Here is my opinion of the 3DS version:

I think it's getting rushed and when I heard it was getting delayed, I was happy, but then I heard it wasn't and all that happiness was wiped out. The level list is okay in my opinion and they all have variety to them (besides the fact that most are first levels) as for bosses, I am a bit disappointed. I really wish they would use the correct timelines for bosses because it's causing confusion and fan raves. All the rival bosses are being treated the same, they're all like Metal Sonic but with more difficulty each time. Some of the bosses don't make sense at all. Metal Sonic really doesn't belong in Casino Night, I'm okay with Shadow in Radical Highway, and Silver in Tropical Resort is okay... if you followed the DS storyline I guess... the main bosses are Big Arm, Biolizard, and Egg Emperor. This is where nothing makes sense. Big Arm is actually a pretty awesome boss for the game and was well used, yes. Biolizard was fought by Shadow and I have no idea why DIMPS is trying to push Sonic into Shadow's shoes. But the worst of all is Egg Emperor. While, I would have preferred that as the Dreamcast boss more than Perfect Chaos and more than Biolizard, it is not the Dreamcast boss, it's the Modern boss. That makes no sense and I really see no point to him being there at that point, especially because that cancels every chance of something from Sonic 06 to be included (And we all wanted Kingdom Valley, let's face it.) As far as stages go, I'm cool with most of them, except Radical Highway, but that has the same treatment as Biolizard. While I wanted the handheld stages in there more than the console stages, I'm okay with it (and hey, we actually did get 3 Handheld stages, and one of them was exclusive.) The level design seems pretty lazy, but the level choice and diversity is good. Gameplay is pretty strange this time around especially because Modern Sonic plays like how he does in Rush. This means there actually isn't much difference to playing as them, while Modern is boost heavy and has occasional 3D sections, he really is not that different from Classic Sonic at all. Overall, the 3DS version seems REALLY rushed, and there could have been a WHOLE lot more effort into it. I really think it was a foolish move for SEGA to let DIMPS do the job. The game would have been much better if they did it themselves, especially because DIMPS has been disappointing us after Sonic Advance 3. I'm not really trying to bag on the 3DS version but... they are being pretty lazy with it. Considering I'm not planning on buying the game, this is all I'm going to say (believe it or not, I have a lot more in mind for the game, but I don't feel the need to talk about it.)

funny that i have seen nowhere that DIMPS chose the levels, or bosses for that matter

Eh, we never had Super Sonic on mobile (save Sonic 4) outside the final boss, it's not like I would've expected it.

But still, 20th Anniversary and all... it almost, almost, feels like I've been flipped the bird.

In any case, the

Egg Emperor hacks and slashes with sword beams, charges when you're too far away, go to circular battlefield, attack and repeat, like the original fight?

Oh, really? SEGA chose the levels and bosses?

Of course. SEGA say, Dimps make. That's how it works. I'm not sure how much of the Advance/ Rush games Dimps designed for themselves, but chances are that was all down to Sonic Team as well. You can't rap on them for the level selection, but you can blame them entirely for bad level design and sloppy engines.

Oh yes, of course. But it doesn't necessarily matter on who is responsible for this, I just gave my opinion on what they should have done.

I think its quite cool that Sonic fights

the Biolizard

... besides, normal Sonic fights Perfect Chaos (originally fought by Super Sonic) and Egg Dragoon (fought by Werehog Sonic) in the console version.

I will admit that I'm disappointed the rivals do not have their own stages and all play identical. In the console version they all feel like real bosses.

And yeah, I highly doubt DIMPS chose the levels and bosses. DIMPS just helped (if not entirely) create the gameplay.

In regards to handheld games, this game is essentially Sonic Rush 4. Its a direct sequel to Colors (on DS) which also has almost identical gameplay to the Rush games.

The only complaint in level/boss choices I have is the Egg Emperor. I agree, it doesn't really fit as the modern era boss, although honestly I can't think of a better boss to choose from in the modern era except from '06, maybe, but I can understand why they didn't choose anything from '06; that game did not appear on a Nintendo console, and all the levels are from Nintendo. (Ironically, this does not fit with the console version having references to Sonic Colors, but that one's the more important one, anyway, and Colors is still considered a main game based on how this one takes place almost directly after Colors.)

Oh yeah... the modern era is made up entirely of handheld stages, in case you haven't noticed. Tropical Resort is based more on the DS version than the Wii version, so... they did keep their promise of including handheld consoles. Its just that, instead of choosing something like Sonic Rush Adventure or the Sonic Advance games, they chose Sonic Colors DS.

Yes indeed, but the Biolizard was fought with Shadow thus making it not in Sonic's past, that's why I'm okay with Perfect Chaos and Egg Dragoon. The level/boss choices were mostly fantastic but I would have wanted Metal Harbor instead of Radical Highway, Egg Emperor as the Dreamcast boss instead of Biolizard, I wanted to at least fight Silver in Kingdom Valley since it was confirmed to not be a level, and for a Modern boss I would have wanted Egg Nega Wisp or Nega Mother Wisp.

If that were the case, Water Palace and Emerald Coast would seem redundant.

Green Hill makes Emerald Coast redundant.

It was pointed out earlier in the thread that there's a pattern to the bosses: Classic Eggman mecha, Monster of the Week, Modern Eggman mecha. Under this logic, the boss choices make a lot of sense; Big Arm is a great final boss without being as spotlight-stealing as the S&K Death Egg Robot, and adds otherwise absent Sonic 3 representation; with Chaos taken by the console version Biolizard is a more practical monster boss to program than Dark Gaia; and Egg Emperor... I guess they thought it best represented the modern-style series of final Eggman bosses. In addition, I get the impression that the boss fights all play very faithfully to their originals, so programmability may have been a consideration in using bosses like Biolizard over Dark Gaia.

I don't really understand why they picked Egg Emperor of the choices available, though - given that the "Modern" era is otherwise a Handheld era, I'd have thought that the F-Zone final boss from Rush, or the Egg Wizard from Rush Adventure, would've epitomised the Eggman mecha a lot more relevantly, even if they thought Egg Nega Wisp was too Wisp-themed and not Egg-themed. Egg Emperor just seems like a horrid mistake - but you can say the same for the whole level line-up. All good levels, to be sure, but all of them tend to make each other redundant in some way. I'm very surprised that nobody at Sega or Dimps ever looked at all the levels side-by-side and realised that there was very little variety there. Maybe Sega thought Dimps would have time to add in the sort of variation and level references that helped the HD version, but if so, obviously they were wrong - and that could be Sega's fault or Dimps's, take your pick, although they've clearly done a good enough job on the graphics...

I'm not going to engage in the kind of wish-fulfilment level lists others are making, because everyone's covered what I want to say. The question is why the fans are able to come up with a better level and boss list than the official game has, without even making unreasonable demands or deviating from the standard of recognisability.

Leave the modding to the mods, thanks.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the Final Boss ended up being better than the HD version?

It'd sure be awesome, because in my opinion the final boss on the console is really... repetitive and a dull excuse for a boss... while the game was fantastic, the final boss was not.

I like the Super Sonics only in the Final Boss, that was my minus point of Colours Wii.

....wait, what?

Yeah, I'm with Sonictrainer on that, I think that is a pretty over-reacted reason to take a point off of colors... (well actually it depends how much you rate it out of.)

I just had a thought after taking another look at modern Emerald Coast. Do any of your remember the first time we got a pic of Emerald Coast where modern sonic was out running the whale.the timer on the clock said 0.25 second. fast foward to now and that same scene is now at the end of the level. I think that Emerald Coast was went through alot of changes so thats why it might seem a bland.

Hm. Yes, that makes sense. Honestly I can't think of a more memorable Sonic Adventure level for the 3DS so I'm fine with it.
