Metro - "Although Sonic the Hedgehog games have definitely improved in the last couple of years even the well-regarded Sonic Colours and Sonic Generations..."

No "Sonic hasn't been doing well" or any other variation? Mentioning Colors and Generations? Wow, this one's actually keeping track!

Metro: Thankfully though you only have to play as Sonic....

Well that didn't take long

Shacknews: omg! wow, these guys...live in like 2007-08

The Sixth-Axis: They seem to be living in 2001-02.

Shack News - "Fans will probably breathe a sigh of relief that the initial trailer doesn't feature any of Sonic's furry friends. However, given the number of other cuddly critters in the video, perhaps it's best to simply assume that Sonic won't be on this adventure solo."

This, but more notably the title of the link: "Sonic Lost World debut trailer restarts the Sonic Cycle"

Are these guys for real?  What are they living in 2008?

Honestly dood, your definition of Sonic-y sounds like something that was in the franchise but never really is what Sonic is all about. Sounds like you liked the era where Sonic was becoming something he really wasn't to get the kids of the current time to like him.

So the whole time period between S2 and Generations is definitely not what Sonic is all about? Riiiiiiight.

Because even Unleashed with pixar humans, even Colors with Wisps feel like Sonic games. Sure, they had things I didn't like but all in all they were still Sonic games. They looked like Sonic games, played like Sonic games and felt like Sonic games.

This one does not.

This is what Sonic is all about and what it should look like in modern day and age.

This is how it should NOT look like. That's not really Sonic anymore.

And this is something else that is absolutely not Sonic.

Also overly simplistic and stylized.

Lost World looks more like a Mario game than like a Sonic game and I see not a single reason for them to degrade Green Hill from the beautiful level in Generations to.......this.

Sonic has definitely lost his world

I will pray for this to be true. Maybe playable Tails or Knuckles or Amy will make the game at least a bit better in my eyes.

Shack News

What da fuq fans are they even talking about, because it clearly isn't the Sonic fandom given how diverse it is.

Because Generations' Green Hill is too busy?  Too frantic?  At times there's too much happening and when you're blasting through these levels at high speeds you miss most of those finer details anyway.  Yes there's a lot of detail but one there's also a lot of compromises such as texture quality and more importantly frame rate.  Unleashed and Generations to me lose quite a bit of their visual appeal due to them being capped at 30 FPS and not even being able to retain it consistently.  I would imagine that probably won't be the case here, though admittedly I could be wrong.

Because Generations' Green Hill is too busy?

Because the style is more from a Mario game. Because there is barely anything in the level.

Even empty Gens 3DS Green Hill had more stuff that that.

texture quality

Are you kidding me? generations textures are miiiiiiles better than Lost World. And Frame Rate is not a problem also if you have a decent PC. And keep in mind that both Unleashed and Generations were much faster games.

No I'm not kidding in the slightest.  The texture resolution of Generations' textures have clearly been reduced to compromise for the fact that there's so much going on.  The textures in Lost World are crisper and cleaner.  And the PC argument is completely irrelevant.  Of course Generations runs at 60 FPS on a good PC, as it should.  But comparing the console experience it barely holds 30.

Am I allowed to say I'm really disappointed on how the Badniks look? Or is that too much an impopular opinion? Because I'd really like to reiterate it after seeing how the fish badniks look.

Seriously you are allowed to be disappointed in anything you want. If its your honest opinion and thats how you feel about then its cool.

People will say its not or some will agree and thats why we have the forums smile.png

I'm living all the "this doesn't look like a sonic game" comments.

Haven't you thought that this isn't actually on SONIC'S WORLD. It's an alien planet, it looks perfectly fine to me as being Sonic-y I honestly don't see the problem. Not to mention we have only seen like a minute and a half or footage that is probably one act? There might be some other ground based acts or areas that we haven't seen yet. But I still think the game looks gorgeous!

I'm kind of disappointed in the visuals. It looks fantastic in terms of pure visual quality, but I think it's too "pastel colours" where other Sonic games are more subtle aside from Heroes and the Casino levels overall. I think this is what is making a few people say it's Mario-esque. Being too busy I can kind of see at Unleashed level speeds, but I find this style a bit flat and lacks the sense of place. I feel like this is a videogame level and that's kind of it, but Sonic levels to me always felt like actual places, even back in the Mega Drive days. The art style we have here could be done really awesomely though, if they gave back that sense of place, so I'm not saying it's terrible or even outright bad, just kind of not as good as it could be.

I understand that a lot of people will disagree with me, however.

My major disappointment, however, is Green Hill again. I was hoping for a new era we'd have a new and exciting first stage like what Emerald Coast and City Escape did for the Adventure games or what Windmill Isle and Tropical Resort did for Unleashed and Colours. I'm expecting the rest of the game to be more inventive, however.

Other than that this game seems pretty awesome so far, the IGN article really sold it and it's a shame I'm too broke to get a Wii-U or even a 3DS soon when I can't justify the purchase yet when I should save the money for other, more important things.

Omg will critics continue doing this in 20 years time? It's soooo annoying! And WTF is Shack's problem with Sonic's friends? What they don't even like the classic ones like Tails and Knux? ><

On Wii U, the GamePad is specifically used to activate various Whisp-based “Color Powers,” which feature touch-based controls and are mostly used to gain access to side paths and areas. The GamePad will also play a role in ‘Support Mode,’ which allows one player to use Wii U’s tablet to assist a second player who is controlling Sonic with a Wii remote and Nunchuck.

I think I'm the only one looking forward to this. ._.

Looking like Mario Galaxy and 3D Land isn't exactly a bad thing either when those two are probably the best 3D platformers ever made.

(yay opinions)

Also I agree that the art direction is lacking, not digging it in the slightest. It seems like a huge step down from Unleashed/Colours/Generations/ASR:T to me. Then again, I'm a terrible artist but I didn't think any of the stages in Generations or ASR:T were too busy. I just think that Sonic Lost World looks like a portable game, with the aesthetic more closely resembling Mario than anything. I liked the Pixar-style they had going on since Unleashed, not digging the whole 'plastic' thing that's going on. Hell, they're doing it now with Zelda (Wind Waker HD) too... X_x

You know, although I prefer the photorealistic-yet-cartoony style of Unleashed, Colours and Generations..........I don't hate this at ALL because 1. I think it looks pretty cool on it own 2. It's okay to have a change of pace in terms of artstyle once in a while and 3. the Lost World has an excuse for looking much different because it's not Sonic's world, it's the Lost World, and therefore can be expected to look much different.

They will probably go back to the old artstyle once they make the next main game and have it take place on Sonic's world. I see no reason to worry.

My god, are you people blind? Nobody notices the freaking checkerboard patterns plastered everywhere? How can you say this doesn't look like a Sonic game with all the checkerboards?

I guess another problem I have is the guardian's designs.

It's not that they're too simplified or anything, just they look more like they belong in Rayman than Sonic; then again, I don't know how they fit into the universe quite yet.

I'm also not too keen on how restrictive the level design seems to be, I'd feel like I'm walking on a ledge. From what I can see, it's only about 7-8 Sonic's wide a lot of the time. It's giving me a feeling of vertigo.

Lets see if they have anything at E3 and maybe less 'forever bottomless pit on left and right' kind of platforming.

Since it seems the levels to be in the sky i don't see how it can be something different. Of course judging that from only Wind Hill.

They later stages might be on the ground

The IGN interview, along with Desert Ruins.

IGN's preview, which is in the OP of this topic, mentions it:

Aesthetic ideas are now more free, ranging from the more idyllic, grassy settings of Wind Hill to something like Desert Ruins 1, which consists of cakes, cookies, donuts and all manners of candy. And just to throw a curveball, Desert Ruins 2 drops the sweets theme entirely, and features an entirely different gameplay style, opting for the ‘tunnel racing’ concept that Sonic games have used for decades. Of course, all of this works within Sonic’s typical level designs, which feature a wide range of branching paths and exploration options.

I also concur with the theory that not all stages will be "highways in the sky". If they are it won't bother me too much, but it'd be nice to see some variety.
