Concept Art Fridays

It's interesting that Scarabesque's ball is reminiscent of a standard football, only the hexagons are separated by pentagons instead of the other way around. Although it's likely a mere design feature, perhaps it means you bounce it back?

Like the concept art! Dung beetle badnik probably means desert level. The Caterkiller is a bit of a rehash, but no more then the Classics were guilty of. Liking this!

As long as it's a fun desert level, I'm okay. I don't think Sonic has ever really had particularly good desert levels. Sandopolis is well known for being a bitch, Shamar is a bit annoying and a lot of people don't like it from what I've seen, Dusty Desert is terrible, Yellow Desert in Sonic Blast is okay but only because the game is overall terrible, and Mirage Road in Rush had a lot of stop/start stuff where you had to kill enemies to proceed :/

I can only think of Pyramid Cave as an exception, sadly (some nice gimmicks there). Death Chamber can go fuck itself.

I suppose Arid Sands day isn't necessarily horrible, but I'd definitely say it's the weakest of the day stages.

Oh yeah, scarab beetle, and stuff. Definitely getting a Mirage Road boss vibe from it.

The new badniks look awesome! Detailed yet cartoony, threatening yet cute. I want to hug that dung beetle with it's big loveable eyes~

Also on a late note, that boss looks really cool. I'm just loving the originality and overall feel of the art so far. Even when they're similar to something else, they're so different in design. I really do like these concept arts.

Frontier Canyon is cool. American desert ftw,

I'd like Sandopolis in S3&K and yeah, even though it can be a bit hard at times I still thought it's a good desert level. Pyramid Cave is alright but I don't think it's the only good desert level in the series.

Agreed on both fronts.

To comment on the video, I like how the flame sheild sounds like it's burning Shadow's flesh.

And his skating animation is silly.

But yeah, I'm really hoping for a Western Desert level in Episode 2. Extra points if it has a giant tumbleweed to roll on.

Okay I haven't played the Rivals games, this looks pretty cool. Tbh I'm hoping for something more like that or Desert Dazzle that didn't make it into the CD port. Perhaps it's the whole Arabian and pyramid thing that I'm not keen on because it's rather overdone in this series.

Or maybe it's just in the main titles.

What I like about these new Badniks is that they all have different eyes.

Especially Scarabesque with his oval ones. These Badniks look like they have personality and character, unlike, well...

I'd like it, but I'm not really counting on a Western Desert level. I can't really picture the scarab badnik in a Western-themed zone.

Well, Badniks aren't always found in the most fitting of environments. Crabs in casinos; puffer fish in mountainious ruins; sea urchins in cites; caterpillars deep underground; starfish, mantises and crabs in a factory, turtles in the sky, yet more crabs in cities... the list goes on. Granted not all of them are random, there's always a high number of perfectly logical (within the confides of the series :P) too. Scarabesue being in a western desert would wouldn't be too odd at all. I am sort of seeing another Egyptian desert too though...

Except that Scarabesque isn't a completely random selection, it's clearly a desert-type badnik, but in a Western-themed desert it would be in the wrong desert. To me, it would just seem out of place in a way that other completely "random" badniks don't.

If we get a Western level I want hogs, cattle, cowboy-style badniks—not scarabs.

For the record, I actually completely agree with what you're saying. An Egyptian/otherwise middle-Eastern desert seems much more likely now with Scarabesque and Sandworm, but you know. There's always a chance.

I wouldn't mind another Egyptian desert zone as long as it looks different enough to Sandopolis.

My only criterion for a desert level is for it not to feel like Sandopolis, which could be more or less achieved by leaving out the ruins and replacing it with mountains and caves. But they could always do different ruins - statues sticking up out of the sand, pyramids, things like that, rather than ziplines and ghosts.

You know, Scarabesque's ball may hint at some improved rolling physics. Although the ball could also be scripted (most likely).

I'm personally tired of Egyptian Deserts stages, even through the two Badniks do kinda speak it, or an Arabian Desert.

Man, c'mon Sega, bring me a Western Desert would ya? If you can make Free Riders Rocky Ridge and Rivals 2's Frontier Canyon, you can do a proper Western stage for once.
