Emblem showing up and then Sonic climbing out of it >>>>> whole logo fading in. Totally agreed, Lunar. But hey, that video was far from supposed to be shown- anything could be a placeholder.

I know, I know and I have faith in Sega doing the right thing XD If they don't I will still like the game, but be disappointed at the same time XD

The animation does kinda suck, but as others have noted, its only temporary. Hell, we weren't even supposed to SEE it. Hardly final; just a placeholder. It still looks badass.

No mather what you think of the game, from what we have seen, i think we can all agree that it is so freaking lovely that Sonic shut's the hell up!...at least so far.

A quiet Sonic is a good Sonic. Better than "Heh, Hah, HUH" every jump!

That's a picky example to use, but when its in-game at least, then yeah. Other than that, I'd like my Sonic to talk like the cocky bastard he is. B)

That's what i ment...

Can you say so next time? Saying this "i think we can all agree that it is so freaking lovely that Sonic shut's the hell up!...at least so far." broadens it to the WHOLE game instead of just the parts that you play the way I look at it.

That's not specific.

If I can make a point unrelated to the current topic.

Watching the video again, it looks to me like this game runs at more than 30fps..I'm not sure it's at 60fps but somehow definitely seems a lot smoother and more fluent than 30fps. When was the last time that happened? SA2?

Heroes, Shadow, 06 (well, it was supposed to), Unleashed PS3 (not 360), quite possibly the Riders games as well. Unless you were playing the PS2 versions of some of these titles, which ran much worse than their GCN/XBOX counterparts.

Heroes ran at 60 fps on the Gamecube and PC. Riders also I think but I guess it doesn't count.

I thought Unleashed PS3 was 30 fps, but rarely went up to 60 in random little spots?

Wasn't Unleashed built to play at 30 fps? I know i've read that somewhere but i seem to forget.

Yeah, I gotta agree there. I'm fine with him talking when the situation merits it, but he doesn't need to vocally express his every movement. Subtlety, subtlety, subtlety.

So yes, it's 60 but is hardly ever able to reach it.

If this game's developer can't get a game that is about 95% 2D to run at 60 FPS, there's a problem.

Unleashed on the 360 was locked at 30 fps, but would often dip lower. On the PS3, it was unlocked, and thus could reach 60 FPS, but it seldom actually did.

One time i noticed the 60fps was while entering the Holoska town hub. Running down the slope in the beginning of the hub in 60fps was so awesome :P

Yeah I am not sure where dull and lifeless is coming from either. This is a huge step up from what we have seen in recent titles. One of the things that turned me off from sonic advance were the cheesy new gen sonic graphics. It just didn't give the same vibrant feel of the old games. This matches the old games well by keeping things simple and clean.

And I have no idea where people are try to go with the grass/plastic thing. It is fucking grass in a video game, if you are complaining about that then you are a retard.

Clearly, you haven't actually looked at the bloody grass. Allow me to repost May's example:

I love Plastic.

If you hated the visuals in Sonic Advance, I cannot possibly see how this glossy, plastic mess looks any better to you. I mean, what the hell is up with the gloss on the side of the ground? The whole level lacks the vibrancy of the old games AS WELL. I mean, seriously. The colours are darker, and the shitty CGI removes whatever life and vibrancy it could've had, everything looks fake. I mean, really fake. It looks too freaking sterile, heck, it even lacks some neat little details the old games had. As I said before, it's like an environmental uncanny valley.

Breaking from SonicRetro!! IT'S NOT SONIC RUSH 3...

Okay. I don't even know how to start. But, here we go.

Early in the morning today, I, and a other few (un)lucky people, had the opportunity to playtest the X-BOX 360 version of the game. In fact, any of you could do it as well, provided you own a Developer's Console, or a J-TAGed system.

I'll try to give a very briefely analysis of what were my thoughts about this game.

Graphically (and artistically, I must say), the game is very beautiful, even thought I can't really eat that celshading effect they put in Sonic's model, to make it look like a differed shaded Genesis sprite.Something important to notice is that, the 3D models are not really 3D models, instead, they are sprites of pre-rendered 3D models. SO we are pretty much dealing with a 2D game here. That goes for everything else but Sonic, since I'm not sure as if Sonic is really a sprite itself, but I pretty much think it is. THat might explain the akward animations.

The level design. I played through Splash Hill Zone entirely up until Casino Street Zone. Splash Hill ZOne is pretty much Neo Leaf Forest Zone (for those who don't know, Sonic Advance 2's first stage). Everything about it looked like Leaf Forest. Hell, even the level art itself reminds Leaf Forest some way or another. The level design pretty much encourages the player to keep going to the right, except when the levels abruptuly decides to force you to go in the opposite direction by inserting unexpected walls, making you jump, jump to the left, jump to the right, keep running to the right. It is especially strange, considering the level layouts encourages you to keep running right. The acts are actually considerably huge in size, but quite short in time, much like Sonic Advance 2 stages. I don't remember any level especific gimmick on the first stage, which is pretty unfortunate. You gotta love Casino Street Zone, since it's freaking Casino Night Zone. It's exactly identical. The colors, the tiles, everything. The level layout however is much like Music Plant Zone from Sonic Advance 2. A level that right encourages speed. Ha, about the Special Stages, they are quite fun actually, it is Sonic 1's Distorted Dimension, but with a new twist: instead of controling Sonic, you control the stage itself. So yeah, my oversight was right after all. In terms of difficult, I found it harder than Sonic 1's Special Stages (and provided, they were rather easy). I belive they are going to be even fun/harder with the motion controls of the Wiimote/Six-axis/DualShock3, since you have to rotate the stage using the trigger buttons in the X-BOX 360 version (RT rotates to the right, LT to the left, etc). Looks like a pinball of sort. Oh, don't let me get started on the bossfight. You might already imagine how it is by now.

The gameplay is pretty solid, actually. Which is a great thing. However, the game pretty much have the physics of Sonic Rush. I hate I hate I hate I hate I hate, I can't stress enough how I hate the jump! Fucking jump! It's the worst jump I've ever seem in a Sonic game to date. Apparently they tried to mimic the 'the longer you hold down the jump button, the longer you accent' mechanic of the classic games, but as a result, they fucked the freaking cake with it. The jump is all over the place: if you rapidly tap the jump button, Sonic almost don't jump; if you hold a little and release, Sonic starts accending, but he breaks to the floor as soon as you release the jump button. If you hold the jump button all the way down, Sonic jumps like if he had touched a spring, he jumps so high and almost no gravity, it's like you are jumping on the freaking moon. And I thought the jump in the Rush series were bad. This one is even worse. The jump is so bad that I preffer to keep running right to win really. Don't let me get started on the spin dash. THe spin dash don't have enough power, no matter what. It behaves much like Knuckles' Chaotix spin dash. Running rewards you with much more speed than spindashing.

My final remark of this game? It's freaking Sonic Advance 2! It's written Sonic Advance 2 all over the place. It is Sonic Advance 2 all over again. In fact, they could have named this game Sonic High Speed, and I wouldn't mind it at all. But it is supposed to be Sonic fucking 4. To be honest, the name Sonic High Speed would fit this game better.

I am afraid to say that we are actually dealing with the very final product here, folks. Since the developers already sent the software for the Microsoft Evaluation Proccess. Additionally, the game's software was sent to ESBR game content analizys team. Considering the game is already been analized and rated by ESBR, the development team cannot overgo any significative change in the game, visually or otherwise, which therefore pretty much means that this is what the game looks like.

..apparently it's Sonic Advance 2...sigh...

Hey, it's just shiny grass. Shit's everywhere now. I've seen shiny TREES in Twilight Princess.

Also, I never thought of Mushroom Hill having GRASS. I always thought it was moss on bark or something, but I'm kinda biased in I hate the way it was sprited anyways (HEY GUIES! LETS RANDOMLY MAKE SQUARES OF RANDOM SIZES AND PLACE THEM IN SOME SORT OF GRASS/MOSS LIKE PATTERN BUT NOT REALLY)

Also, I think it's darker because he's under that there cave-like area, or behind the wall whatever it is. It might have the whole "realistic" lighting thing that games like ever since it was supposed to be in RE5. The title screen sure looked bright.

I also pointed this out in another topic. I noticed that the ground in sonic 4 looks really flat compared to the other 3 pics, where it's pretty hilly. I liked that.

Another something that resembles the rush series

Thanks for posting that :D

And.... wow. The level design sounds really.... I don't know... wasn't that how Sonic 3 worked a lot of the time? Still, the way he phrased it worries me... But I like the sound of the pre-rendered sprites w/cel shading. Though I know many will disagree with me, I think it helps give this title its unique look. The levels' motifs also sound really cool to me, and I'm eager to play 'em. Sure, they're rehashes (apparently), but in this ONE game, that doesn't bother me too much 'cause after a good chunk what we fans have been forced to endure as of late, a classic rehash is a breath of fresh air.

But FUCK, the physics aren't fixed? That's damning!!! That disappoints the hell outta me!

defeat.jpg

Dimps.... Sonic Team... who ever the fuck developed this.... you were SO close. The level themes, the special stages (apparently), the look, the attention to detail... so much like a Genesis title, but the physics are what make or break it.

And.... there's no way this is fake, right...?

...at least the special stages sound really good...

Well, if this turns out true, I gotta keep up my end of a bargain....
