Doctor Who

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the current plan seems to be to announce the Twelfth Doctor just before filming on the Christmas special begins:

http://tennantnews.blogspot.co.uk/2013/06/the-new-doctor-to-be-announced-by-autumn.html

As much as I'd prefer them to keep quiet and let it be a complete surprise come Christmas Day, they'll never be able to hide it completely when they're on location. But then again, the internet somehow held back on massive spoilers for The Name of The Doctor... though I doubt it would be able to hold back on a megaton like the identity of the new Doctor.

If they didn't tell everyone, I wouldn't be looking forward to it. I want to be able to know who the actor is so that I can see some of their other works and get an opinion on whether to be excited or sceptical.

I honestly wouldn't mind them keeping the new Doctor a secret, as whoever it may happen to be, it's a new Doctor, I'll be excited nonetheless. And, I could still form an opinion on them with watching their other works after I see the regeneration, as they really only get 30 seconds, maybe a minute to make a small impression, and you don't see any more of them for 3 months at the least, so that gives plenty of time to see what else they've been in, and how well they did there. But their other works doesn't really bother me really, as one of the things I love about this show is how the Doctor is totally unique, and an actor can play him totally different from the last person, or any other character the new guy has played before, as playing the Doctor, I think, would be a totally unique acting experience, and you won't experience a similar character elsewhere after or before.

I would really like to be surprised by the new Doctor, but I know it isn't gonna happen. Oh well.

Are those rumours about Moffat leaving after the next season true? I kinda hope they are. Getting a bit tired of timey-wimey as plot and Davies' era being ignored and "Doctor WHOOOOO" being tossed around like a catchphrase.

I dunno, Davies' era gets the occasional reference. Not as often as the Classic Who nods, mind you, but yeah. Unless you mean characters from that era not appearing, in which case you're absolutely right and it bugs me too. >:U

edit: I also agree about wanting Moffat to go, but I think I made that clear a few pages or so back, lol

edit 2: electric boogaloo:

I actually sorta agree with this, it being a surprise would be really cool and if they pulled it off in this day and age it would be amazing, but you have a good point.

Although, I'm actually not sure about the backgrounds of most Doctor Who actors. I think Eccleston was already a known actor?? And Tennant was in plays and such????? I have no idea whatsoever about Matt Smith tho', let alone the Classic Docs.

For Doctor Who it tends to vary, but it was usually fairly well known character actors (Hartnell, Troughton, Pertwee, McGann, Colin Baker, Ecclestone) with a few young up-and-comers (Davison, Tennant) or people fairly new to the game who had an edge (Tom Baker, Smith). I never looked at it before, but it's interesting.

Maybe the paper's aren't as far off as people give them credit for. Apart from the fact they're going for more famous people.

Ben Whishaw Puts Rumors To Rest For Him Being 12:
He says to the Daily Mail:

“It’s not going to be me. But I don’t mind – I don’t think you can be Q and Doctor Who. It would be a bit wrong.”

Meanwhile, David Harewood talks about the possibility of taking the role, and says he'd like to make the Doctor a "Badass":

“It’s only rumors but it’s amazing to be attached to such an iconic role. It would be extraordinary if the BBC were to make me the first black Doctor Who, it would be extraordinary. But I’m almost scared to make any comment whatsoever. It would definitely be something extremely sharp. Something extremely sharp and tailored. And not to kind of put too dark a pun on it, but I would make him darker. I would like to make this guy a bit of a badass if I was to do it.”

Steven Moffat on Matt Smith's Departure (From Doctor Who Magazine):

“These have been the maddest few years of my writing career – so many ridiculous adventures, so many things I thought I’d never do – and I could not have shared them a with a kinder, more considerate, more entirely supportive friend than the man I completely refuse to call Smithers."

“We’ve been to so many insane press launches, we’ve looned about New York, we’ve dropped in on a specialist Doctor Who bar to watch the show with some (fairly surprised) fans, travelled the country in a special Doctor Who bus (well he did, I just dropped in occasionally!) and shown the new Director General of the BBC how to fly the TARDIS. And we’ve spent a fair amount of time looking at each other, and wondering how the hell any of this happened, and how we ended up here."

“Out there in the future, Matt’s finale is to be written and made and a new Doctor is to be summoned. Soon I’ll be lying on my sofa, in an agony of indecision again. Beyond that, some day I’m sure I’ll work with Matt again, and we’ll laugh about old times. But I don’t want to think about that right now. I want to think about the best of days. About the impossibility of replacing Russell T Davies and David Tennant in the two most brilliant jobs in television and the fact we didn’t entirely screw it up. About all those episodes, all those monsters, and those stories we’re never going to tell you."

“I will never forget a moment of it – me and my mate Matt, making Doctor Who.”

Chris Chibnall wants to return for Series 8:

He tells The Mirror:

“If we can get the schedules to work I will write for series eight, but obviously Broadchurch is my priority and that’s no small commitment. If their schedule and our schedule can work together then I’ll nip in and do one. Steven (Moffat) has asked and that’s very nice but it will just depend on the detail of schedules.”

He also says he'd love to work with Matt Smith again:

“I’d love to work with Matt again, he’s absolutely brilliant. I’d absolutely work with him at the drop of a fez. Matt is a brilliant actor and he can effortlessly become an even bigger star than he is already. The thing is he’s transformative and brilliant I think it’s great he’s off doing this movie role as a little break.”

Also, this is pretty awesome. It's a Fan Made (Just to be sure everyone knows.) trailer for the 50th Anniversary! Of course, it uses a bit of reused material, and some the creator captured during the Trafalgar Square filming, but it uses some neat CGI trickery, to put Matt and David in scenes together. (And you can view it in 3D!)

Reece Shearsmith talks about playing Patrick Troughton in An Adventure in Space and Time:

He told Digital Spy:

“I was honoured to be part of it. I think [Mark Gatiss] just always had this idea that I would [play Troughton]. It’s very small – I’m literally only in a very small little bit, but it was lovely to be part of it. Mark was in his absolute element, wandering around the TARDIS… the attention to detail was immaculate. He’s done a really good rendering of that time and that story. I think it’s a real treat.”

He also talked about what he thought about being the Twelfth Doctor:

“Oh God, no! I’ve literally not even thought about it. I’ve had a few people tweeting me that, saying, ‘You should be the Doctor’… I’m like, ‘What??’ It could be literally anyone. I can’t imagine who we’re gonna get. But it would be good to go older, I think, because they’ve done two younger ones.”

Okay, remember this fan-made trailer for the 50th Anniversary I posted?

Well, you want to watch how he did it, it's amazing what he's done.

Andrew Scott, actor behind Moriarty from BBC One's Sherlock talks briefly about his chances at being the Twelfth Doctor: (1:35)

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=U8k2-YN2czY#at=132

And funnily enough, Matt's Doctor and Andrew's Moriarty will be facing each other as part of a stage production tonight:

From The Radio Times:

"The Audience, a one-off sequel to hit West End show The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, will form part of an event at London’s Apollo Theatre tonight (Monday 1 July) to raise money for two autism charities.

The tale sees the Time Lord enlisting Boone’s help in an attempt to foil a plot by Moriarty (the villain viewers loved to hate in BBC1′s Sherlock) to disseminate a computer virus which would destroy people’s ability to understand metaphors (a common effect of autism) and thereby their capacity to create art and culture.

As he embarks on his mission for the Doctor, Boone asks permission from Her Majesty the Queen to seek help from secret service computer expert Q."

I've been wondering...

Why is it called the "Medusa Cascade"?

I mean I understand it sounds cool and everything, but why did the Time Lords name it after a character of Earth mythology?

I've wondered this myself. When looking online, there seems to be no reason, just a name. But there probably is a reason, maybe not within the fiction of the show but maybe a producer's tale...

In all seriousness, maybe ... remastered episodes? Does that sound like something they'd do? I really have no clue.

Steven Sez (About Series 8, 12th Doctor and 50th Special):

On when they will finally announce the 12th Doctor:

“Unless we have an insane plan, we’ll announce a new Doctor within days of finalizing the new Doctor. I think we’ll go public pretty fast.”

On the search for the 12th Doctor:

“Well, it’s always just terrifying… When you’re suddenly faced with the reality that you are going to sit there and you are going to make that decision it does feel absolutely chilling. There’s a very big range of people who could play it and different ways you could go with it. We must get this right. One false move and the show’s over.”

On the gender of the next Doctor:

“I’m not going to comment at all on the direction we’re going. Sorry!”

On when we will first see the 12th Doctor in the Christmas special:

“It’ll be the traditional regeneration. You know, the eleventh will fall and the twelfth shall rise. And you’ll see that in the closing moments of the show.”

On whether Matt is going to need to wear a wig:

“We’re sprinkling fertilizer on his head as we speak… The Doctor will turn up in his trademark quiff. We can’t have Matt’s last stand in the TARDIS without his proper look. “

On whether Series 8 will be broadcast late summer 2014:

“I think that’s probably right. But these things change so often.”

On finding out Matt was leaving:

“Well, I’ve known broadly speaking for a very long while because I knew how long, when he first came in, he was broadly speaking intending to do. And obviously, being the man I am, I always tried to persuade him to do longer and to do more and he [stayed] a little bit longer than he intended to. I knew that he would do what most of them do and do his three years.”

On when Matt actually told Moffat he was leaving:

“We discussed ages ago that we would do three series and then he would do the 50th and then he’d do Christmas. That was Plan A for a very, very long while. That may sound cold that it was so far in advance but you’ve got to plan a career. [Laughs] The question was, “Will I be able to talk him out of it?” We went out for lunch and he said that he’d come very close to doing another series but it was the same argument: “If I do another series, I think I might do two more series, or three more series. I think I might never leave.” It’s that thing of wanting to leave while you’re a huge hit and not let it tail off.”

On the length of the 50th anniversary special:

“I think you could call it movie-length, yeah. I mean, I’m saying that with a slight hint of vagueness because I don’t know the finished running time. [Laughs] It’s certainly well over an hour.”

On what was it like having Matt and David together:

“They really loved each other and had a huge laugh together. And of course they’ve been through this experience that only the two of them can talk about, really, in the modern world. They are the two people that have played that part at a time when the series is this big. They spent the entire time just sitting together talking animatedly.”

On how Tennant & Smith’s Doctors react to each other:

“They’re quite a fun pairing, I would say. There’s a bit of the normal joshing of each other but they’re both such enthusiastic Doctors. While they might be sort of competing slightly, they’re both standing there saying, “Oh god, it’s so cool, there’s two of me!” So, it’s very different. I think the other one that worked brilliantly was Jon Pertwee and Patrick Troughton. They were incredibly funny together. This is very different from that but it’s a sublime double act.”

On John Hurt’s Doctor:

“You get a whole new Doctor played by a proper screen legend.”

On Moffat’s future:

“I’ve signed up for this next year, with the new Doctor. It’s one of those jobs when you know when you’ve had enough. At the moment I haven’t had enough and I’m thoroughly enjoying it. I’m very excited for the challenge of the new Doctor and establishing that new Doctor. So, no plans to leave as yet. “

Doctor Who gets an awesome fan made maze!:

50th-york-dalek-maze.jpg

"A Doctor Who fan has celebrated his love of the TV time-lord by carving the biggest image of a Dalek ever created into a maze.

Farmer Tom Pearcy’s tribute to the BBC show is over 300m, or 1,000ft, long and cut out of an 18-acre field of more than one million maize plants. The design makes up York Maze, the largest maze in Europe and one of the largest in the world.

Along with the enormous Dalek the bold design also includes an image of the first Doctor, William Hartnell, and the most recent, Matt Smith."

And as you can see, Colin Baker has been investigating...

colin-baker-50th-maze.jpg

Colin Baker said: “It is fantastic to see how much interest there is in the 50th anniversary of the show. I have been invited to join events all over the world this year, but what York Maze have created with their giant maize maze has to be one of the most imaginative ways to mark the 50th anniversary I have seen.

“Who would have thought almost thirty years after I played the Doctor that the show would continue to go from strength to strength reaching a new generation of fans? It is great that children and their families will be able to have their ownDoctor Who-inspired adventures in the York Maze this summer.”
