ITT: opinions vs opinions

I'm still excited as hell for this game and I think it looks great. And I don't care about anyone's negative opinion here. End of (my) story.

When does the game release again ?

Well...that Emerald Coast was...boring. Well, is better than...Sonic 4?

They're bad in different ways.

Hey where'd my post go? xD

But posting seriously here, it doesn't look that bad. I mean from the looks of it the classic stages (talking about the ones that are actually original layouts) look pretty decent. Obviously the console version is immensely better but this still looks like a solid title.

Is this that much of a surprise to anyone though?

Back when people were coming out of Gamefest, Gamescom and all the other shows we all said that this version of Generations should be praised for giving us an accurate classic level with a new lick of paint, but overal it still wasn't a very good game, it had a lot of problems back in the August-September demos that people got to play, let alone the design of the levels, the technical side of it alone was quite a mess (demo I played, loops in mushroom hill would randomly vanish).

And as we all said, the 3D effect is close to pointless right?

Now lets play devils advocate here. How many really really really good games are there on the 3DS right now? Not many is the answer. So we've got 2 reviews which are giving it decent scores even though we're all leaning towards the side of it being a 'not very good game.'

So I'm wondering, are we coming to that conclusion because we're judging it both as a 'game' and as a 'Sonic game'? And are the jernos coming to their conclusion because they're trying to review it as a 3DS game? Because as a 3DS game, would you consider it to be a pretty good one? Especially considering what else is on that system right now?

Something else I want to throw out there... but not sure how to word it.

Would you consider gens 3DS... to be akin to what Sonic 1 on the Game Gear/Master System was... to the Genesis 16bit version... Or is is a lot worse?

IMO it doesn't quite deserve that title. The Master System version of Sonic 1 was obviously lower on a graphical level but the level design was top notch. Gen 3DS on the other hand misses the mark a little. It looks more fun than Rush or Sonic 4 Episode 1 though.

Considering modern day standards and the fact that the 3DS shouldn't be a limiting factor in the way the game plays (unlike the Master System which couldn't do a lot of what made S1 on the MD great), it's worse.

I find the issues with this (and Colors, to a lesser extent) is the lack of any reasonable development time. I said it before, but can you expect Dimps to make a good title when they have to build levels off Sonic Team's gimmicks? Imagine if Sonic Advance had to be....Sonic Adventure Advance. I doubt it would have turned out as well.

It's a larger gaming issue. Portable versions of HD games rarely turn out well, they're usually cheap knockoffs. ColorsDS and Generations 3DS get critical approval because they play reasonably well and resemble the critically acclaimed Rush titles on a superficial basis. The games are playable at the very least, and that stands out in an industry full of terrible handheld ports.

Looking at the game, it's flaws are ...shallow, linear gameplay. There's a market for that in portable gaming. The Rush titles were designed as handhelds, and I think they turned out a lot better than this. And as a fan, it doesn't cause me to compare the game. I took it as it is.

It's still better than Rivals, at least.

I should hopefully be getting my hands on this Saturday if things go according to plan. I'll also be able to 'rip' the audio straight away using the headphone method. To me, it looks like an enjoyable Sonic game. I hope it is, otherwise I brought my 3DS for nothing lol

I think I found a Sonic 2 game gear reference in the game's plot.

Tails has been kidnapped! Go save him!

Meh, so far all 3 modern stages we've seen so far look like the same boring straight lines to me. This should be their song

Can we see some gameplay of a post-classic era classic level like Radical Highway? I'm getting the impression that the best levels in the game will be classic green hill, casino night, and mushroom hill because of their design, despite being exact rips right down to the pointless checkpoint at the end of mushroom hill.

Also, sounds like the story will be even more barebones than the console version too?

So the fact we already have 3 bland levels doesn't bug you at all? Up your standards dude.We all know Dimps can do better than this, why should we be satisfied with something inferior?

The only stage that looks "bad" is Emerald Coast. Green Hill and Mushroom both looks pretty good. I'm saying wait because the levels after Emerald Coast could be much better. One dud isn't going to ruin the entire game.

--------------------

My opinions so far

Green Hill Zone - Classic is great, Modern looks pretty good. Has plenty of multiple routes for a starter stage.

Casino Night - Classic is great, haven't seen Modern.

Mushroom Hill Zone - Classic is great, loving Modern with all the gimmicks and multiple routes that are in the foreground/background.

Emerald Coast - Classic is probably going to be good, Modern IS boost to win but it makes perfect sense here. This isn't like the HD version where you platform and take your time with the levels. These are supposed to be fast and quick and you're supposed to find all the differents routes in the level to get to the goal in the fastest time.

Special Stages - Look fun so far

Bosses - Dimps is great at making these. Big Arm looks amazing, Biolizard/Egg Emperor can't be bad.

Level Variety - Much better then HD version, loving how they just didn't go with the city trope for most of the levels. I also can't wait to see the Sonic Rush stage. The music is going to be gorgeous for all of these zones.

Replay - 100 missions with offline/online competetive modes/time attack. That surely will keep me coming back over and over to race other people. The game is also portable so it should be easy to pick up and play and do a quickie.

A song that's intense, exciting and generally awesome for these stages? Your analogy backfired a bit.

Funny how it's called "highway in the sky"...

I know he meant to reference Blue Blood's Highway in the Sky infographic, but the way he presented the analogy just didn't seem right.

Some people have different opinions than others and have different, personal beliefs on what they think is "good" and "bad". Some people like the game. Some people don't.

Eh, I personally don't find the song that exciting so that's why I did it.

The deciding factor of my hype for this game really depends on how the Biolizard boss is. If it seems to easy...I...I...will be very sad...

Another thing I must add, that Windy and Ripply remix was seriously underwhelming, so....I guess it goes with the stage

So someone scanned in that article which states every stage in the 3DS version. Just have to ask though.

generatiosn3d.png

What's the context for those character models to the right? Is it just saying that these characters appeared in the game which the special stage format was taken from? What is the point, article writer? :/

the context only discribes the special stages. team chaotix seem to be there only for show. like the picture where shadow is in radical highway, and knuckles is included in the shot of heroes special stage

Here you go, crappy Emerald Coast Footage!

I know, it looks horrible, but I thought its better than nothing. Hope you guys enjoy it anyway.

Level design looks pretty much as I expected Dimps to design it-lazy as hell.

All I saw were just straight lines with an occasional slant upward/downward layered on top of each other and littered with the usual springs, rings and a few wall jump sections and loop-de-loops. Not to mention I saw only ONE badnik/Eggman robot throughout the entire level. Majority of the level design overall fits the “hold-right-to-win” and “boost-to-win” terms to a T.

Yet this will be the version that will end up being the superior version in terms of critical scores.

@Dead Skin: Ill take some pics, but probably tomorrow.

The only Characters in the game are Sonic, Tails, Eggman (all of them Classic and Modern) and the rivals.

I just thought of something. In Colors DS they had an alternative storyline, which featured the interaction of more charactersd and such.

Do you guys think that since they wanted the same thing for the 3DS version (except vice-versa, this only focuses on Classic and Modern Sonic and Tails), they cut out a bunch of stuff from the HD version and tried to squeeze some of it in the 3DS version?

If this was the case that would be a really half-assed move on Sonic Team's part, trying to give the handheld version a relevant (alternative) story by stripping some of it away from the HD version just to try putting on par.

And now, I have a feeling that reviewers will perfer the 3DS version's storyline to the HD storyline simply because it doesn't have the rest of "Sonic's shiity friends," and just the two Sonics and Tailss (yea I know it looks kinda wierd, adding a s to a name that ends with s) and the bosses and rivals. Which would contribute to the game's score and have it score higher yet again.
