You have nowhere to go...

Question #17: What was your favourite mission in Shadow the Hedgehog... that DIDN'T involve simply getting to the end of the level?

51tYLxNBBuL._SY300_.jpg

"Not this time, motherfuckers."

Another oddball question, yes.

Shadow the Hedgehog is a game that works by meeting up with and siding with characters in order to achieve whatever it is they want you to achieve (or alternatively, you don't, if you want to go Neutral). Shadow the Hedgehog is also a game that is every bit as notorious as Sonic the Hedgehog 2006 in regards to the "it was a bit of a kerfuffle for the franchise's reputation" department. Ergo, most of these missions are generally considered to be tedious, pointless, or just not fun. Sometimes all three. Perhaps it's because half of them involve the same method of defeating many enemies and then inevitably missing one that you then have to find by backtracking three times before giving up and drinking a Bacardi Breezer. Unless you're me, in which case you continue to do the damn mission like a sad bastard. And you have Fanta instead. Rebellious, innit.

But there's always a diamond in the rough somewhere. There has to be at least one mission that you didn't mind too much. Most people would consider those diamonds to be any of the missions that consisted of getting you from Point A to Point B, which is why I fiendishly excluded them from this question. What is your favourite (or at least most tolerable) mission aside from those ones?

Note: If you can't answer this question due to never playing Shadow the Hedgehog, you're free to talk about another Sonic game that involved "missions" in some way, like Team Chaotix's story in Sonic Heroes. If that is the case for you however, remember that you still can't choose a typical "get to the end" mission.

Crusher's Thoughts: I admit to having a little bit of fun with Lethal Highway's Hero mission. The alien ship that you're chasing down is amusingly small, and as a consequence of the way the mission works, it looks as though it actually wants to follow and drive on the road like a safe and well-adjusted warship of destruction. Secondly, while it's still typically... Shadow the Hedgehog-like, in that there'll still be plenty of "okay I'm doing goo-ARGH FUCK YOU GOT IN THE WAY YOU MEAN OLD MISTER BLACK ARM" moments, compared to many other missions, this one isn't so bad for me. Finally... it's a Hero mission. I don't really like doing Dark missions in this game (or any equivalent to such in any similar kind of game), because I actually enjoy being the good guy. Yes, I know this makes me a boring scaredy cat, I'm already way ahead of you.

So with that out of the way, you may now post awaaaaaayyyy!~

I haven't played Shadow The hedgehog, so i might as well choose what Crusher said: Lethal Highway's Hero mission.

P.S. Sorry if this answer is too short. That's (again), because i haven't played Shadow the Hedgehog.

Day 17: favourite (non-get-to-the-goal) Shadow mission?

Cosmic Fall's good mission. Why? Because, well... find the computer room, that's why! This is techincally a get-to-the-goal mission, so I suppose I'll go with the hero mission for Prison Island.

Despite the game being unenjoyable overall, I had good fun laughing at the bad voice acting, and "But, like... what's a top secret disk?" is right up there. Good chuckles on an otherwise groan-worthy level, all pits of green death goo considered.

Day #17: What was your favourite mission in Shadow the Hedgehog... that DIDN'T involve simply getting to the end of the level?

Shoot, I don't own Shadow the Hedgehog. :c

At least I have 16/30 days completed...

...Does this mean I have to watch Brainscratchcomms' playthrough of Shadow all over again to look for a decent mission just to get all 30 days? :C

(Day 17: Favorite not-goal ring Shadow mission)

Digital Circuit - Shadow pretty much breaks the entire goddamn internet (Dark Mission)

"Oh hey there's a chaos emerald yeah sure let's get it-naaaaaah eff that let's wreck this whole place!"

That was pretty much me the first time I played this stage. Digital Circuit is one of my favorite Shadow stages, both to play AND to look at. And getting to pretty much blow up the cyberspace was actually preeeeeeeeeeetty satisfying. The uphill climb kinda sucked though, but the reward at the top? Wooooooorth iiiiiiiiiiiiit!

Vector's mission was fun to get through, but that involves getting to the end. And you don't need to invoke that phrase at all to do it, contrary to popular belief.

Espio's mission was fun to get through, and that was adventuring through four data terminals, so it can count for the questions. It has genuinely clever use of the gun mechanic that you will have to use to your advantage to do Espio's mission. It was also nice wandering through the crazy cyber neon world through the weird data areas and zipping through the terminals at high speed. And the cutscene before it was good.

Tails' mission in Circus Park was pretty neat, and it was more in the spirit of team Rose's extra missions or even Sonic Adventure's Casinopolis. It has some fun attractions to explore like a real theme park or something, and the visuals again are fun and zany, a perfect reflection of its creator. That added to the experience of being a hoarder.

#17:

I'm gonna go with Lethal HIghway as well.  It's nothing that special initially but after you get the Shadow Rifle, you can take the Black Arm Ship in a few shots!  A-rank made easy!

Also, if you fail this mission, Sonic says "Damn! They got away! Don't worry, I'll chase 'em down."   Sonic actually swears!? (a minor one but it still caught me off guard.  I wasn't expecting any cussing from him)

While somewhat controversial, you have to admit that this was one of the highlights of the level.

You could just talk about a non-get to the end mission from another Sonic game that had missions... something that I noted in the post.

Unless you haven't played ANY Sonic games with missions, in which case... you might have to do just that.

Day 17:

Non get to the goal mission, I guess I'll with the sonic race, sure it was a pain, but still was fun to beat up on the guy you normaly play as, or something like that XD. Taking out Black Dooms fleet was fun too

Circus Park with Tails comes to mind. It's the "Get certain amount of Rings" mission isn't it?

This stage is...actually fairly good fun unlike the majority of the other stages. The level itself has lighthearted aspects which is a given considering it's one of Eggman's theme parks. I really like the part with the big circus tent and the rides on the zipline through all of those fireworks. I also like it's unique Badnik's and Eggman's comments on them in the Dark mission are pretty funny.

"Don't destroy that clown robot Shadow! You'll ruin his fun little act!"

Even though it can get frustrating if you get hit and lose all of your rings in this ring-collecting mission, it's pretty fun in general.

I was tempted to say Tails' mission in Circus Park, gathering 400 rings, simply because of how fun it was to play around the various circus attractions, such as jumping through the flaming hoops, using the shooting galleries or, my favourite, being launched into replicas of Eggman's nose.

But since that's a rather generic objective, I'll have to go with Knuckles' mission in Central City. Yes, it's difficult and frustrating to find and eliminate all the bombs, but I liked that. In a game filled with simplistic and easy quests, it's nice to get some actual challenge for once, even if it comes in the form of a timer. I have to admit it was pretty enjoyable to navigate around the city and find each bomb, all while fighting the numerous enemies present (and that annoying toxic waste).

Another reason is that, like almost everything in Shadow the Hedgehog, it brings its own share of unintentional humour through poorly planned mission design: you're only able to complete this mission using the Egg Vacuum weapon... that you only get for completing the game in a certain path. Come on guys.

One of the few that I can think of that I didn't mind was Tails's Circus Park mission. Not only was Circus Park a pretty fun level on it's own compared to the rest, but the little mini games there for gathering rings ranged from tolerable to fun. It also helps that it never felt like a scavenger hunt across levels poorly designed for backtracking and exploration like the others.

I was actually thinking more about the missions themselves as opposed to the levels they happen to take place in (not that your answer doesn't count or anything, since you specifically mentioned the Hero mission in said level, and some of the missions do admittedly tie in to the level design). If we were talking level-wise, you can guarantee that I would have talked about Circus Park instead. laugh.png

I suppose destroying part of the Egg Fleet in whatever level that was in (FUCK, they're so forgetably named) by virtue of it being the most memorable for me.

Honestly Shadow is a game I tend to forget about a lot.

also plz forgive me crusher its not my fault the game is so meh that i honestly don't immediately recall anything else that doesn't demean the doctor

17: Favourite Shadow mission

Tricky. I too am fond of Lethal Highway's tank mission but I'll think of something different. You know what? I'm going to say destroying the President's plane (I am NOT calling it an escape pod, its a bloody jet) in Air Fleet. I wanted to see a dark Shadow again after how well Adventure 2 did it. This was the closest I felt to it. Killing a World Leader who adored Shadow. Ignoring idiot responces (Doom: Shadow, go down the GUN soldier infested path, its safer for us) and how the story nulls it out, I felt like a true bad guy on that mission. Shadow Rifle is a must.

Okay, good. Because I own Sonic Colors DS, Rush Adventure, 2006, and Generations. And I should've read the post more thoroughly.

Anyway, I'd say that one Knuckles coin-digging mission in Generations. It's one of the few I remember after not playing Gens in so long, and it was just kinda...oddly satisfying to watch good ol' Knux dig for treasure. The Espio one was cool too, if not a bit frustrating.

But it is your fault for having a crap memory. And using "meh", because nothing is too petty for me.

Ten years in the Crush Cooler for you.

Favorite non-Goal Ring Shadow the Hedgehog mission:

The only mission I would've considered fun from that game was "Chasing Eggman's fleeing Blimp"...its a slightly harder Lethal Highway "hero" mission and a much easier "dark" mission involving the Presidents plane. I found it kind of fun shooting the thing as I was grinding down to the next section of the level and also as I was parachuting from a rocket(...?), chasing it down wasn't too annoying and the guns you get, are able to take it down good enough. So...yeah.

Honestly, I'd say the first one with either Sonic or Black Doom. Not because of the objective itself, kill the dudes on the other team, no, but because I think the atmosphere for the level is just right. Sure, I don't mind having to kill 35 or so enemies for a mission, not ideal, but I think because of the background quotes, the explosions, the dark time the city is going through just got summed up perfectly. That'd be my favourite then.

That or Lethal Highway, that level was just fun.

From what I recall,, I vote for shooting all the Artificial Chaos to help Maria in the flashback ARK level. Was a lot of fun deciding parts of the past.

Zone 17: Favorite Shadow Mission

...none of them.

No, I'm serious. I can't think of a single good mission in that game that wasn't getting to the end.

The game was so boring when I had to backtrack to find things. The only one that looks the least offensive is collecting 400 rings in Circus Park. But it's been so long ago that I don't even remember if I just tolerated it or hated it like I did the rest of the missions.

So there's my answer. Finding rings in a circus. It's been almost 10 years, I can't be bothered to dig up repressed memories.

Ugh.

Question #17: What was your favourite mission in Shadow the Hedgehog

Mad Matrix (Hero Mission)

Guess there's no point in beating around the bush if we're gonna talk specifically about this game. Mad Matrix was one of the cooler stage ideas in ths game and one of the only stages where going straight for the goal was actually less satisfying than doing one of the missions. There's just something cathartic about navigating the vast circuits to reach each tower, and the "complicated" color-coded security system was a fun idea that got old after the first time, but still a cute idea.

Day 17: Missions which don't involve going from A to B

I don't have Shadow, so I guess I'll have to choose a mission from another game.

Hmmm... I can't really remember any memorable missions from many Sonic games, so I'll just go with the one that still sticks with me.

PUTBB2.png

Vector's Pick Up The Beat challenge

Yes, it's sometimes frustrating to play with Generation's controls, but overall, I really liked this mission. It felt like a mix between a tower defence game and a tennis match, and was rather different compared to the other, more redundant missions. Overall, I found it to be a nice change of pace and a welcome mission in my Sonic game.

Day 17: My Favorite Non-Linear Mission in ShtH

Aside from the obvious... Computer-Room-design-8-1024x815.jpg

I was pretty fond of the two bomb missions in Central City.242px-340px-Shadow_central_city.png

This level kinda felt like a "hub world" that you could freely explore while rushing to detonate/diffuse bombs!

My favorite non-get-to-the-exit mission in Shadow the Hedgehog is...

Lethal Highway's Hero mission where you gun down a tank. Unlike some of the later missions you'd eventually run into *COUGHthedoomCOUGHCOUGH*, this one is quick, easy, and really fun to speedrun. Just taking the Shadow Rifle and running rampant on that thing is REALLY satisfying and any time that you can beat your own record is a real joy in the end. It's one of the only missions that perfectly combines the combat element with traditional Sonic speed for an enjoyable romp overall. Also, if you happen fail it, Sonic curses:

Yyyyyyyeah.
