The first issue of the Knuckles miniseries that would eventually lead to the spin-off Knuckles comic written by Ken Penders. This issue in particular features the first appearance of Enerjak.
Issue Summary:
The first issue of the miniseries contains the first part of the Rites of Passage arc, taking placing between Issue 36 and 37 of the main Archie Sonic comics, and follows up plot beats from the Knuckles Chaotix one-off special. The plot focuses on Knuckles attempting to find a fire-ant known as Archimedes after he had previously kidnapped the Chaotix, and used the knowledge of the Echidnas against Knuckles.
Knuckles does eventually manage to track the mysterious figure to a ancient conservatory used by the Echidnas, only to discover that the fire ant and the Chaotix are simply relaxing to dinner, Knuckles slowly realising that Archimedes isn't a villain, albeit annoyed with his ego.
Things however go from bad to worse when a mysterious figure appears before the group, revealing himself as the formerly defeated echidna known as Dimitri, who manages to reclaim his title as the ancient powerful being known as Enerjak. Easily dispatching all of them, Enerjak decides to make use of the Chaotix in his schemes for domination, while banishing Knuckles and Archimedes for their ancestors' role in his defeat, capping the issue off on a cliffhanger.
Reprints:
There's only one main form of reprint, outside of a once available digital release on Archie's app and Comixlogy, this being Knuckles the Echidna Archives Volume 1, which reprinted this issue, alongside Issues 2 and 3 of this miniseries, and the first three issues of the main Knuckles series.
