the Dreamcast (except for music quality, but that was a technical issue rather than a developer screwup). I can also think of Ferrari F355 Challenge, which had more options and game modes on the PS2 version than on the DC version. There is also the obvious Shenmue II that you already mentioned, as well as a couple third party games that were originally released on the DC and later made their way to the PS2 in an updated form (like Code Veronica and Tokyo Xtreme Racer 2). In a perfect world, Sega would also release the first Crazy Taxi with the higher-quality assets ported from High Roller, with the upgraded city and better graphics engine (ditto for Crazy Taxi 2).

We've already gathered it doesn't exactly apply to DX- and with Crazy Taxi replacing the music, surely that's a bad thing too?

If it has the same type of custom soundtrack support as Fair Wars (as opposed to the kind on most PS360 games), it would be near as make no difference to being the same game.

It begs the question- what would happen to Sonic's SOAPs in a new SA2 release? I seriously doubt SEGA would pay for the branding a third time on a small download rerelease (SA2 and SA2B are different games), so they'd likely be replaced with his normal shoes, as in early versions, and the blimps and posters advertising SOAP would be retextured.

I think it's a moot point. SOAP tanked sometime in the mid 2000's. They got bought out by Heely's, and now the shoes are STUPID hard to get.

I think the shoes belong to Sega anyway. TMS surely had no problems using them for Sonic X.

Furthermore, Shadow's shoes are ALSO based on SOAPs (specifically the Broadside model, Sonic's are the Scorchers) and he's only changed up for the Riders games.

Next, if for whatever reason, if any port of SA2 is missing Sonic's SOAPs, then that's a deal breaker. Grinding has been epically retarded without them. (Except for Shadow)

Lastly, if said SA2 port has Sonic's SOAPs as an avatar reward, I shall equip them with the quickness. Never mind that they don't match my purple Decepticon Tee, I will be happily clashing!

At any rate it's not a moot point that the SOAP branding will have to change.

Aside from the graphics I never noticed any difference with the Gamecube version of SADX, aside from the inconsistent frame-rate I guess, which was at times much better than the Dreamcast version's frame-rate and at others worse, and that's apparently fixed here. Otherwise I never have noticed any glitches which weren't in the Dreamcast version. I always preferred the graphics of DX, though they were obviously very quickly updated so that the game didn't look too out of date when they migrated it over to the Gamecube.

Sonic Adventure 2 on GameCube, again I never noticed any differences, except for one problem where on occasion pressing the jump button would do a homing attack instantly, as if you double-tapped it or something, this rarely happened throughout most of the game except on that Egg Golem boss where it happened so often that a quite fun boss became a real frustration. Perhaps this only happened on the PAL version. I know it happened a little less often in 60Hz mode...

Cor... Please bring SA2 to PSN and XBLA... It would be so cool to own that game again and have it run in progressive scan. :)

That reminds me, the people running this on their 360s, I have a PS3 so I have to wait until Wednesday, perhaps you guys can tell me - does the game appear to be in a higher resolution? The screens I saw did have jagged edges but not as bad as they are on Wii games or whatever so I'm not sure if it's rendering in a higher resolution or what... If it's a port of the PC version I'm sure they could have it running at 1024x768 right?

It appears to me to be to be in a higher resolution than a Dreamcast outputting a VGA signal, or a Gamecube outputting component cables. It looks rather crisp and I don't recall jaggies. Definitely looks better than a Wii game in terms of crispness IMO. I think the high frame rate helps too.

I'm not an uber techie, but I'd say it looks very good.

PSN version to be released early?

So according to an announcement over at Sony, the PSN will be down tonight for maintenance. However this maintenance will go over the normal update time, so the normal PSN update will be going out earlier than normal. Meaning that Sonic Adventure should be out to download... Tonight!

Wow... that was unexpected.

lol!!!!

I wondered who that was. Darn, now when the SSMB Rep Gambling Casino opens I shall be one rep lower than I should.

Also I wish I knew what time this update would occur in the UK, I wouldn't mind being one of the first to unlock a said trophy.

From Sony Europe's Mike Kebby in the comments of the maintenance blog entry:

Posted on 20 September, 2010 at 3:51 pm by Mike Kebby

The store will publish on Wednesday as usual, it’s only the RDR DLC that will publish on the Tuesday.

It's up on the PlayStation Store now. It came an hour later than expected.

The PlayStation Blog update says that there's a demo for it but it's nowhere to be seen on the actual store. Don't know what the hell that's about.

The blog updater responded to someone's question about having no demo and said that it was delayed.. Whaaaa?

Man, I am so tired of Sonic Adventure bashing on other forums its driving me nuts. The game is far from perfect and hasn't aged well but its damn fun. The ports are good enough to enjoy SA on the this gens consoles for anyone on the fence.

Not even on the EU PS Store yet. Looks like we're gonna be waiting a bit for it.

Still not on the EU PS Store, but the Store update is on the EU PS Blog now. No mention of a demo or DLC though.

EDIT:

Mike Kebby of Sony Europe at PS Blog has replied about the DLC:

It looks like the Sonic Adventure DX Upgrade is out next week, though don’t hold me to this just yet.

Sonic Adventure is now FINALLY on the EU PS store for download.

lol and it's currently rated 5 stars by 5 people XD It's only been live for about 2 min!

Can also confirm that theres no DX download, so whats going on with that one Sega?

Whoa! Currently Sonic Adventure is outselling Earthworm jim. SA has 18 rates (you can only rate if you buy/download the game) Earthworm Jim has only 3!

Just downloading it now. No demo either. U.S. got the game, the demo and DX DLC this week, so I don't understand why EU has to wait for those 2 things

Come on download! I wanna get a trophy before shadz! And be the fastest for about... oh 3 min....

This is a bit odd... here is the description for Sonic Adventure in the PS Store.

"join sonic and friends as they embark on their first truly epic quest to stop Dr Eggmans most villainous scheme in the hit Dreamcast title Sonic Adventure. Coming soon to the Playstation Network""

Huh.... but.... it's out now... it actually says that on the full game download description.

Also... Sonic Adventure 29 out of 29 people rated 5 out of 5. (lol theres no way any of these people have played the game yet).

Earthworm Jim... only 3 people have bothered to rate it.

So then... What do I think of Segas new attempt at Sonic adventure?

It is the worst game I have played.

Oh you'd like more than that?

Right then.

The Introduction movie is such poor quality that at times it looks like a blurred mess, at points it's completely unwatchable.

The new menus are so shit that they look like they were made by a child in Microsoft Paint who has no thumbs (I'll get a picture of this up in a moment).

The camera is actually worse than the DC version, I really don't remember it being this bad.

At points the PS3's controls don't seem to respond correctly if even at all. This is very noticable when trying to perform slight alterations in turning during the high speed moments on the first stage (wall run areas). This is very noticable in the second stage Windy Valley when trying to do a homing attack, it either misses the target completely or doesn't have the range to hit the target, despite being able to in the DC and Gamecube version.... This is very noticable when Sonic descides he's no longer going to follow the scripted windy path and falls off the stage... despite holding down the run button.

(In case you havn't guessed it gets worse as the game goes along).

Why the fuck are the camera controls not the right analogue stick is anyones guess.

The boarder is a fucking joke.

Conclusion: This port is shit, do not buy. I want my money back.
