AVGN Adventures looks like trash. What's the point of doing a retro-style game when the art style doesn't know if it wants to be 8- or 16-bit? Combine that with special effects that weren't possible on either old system. So retro.

It's possible that it's just a reference to the many games he has played. Both 8-bit and 16-bit. A lot of the gimmicks I saw in the video were directly ripped from the games he's reviewed. A nice nod actually.

Ya don't need to dedicate to either 8-bit or 16-bit to want a pixelly game, maybe what they wanted to do a bunch of things.

I'm not an AVGN fan myself but I'm not understanding the criticism, I don't think it's intentionally trying to be either or, it's just using the technology we have today to make as many throwbacks to different things as possible. It seems.

It reads like a year's head-start on the opposition has been squandered, but I honestly don't know what they could have done differently (if they were even aware of alternate strategies in the boardroom meetings it must have been brought up in). Seems like a badly timed spell of ill fortune, to me.

They could've used this generation to prepare instead of living in the Wii bubble. Had 7 fucking years and the advantage of tech, developer and development methods maturing over that time.

No excuses.

Yay rumours!

http://gonintendo.com/?mode=viewstory&id=201573

- GTA V was being tested on Wii U dev kits for some time

- Rainbow Six: Patriots was up-and-running on Wii U

Ok so.. weird choice of wording? "was being tested"? "was up-and-running"? Considering the prolific natures of those developers, testing a game on a system isn't exactly anything too shocking or groundbreaking, but whether those games actually come out on WiiU is a completely different matter.

The AVGN game looks like generic platformer fare. The art style is a mess, too.

Shovel Knight has been classified as "8-bit plus", and the idea is that they're doing 8-bit without the limitations.

It also has original gameplay.

If the rumor is on the money, or roughly in the area of accurate, then it means that Rockstar and other devs are more than likely testing the waters on the Wii U; figuring out how easy it is to port games to, how to incorporate the Gamepad; maybe ballparking (maybe prototyping quick builds of) a few unique features/gimmicks it could bring to the game (hopefully beyond "menu," "map" and "inventory"). If these developers are doing this stuff, it's probably a good sign. Hopefully they like it and will want to lend some support.

Update on the Wii U hack news I mentioned earlier.

UPDATE: Nintendo has said that it is aware of the Wiikey group's attempts to hack Wii U security but believes the console's systems that block pirated games currently remain secure.

"Nintendo is aware that a hacking group claims to have compromised Wii U security," a spokesperson told Eurogamer. "However, we have no reports of illegal Wii U games nor unauthorized applications playable on the system while in Wii U mode.

"Nintendo continuously monitors all threats to its products' security and will use technology and will take the necessary legal steps to prevent the facilitation of piracy."

The AVGN game doesn't look too bad but the blood is really distracting since it sprays toward the screen. I'm more interested in Shovel Knight anyway.

Apparently Wii owners are getting messages to "discover the Wii U."

http://kotaku.com/wii-owners-nintendo-really-wants-you-to-buy-a-wii-u-o-486178764

I wonder if any Wii owners even check their messages anymore.

It's kinda funny how Nintendo is like "it's not just an upgrade, it's a whole new console, honest..!"

Well, unless they've turned off the signaling, that light on the Wii can get pretty bright.  I used to be waked up at 3 in the morning by the reflected light flashing from my Wii - which wasn't only in a different room, the room in question was down the hall.  Now, whether folks will remember what the blinking light is for is another question.

When you need to spell things out so clearly, and directly message every single owner of your previous console, well. You appear to have a marketing problem. And a sales problem.

Although this really is a bit exaggerated. A certain number of Wii owners already have a Wii U, so they didn't really 'message every single owner'.  I own the previous console, and the current one as well.  (Didn't get the message anyway, as the Wii is boxed until I decide to play DDR again.)

TBH marketing the Wii U through the Wii makes a fair bit of sense. I can't blame 'em, and honestly they should have tried it sooner. Tho the fact they're still having to say "SEROUSLY GUYS, IT'S A NEW DAMN SYSTEM" shows they really goofed up when they got started.

I love how Nintendo pretty much just said 'this console is old and crap... go buy a new one.'

Don't see the big deal. Of course they're going to plug it any way they can, including their old consoles. Ten bucks says Sony and Microsoft will be plugging their new consoles on their old boxes too, and I don't see how it's saying the Wii is crap.

But of course anyone who comes off of Kotaku's sensationalist bullshit will have been thinking the same.

Must have been a US only thing. I checked my Wii earlier and I didn't have that message.

Remember when HMV discounted the Wii-U and we all put it down to HMV being in administration?

Asda are now selling the Wii-U Basic and premium at very discounted rates.

Basic = £149

Premium = £200

So... whats Asda's reason for the price drop?

Clearing stock, obviously.

Wii U is doing absolutely fucking terrible in the UK.

Really? I thought it was selling more since HMV did that sale on the premium edition. Pretty sure I read that a few pages back. o_O

If I had the money, I'd probably bite now. There are even folks over at HotUKDeals saying they're still not getting it because there are barely any games. Regardless, it's become one of the top deals on the front page there now, so that should give it some free advertising.

Oh, seems we'll still get a shit ton of casual games.....thanks Nintendo, you promised that this would be a more "core" console and now it seems you're going back on that.

You what, mate? When Nintendo says they make games for children and families, they mean games like Mario, Pikmin, etc. They're not a company that pumps out war shooters and gore fests. They're just reaffirming that they're basically the Disney of the industry.

Edit: Or wait, do you mean the bottom most articles? Your quotes are confusing me here, dude.

According to the articles, it had less to do with the price drop and more to do with the two big Wii U exclusive of Lego City and Monster Hunter HD.

I didn't know the Wii U is going to miss out on all of these EA Sports titles. That's a pretty big blow.

Madden NFL 25 will skip Wii U - report
Sports series will have no Nintendo presence in 2013

By Shaun Prescott for CVG Australia

Madden NFL 25 will not release for Wii U, EA Sports has confirmed.

In a statement provided to Nintendo World Report, a spokesperson for EA Sports confirmed that the title - which has been confirmed for PS3 and Xbox 360 - will not reach the Wii U.
"We will not be releasing a Wii U version of Madden NFL in 2013. However, we have a strong partnership with Nintendo and will continue to evaluate opportunities for delivering additional Madden NFL products for Nintendo fans in the future."

Wii U has also been skipped for other EA Sports titles including Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14 and NHL 14.

FIFA 14 has not been confirmed for Wii U either, though the title is expected to be confirmed for other platforms, including PlayStation 4 and the next Xbox.

EA strikes again, I have no idea why their beef with Nintendo is such a big deal.
