Ba Sing Se literally had a collection of Airbenders spontaneously appear, so unless Aang had one hell of a night years back and these Airbenders can be traced back to him, whatever caused Toph's granddaughter to become an Airbender too was outside Aang's biological influence.

She's Lin's half-sister. In the hypothetical scenario where Toph's second daughter is Aang's (Which we all know won't be true), Lin would still not be related to Tenzin, since she'd have a different father

You know, I think it was kind of given they were going to get more into the adult lives of the Gaang through what personal experiences their kids would have with them. Kind of like how we saw Tenzin's relationship with his siblings last season and how Aang's favoritism affected each of them. So half of me shouldn't be too surprised to see

 

what kind of mother Toph was to her kids and how it made Lin's relationship with her half-sister strained because both competed for their mom's attention.
