Turns out the 'ghost girl' who gave Super Sonic rings initially was more than likely just Amy. The 'tree robot' may have also just been a very early iteration of Giganto.

Apparently one of Sonic's idle lines is
"Huh. Wonder if there's a chao garden around here? Nah, probably not the right climate."

Open Zones are "empty" for story reasons.

You can't go Super in the open world. Shame.

About Sonic himself in the ending; "He might have some PTSD from some character/s not making it tho..." what

In that cutscene you just posted, Eggman and Sage arrive on the scene together after the other heroes, and after Sonic starts glitching out.

Makes me think they're not directly responsible. Villain truce plot, maybe? Eggman and Sage have to work with the other heroes to save Sonic, in order to safely escape Cyberspace themselves perhaps?

What does the plot have to do with whether Sonic can be fun or not? That's up to the gameplay, the story is just the icing on the cake in my view.

Perhaps it's just about finding balance -  we have zig-zagged from the dire "save the world" to more lighthearted "goofy hijinks" and back again a lot in the last 20 years of titles.

Maybe she doesn't die? Like, Eggman's and Sage's parting could be due to her having to stay behind in Cyberspace maybe?

Either way, I'm emotional. The thought of Eggman having a genuine fatherly relationship to one of his creations is very intriguing. I can't wait to learn more.

Gamma's story is tragic but kind of understated, you kinda have to dig a bit to get the full impact, and ultimately it's only a small part of the game.

They're going to beat us over the head with Sage's arc, in a game that's looking to be emotionally draining basically the whole way through.

Sonic has been all over the spectrum in terms of tone; some people are gonna prefer dramatic stories while others want more lighthearted, whimsical stories. And execution plays a role here too.

but we've been getting lighthearted stories for almost an entire decade barring Forces (which sucks), so a change of pace was bound to happen. So no sense in getting hung up over what people like or don't like.
