  • Epic Sonic Karting Fangame 'Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers' Launches For Free

Available on Windows AND Mac computers!

A fan-made sequel to the awesome (and also fan-made) Sonic Robo Blast 2 Kart has officially launched today, under the name 'Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers'. You can download the game right now for Windows and Mac devices on the official Kart Krew developer website.

Pitched as an official sequel to SRB2 Kart - which itself was a go-karting modification of the classic fan-game Sonic Robo Blast 2 - Dr. Robotnik's Ring Racers has been in development for over five years and includes a HUGE range of new features that greatly expands the experience over its predecessor. Such features include (from the website):

    • A ludicrously long list of courses and playable characters
    • A complete Grand Prix mode with CPU opponents and multiple difficulty levels
    • New and revamped items
    • Unique game systems and mechanics
    • Local split-screen multiplayer up to 4 players, and online play up to 16
    • A comprehensive Time Attack mode with replay support
    • A wealth of secrets to find

You can watch an announcement trailer above to get a sense of the vibe - we really dig the retro 90s aesthetic!

In a statement on its website, the Kart Krew development team wrote:

    Quote

Dr. Robotnik’s Ring Racers has been a tireless effort by the Kart Krew Dev team, and additionally comprises the work of many more independent contributors across the SRB2Kart, Sonic Robo Blast 2, Doom Legacy and broader Doom communities. We want to issue a heartfelt thanks to everyone who has made this project possible, spanning back over 30 years to Doom’s December 1993 release.

Thousands of hours of work—from the core development team, our dedicated tester team, the SRB2 development team, community contributors, independent musicians, and our volunteer moderators across the various community hubs—have culminated in this artifact of passion and dedication.

The meticulously crafted pixel and 3D art, catchy music and sounds, elaborate level design, and tightly tuned gameplay all come together into a complete product we are immensely proud to present to you, entirely for free.

I personally can't wait to play it (once I get Knuckles Week out of the way!). Let us know if you've downloaded it and played it yet, and what you think of the herculean effort of the development team, in the comments section below.

Just now got through the tutorial and first GP of this game, excited to get into online (after I get some sleep, lol).
I loved SRB2kart on paper, but never really got the vibe. I totally get it now - WOW - this has completely captivated me. I can't wait to dig my teeth in this more. Anyone else getting in on it?

I also got a real iteachvader vibe with Tails and Robotnik being close in this one. I love it. Silly thing to pull from but it's warming my heart.

They don't provide Linux flatpaks yet but I don't even like flatpaks to begin with so I compiled it from source. It seems to run just fine so I know exactly what I'm doing later.

Having played for a bit I can give my thoughts.

Firstly, if you're building from source, remember to use -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release or the game's performance will be unplayably bad, especially if using the software renderer.

After the extremely long tutorial, I quickly got back into the swing of things. The Smash Bros.-style trophy board, Sonic Riders-esque starting line system and item mechanics give it a unique feel.

The ability to play against bots also makes the game much better for me because it means I don't have to go online and deal with all the issues that would entail. I can finally come in first for once!

Unfortunately, the game displays Sega Saturn button inputs instead of keyboard maps because of course it does. The tutorial is also way too long.

Outside of that, I don't have much to say.

Haha well, I've never made a grid that I've shared, but I'm a graphic designer! Nothing fancy, just as a hobby. Happy to provide the assets or make something else if you'd like, shoot me a dm anytime.

Custom-Made Grids? Well, I need to look at my library, cause I already put a lot of Grids in already
