So anyway, There is a Trilogy of Movie-ca's based on Madoka Coming up

......well, catch is, the First Two are Recaps and only the Third one is a All New Story. God knows what said all new Story but the Writer and Director are on-board.

Oh man, I don't know if I can go through that series again. I mean, I liked it, but damn... Kind of interested in seeing the new feature, though. Speaking of recap anime movies, I still need to see the Nanoha movie.

Also, would anyone recommend "THE WORLD GOD ONLY KNOWS"? It looks cute and promising, just wondering if it's worth getting into.

Madoka movies announced weeks after the price of the english release is announced being at $75 a set for the special editions which are actually better than the Japanese sets, which leaves me to wonder what I should do with the two imports I bought back in June.

But honestly do I look like someone who would be interested in more Madoka...

As for The World God Only Knows, I think it's a fun show, I do enjoy the manga more as it has gotten way ahead of the anime, which hasn't even made it to the Goddess arc.

With that avatar, yes ahahah.

Madoka was a blast IMO, so I'm eager to see the movies. Who knows what kind of animated insanity to expect if SHAFT are given a film budget, lol

Ha, of course, I am a Madoka fan after all, can't wait for my sets to arrive next year. :)

I hope they delve deeper into Homura's past, I heard Urobuchi wanted to do so much more with that episode but couldn't because of time restrictions.

Madoka left me clinically depressed for a few days, I mean jesus, its like NGE without most of the Mind Screw, and with little girls.

I thought Madoka was decent. It didn't feel like the genre-bending masterpiece many fans would lead you to believe, but it wasn't terrible by any means.

I'll watch the movies if only for some more twisted SHAFT animation. And Kyubey. I love that little bastard.

Looking forward to Mardock Scramble: The Second Combustion, I found the first movie quite nice, if it weren't for the cliffhanger ending, but bah I read the book and know what happens anyway, the second one should be entertaining as well. If you haven't seen the first one you should give it a try, definitely not a childish adventure anime by any means. There is also a manga, which is well... different but I still find it entertaining.

Disappearance has finally shown up in the mail, shame the Blu-Ray version was delayed to February - still got it on pre-order though.

However at the moment I'm actually watching Birdy the Mighty: Decode. Finished the first series and it's a very solid plot, but I couldn't help but feel that the whole thing was on permanent fast-forward the whole way through. The show's best described as anti-filler; it always gets straight to the point and doesn't stop to fill in character nuances; this actually reminds me of most Western shows. It's properly wrapped up in 13 episodes flat.

Supposedly the second series is better than the first, so I'm looking forward to seeing how this develops.

Watched the first episode of No.6 an hour ago at the Uni. Was smitten with the warm and tender feelings between Shion and Safu. Trust me to take a liking to the het pairing when it turns out, after some research at home, to be a shonen-ai. :<

Wait do I detect Future Diary hate....

What is wrong with you people?

Nah just messing opinions... totally see why some people wouldn't like it...but there nothing wrong with a batshit insane romp sometimes. Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan seems to easily get away with this whenever its talked about...just sayin.

Although I will admit that the Anime so far is doing a much better job than the manga. Also for people wondering about why The male lead would fall in love with Yuno...

You would be surprised what the mind does in moments of extreme messure and pressure. A lot of people can sit here and criticize things on another persons action during situations, but I bet most people have lived a pretty calm...not to crazy life style that would delve them to think like that. Yes...Yuno is batshit crazy, but at the same time she always wanted what was best for him...and in a time where survival is such an extreme and dangerous task to do on a daily basis (like war)...when trust is such a hindrance that it could be you disappearing for ever by making 1 mistake...all kinds of feelings can happen.

If I had to trust some psycho bitch to stay alive...while she went around slaughtering everyone in my path. I would in a heart beat... at least I know she on my side.

You trully know who you are as a person when you are put in corners like that. To be honest I think Yukki reacted preety realistically compared to your usual shonen characters. Like what Madoka (show) did for the Magic Girl genre.

So I'm looking to find an anime a little more mature- something that actually has a planned point and plot but still has action and emotion. Code Geass is probably my favorite and I really enjoyed Deathnote. I'm currently watching Bleach Naruto and but neither of those are really top quality anime to be honest... super long/full of fillers/aren't exactly examples of deep thought provoking emotional stories. I'm also watching Nurarihyon no Mago(enjoying it a lot but again... not exactly what I'm looking for) and I'm still seeing where Guilty Crown is headed.

Anyway, any recommendations guys?

"Mature" with action?... hm. A few come to mind.

Check out Mobile Suit Gundam (the series or compilation movies) if you don't mind 70's animation and occasional bouts of super robot-ish qualities. The Gundam metaseries is huuuuge, so after finishing that, you have quite a large number of options.

If you liked Death Note, you'll adore Monster. It's a psychological thriller and is pretty goddamn awesome.

Now and Then, Here and There is one of the few anime that actually made me tear up a little. It takes the old "normal earth kid gets transported to another world" cliche and turns it on its head. This strange new world is hellish and ravaged by war, with few good men out there and children are turned into brutal soldiers. Not for the faint of heart, but this has been a personal favorite of mine for a while. The less said about it, the better, go into it with a fresh mind.

Hey hey hey, I finished EoE guys!

.........I need to go lie down now.

Ahhh I remember my first time watching End of Evangelion.

I felt like I just watched a puppy dog die.

I know I'm very late to this party, but I watched the anime adaptation of "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time" a couple days ago. Great film. Definitely ranks amongst my favorite animated films from Japan.

Also, has anyone here seen Tokyo Godfathers? They used to play it on an art channel on satellite TV sometimes. Never really hear anyone else mention it, though, which is a shame because its a hilarious and touching story that gets better every time I see it. Great film to play around Christmas time.

First off, if you're looking for more complex and involving content, it will be helpful to understand the distinction the Japanese make between boys', girls', mens' and womens' manga/anime; shonen, shojo, seinen and josei respectively. Josei is almost never made into anime simply because Japanese marketers believe that women generally aren't interested in watching animation, however there's a lot of seinen anime.

Take a look for yourself; you'll probably be surprised by what shows up in this category and even more surprised by what doesn't.

As the shonen and shojo categories are aimed for age ranges anywhere between 3 to 18, there's a huge variation in their content as well. Don't rule out shonen and shojo shows, but keep an eye out for the stuff aimed at older teens for the best results. Of course as the Japanese have totally different standards for acceptable broadcast content, that might be difficult to judge offhand, so starting with seinen is my recommendation.

I'll edit this post with particular standouts after I've refreshed my memory, but funnily enough I just got finished watching both series of Birdy the Mighty: Decode, which is definitely a seinen series and not listed in the above link.

And for the record, whilst the first series is very good, the second is much better, even with its budget problems; they got clever hiding that little problem. You'll see. :D

Ooh, I saw that one last year. Lovely film, I must say!

Hidan no Aria made the list... how, not to mention its one of the worst shows I've ever seen.

Some shows I like are Ergo Proxy, Samurai Champloo, Evangelion, Mardock Scramble and I recently found myself enjoying Last Exile, but not sure if Last Exile is Seinen or Shounen, but I still found it to be a good show. Mardock Scramble has some pretty disturbing scenes (Bandersnatch Company being near the top of the list) but having read the novel I have high hopes for the final two movies. But yeah, just throwing stuff out there.

That list is an example list of seinen, not a list of good shows to watch.

As well as Birdy which isn't on the list for some reason, on that list four shows stand out to me, all ones I've either watched or am watching.

Ah! My Goddess

Chobits

Cowboy Bebop

Tiger and Bunny

Tiger and Bunny is a very recent series that finished airing only this September, and it was simulcast on streaming sites, so that would be why most people are unfamiliar with it right now. However, it's pretty damn awesome.

Take the X-Men, remove the focus on persecution and replace it with a critique of corporate sponsorship and commercialising special abilities and you have Tiger & Bunny. It's also notable for deliberately trying to mimic the Western comic book style, so it's not your standard anime by any means. Watch it.

I can see that :P

I should get Birdy the Mighty... I've been wanting to check it out but I didn't want to pay for 2 sets, so now the complete set is coming out (why not do that from the start instead of raping wallets?)
