Hm, did I say before that I thought this was worse than DmC? I should rephrase that to be a little less vague.

I will never hate another video game as much as I hate this one.

Oh my... not even Big Rigs?

Does anyone earnestly hate games like E.T., Big Rigs, or Superman 64? I mean sure, they're objectively badly designed, but do they really instill deep loathing, personal offense, and utter repulsion in subject matter and overall game design? They're novelties, but their flaws don't really extend anywhere beyond a mere spectacle that people like to bring up, kinda like the polar opposite of people constantly referring to Citizen Kane as the greatest movie of all time despite never having seen the fucking thing. I don't really consider those games to be an adequate answer when citing a game you personally despise, and I think it's a real cop-out if one were to say any of those, including other similarly notorious games.

So yes, I can safely say that without a doubt, there is no other video game that I hate as much and everything it stands for. Fuck this netorare moeblob shit.

Still buying because the game itself looks fun and we don't know the full story with this attempted rape scene yet anyway.

Damn, the internet really got apeshit over this huh?

http://kotaku.com/5918193/tomb-raider-creators-are-no-longer-referring-to-games-attempted-rape-scene-as-an-attempted-rape-scene

Addressing the widespread reactions to the article posted on this site yesterday, Crystal Dynamics studio head Darrell Gallagher released a statement today saying that there is no rape attempt against Tomb Raider hero Lara Croft the scene shown in their "Crossroads" trailer.

"One of the character defining moments for Lara in the game, which has incorrectly been referred to as an 'attempted rape' scene is the content we showed at this year's E3 and which over a million people have now seen in our recent trailer entitled 'Crossroads'," Gallagher wrote. "This is where Lara is forced to kill another human for the first time. In this particular selection, while there is a threatening undertone in the sequence and surrounding drama, it never goes any further than the scenes that we have already shown publicly.

"Sexual assault of any kind is categorically not a theme that we cover in this game."

It looks like the scene is headed towards rape before she manages to kill him. Regardless, it doesn't change my stance on the game.

I've never played a Tomb Raider game outside a demo several years ago, but at first this game intrigued me. Lara Croft just seemed like a ridiculously-proportioned badass action hero in the past, so I was interested to see how one would go about giving a more relatable spin on the character.

But my god, did they go overboard.

From the info we've seen, Lara:

-Grunts, moans, and shrieks constantly.

-Tumbles down hills and mountains.

-Plummets onto various hard surfaces.

-Falls and gets stabbed in the stomach area.

-Parachutes into a forest and hits a crapload of branches.

-Trips over a fucking stick.

-And now, apparently almost getting raped, before killing the guy and crying.

Okay, there's showing a character's roots, and then there's just turning them into the complete opposite of what they stand for. Like I said, I'm no Tomb Raider fan, but from what I gather this is pretty much nothing like the famous Lara Croft. It doesn't even seem like there's a fraction of the same character in this interpretation of Lara. Granted, it's a reboot, but I think they are taking it a bit far. If it delivers in the end and ends up being a fun game with good character development, then cool. But for now, I'm skeptical.

And with all the times Lara gets hurt in this game, I can't help but think someone on the dev team gets some sick enjoyment out of it. She gets banged up and bloodied to a ridiculous degree, and it all seems honestly kind of unpleasant and unnecessary.

And they should tone down the grunting. Seriously, I've barely watched five minutes of footage and already her voice annoys the shit out of me.

Because no female will ever play this game. Ever.

You'll be surprised at the high amount of Tomb Raider fans who are female.

Look some people are taking this way too far and I think it will be changed over the year and maybe removed given this backlash. The game looks to be fun and maybe the best TR game (imo) since Anniversary in terms of gameplay (Underworld just fucked stuff up in the gp section) and I look forward to a most excellent TR game even if it has attempted rape sections which will end up as quick timed events where you get yourself out of the situation most likely and nothing comes off it.

It might not even end up in the final build for all we know.

Jesus fucking Christ. I know I was calling it torture porn but, it's turning out even worse than I thought it actually was. Who thought this was a good idea? Honestly.

That was the point of his post. They're acting like women don't play the game by saying no one puts themselves in the role of Lara, and making a game like this is, quite frankly, insulting to any female fans of the series. I suppose you could compare it to Samus' sudden random PTSD against Ridley several sequels in but, exponentially worse.

Yep, I am still buying the game regardless of this overblown (and it is) controversy and like you said if it becomes to make issue they will probably remove it but I honestly haven't seen in its context to put any proper judgement on it yet, so I am not going to yet.

I have played the series for a long time and I am not going stop now and that's all I am going to say on this matter.

...

I kinda wish I could take back everything I said when we had that debate about the game being misogynistic before. I did NOT think they would actually go this far with that.

And here I thought calling it "Torture porn" was being too extreme.

EDIT: Okay, wait. I seem to have overlooked some posts. So we're not getting an attempted rape scene? They still seem to be skirting edges here.

Why are we still going on about this "attempted rape" scene? Wasn't it just confirmed by the devs that that's not the case?

Yeah, that's kind of why I said I overlooked some posts that said otherwise and made an edit.

But if they're confirming that that's not the case, then how the hell was that taken out of context for Eurogamer to make that statement in the first place? Or was that actually taken out of context or are the developers making damage control?

The article says it directly contradicts what was said last week. Just saying, dude. Without the rape scene, I'd still say it's an insult of a game.

because I, like many other people, don't really buy their explanation.....considering they described it as an attempted rape in the past

It seems like a pretty sad cover up if you ask me

You can't backpedal when riding on a bike with a coaster brake. That is to say, you don't say this:

"And then what happens is her best friend gets kidnapped, she gets taken prisoner by scavengers on the island. They try to rape her, and-"

And then after controversy erupts, go "Aw, shucks guys. We didn't really mean she get's raped. Just puts in an extremely vulnerable position (similar to rape) she has to fight her way out of."

Either they are extremely fucking stupid and gave her a rape subplot to try to drive her into a being tough killer (which, if true, cannot possibly be overblown when people react to it), or they are extremely fucking stupid and didn't give her a rape subplot to drive her into being a tough killer and just said they did because what they did do was close enough and they knew it would get publicity and fit in with theme of the rest of their talking up of the game.

Blatant backpedaling and ass-covering... meh. My opinion of the game so far still hasn't changed.

Yeah...Maybe we need to go back to that "Dear Internet" topic over how people need to be aware of these portrayals of female characters?

Well, whether it's a cover up or not, and whether there is rape in it or not, I'm still getting the game. I understand and respect people's feelings here, but even if there is rape in the game, attempted or not, I doubt they would throw it in just to cause controversy.

They didn't throw it in to cause controversy, they threw it in because, it's the easiest, very emotional, way the media portrays a woman enduring hardship. It's like "Hey, rape will make people feel bad for Lara, and it will give her the motivation to become a badass because, rape is like serious business and stuff!". In other words, like Solkia said, they're fucking idiots. Lazy fucking idiots.

Which goes back to what Pelly/Arrafay's (seriously, change your goddamn name back :P) comparison with Lara in this game compared to others like Batman, Spider-man, and Luke Skywalker. A man could suffer when he has his parental figures or someone close to him killed when he steps up to be a badass, but the woman's equivalent would be having her suffer a near rape attempt before she becomes a stronger woman in overcoming it.

Granted, not every female character suffers that to be a badass, but these guys thought that going that extra mile would do more for her character and didn't consider that they would be stirring a hornet's nest in doing so. Making a origin story that's dark and edgy is one thing, but things like rape are still a massive game changer and source of controversy for anyone trying to attempt it. So it's not surprising that this caused a controversy in the first place.

  • 2 weeks later...

British actress Camilla Luddington has been revealed as the voice and motion-captured body of Lara Croft for the new Tomb Raider game.
