The car keys fairy thing doesn't surprise me too much. I wish I could recall the story but I do remember a folk tale, or just a saying at least in general about how fairies steal your shoes and keys and stuffs, as an excuse to why you lose little things all the time. I bet it's somewhat based on that and not just totally random like it appears to be.
