Silver the Hedgehog is a silver-furred hedgehog from the future, and justice-seeking time traveler. He was first introduced as an antagonist, having been tricked by Mephiles the Dark into believing that Sonic was the "Iblis Trigger", the cause of the the Flames of Disaster 200 years into the future. Silver eventually realizes Mephiles' trickery and teams up with Sonic and Shadow to stop him. Afterwards, Silver returns to his now peaceful future, occasionally returning to Sonic's time to aide the other in fighting world-threatening foes.
Overveiw
The silver-furred hedgehog hailing 200 years into the future, Silver is a recurring character in the series. His role is to protect the timeline by correcting the atrocities of the past, changing his era, or otherwise as a cameo character frequently interacting with Sonic and friends. His debut was Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 (2006), where he Travels back in time with Blaze the Cat to find and kill Sonic, tricked by Mephiles the Dark. Silver’s signature ability, Telekinesis, allows him to levitate objects and use them as projectiles to defeat enemies, or to move and fly. Described as “The hedgehog of justice”, he is straightforward, and never tells a lie. However, calling him a hedgehog of justice is a overstatement, as he wishes to maintain peace rather than to rid the world of evildoers.
Personality
Despise being from a devastated future, Silver is passionate and optimistic, determined to save his time however he can. Although he has a strong sense of justice, he can be naive and immature. He believes in standing up for those who cannot themselves - this led him to meeting Blaze, who was being teased for her pyrokinesis. He is often too trusting, making alliances and taking people’s word without question. He is a bit rash about his mission to protect the world, but it doesn’t make him incompetent - in Forces (2017), he calls him self not just an optimist, but a realist.
Relationships
- He is often partnered with Blaze the Cat after their duoship in Sonic the Hedgehog (2006). Blaze's role as being from Silver's time was retconned, as she is now solely the princess of the Sol dimension - regardless, Silver refers to her as a close friend, and are often seen spending time together in the IDW series.
- He returns in stories beyond his debut to help stop massive threats, like the Zombot virus, Time Eater, and Infinite. Despite being a hero, he is still a good-natured rival of Sonic.
- In the IDW comics, Silver looks up to Whisper, calling her the “Guardian Angel” after word of her heroism spread during Eggman's rule.
- Shadow is impressed with Silver, as he was able to use chaos control rather quickly, and takes him under his wing when traveling into the past.
- Despite their different lives, Espio and Silver connect in the IDW comics after Espio reminds him not to let his fear stop him from doing what's right.
- He greatly dislikes Mephiles, after he took advantage of his gullibility and sense of justice.
Appearances and Cameos
Since his first appearance in Sonic The Hedgehog (2006), he has mainly appeared in spin-offs and as a cameo character. He is playable in Sonic Rivals 1 and 2, and in the multiplayer modes of both storybook games. He is a racer in Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity, Sonic Free Riders and Sonic Team Racing. He appears as an playable athlete in the Mario & Sonic Series, and is a sub-boss in Sonic Generations in Crisis City (Console) and Tropical Resort (3DS). He also makes a cameo in Super Smash Bros. Brawl in the background of the Green Hill Zone Stage, and as a collectable trophy and sticker.
Transformations
Super Silver
Silver, like Sonic, can harness the power of the 7 Chaos Emeralds, entering the state Super Silver. He turns a golden color, with his senses empowered tenfold. He is invulnerable, and is able to fly without psychokinesis. A major downside, as with Sonic and Silver's super forms, is that the form consumes much energy and needs rings to be maintained.
Trivia
- Silver went through many changes through his initial design stages, one of which being an orange Mink named Vince after the city in Italy, where Soleanna is based on.
- As he comes from a grim future, he gets easily derailed from his mission to take in the smallest things, like innocent Chao playing, and even a desolate desert, calling it “so beautiful”.
- His thoughts can distract him from using his telekinesis.
- He doesn’t see himself as a hero.
