Season 1 | Sonic Boom: TV Series Discussion

I think most of the hype for Boom is coming from the show at this point.

It almost makes me reflect and look back to when we first heard about Boom and when those silhouettes were revealed. If you managed to get over how weird-looking Knuckles was, you'd notice that it was going to be a CGI-animated comedy airing on CN.

Needless to say such a description didn't warrant much enthusiasm from many....

Oh wow, I love that bit where he impersonates the infamous Alton Towers sound clips! Man, I remember when those first got out on the internet and everybody went absolutely nuts. Ah, good times. *War flashbacks*

Fun Fact.

I was the guy who actually posted those clips online originally when I stayed in the room shortly after it opened. And the only reason I did it is because I thought it would be a good thing to have for archive purposes. I had no idea it was actually Roger or the next Sonic voice actor.

When you're in the room, it doesn't sound as bad as it does on the video.

However there is another ride clip which is out there somewhere on the internet, but it's hard to find. In which Sonic says

"Hey hey! Stay in your seats, a ride technician is on the way!"

And another where he comments on the weather ruining the ride.

Oh I am so looking forward to this show

This may sound crazy but I've just came from the future and you should absolutely look forward for this show. Just 4 more months.

Nooooooooooooo!

All that discussion of all the episodes! Gone!

Ah, I'm just thankful the boards are back. And that we can get back to discussing the TV Series again.

Can you update this topic's name Ming Ming with the next episode title?

No because I'm lazy. Don't judge me.

So I might as well put down my thoughts on last week's episode before we start getting to this week's (which sounds like it'll be a hoot BTW).

How To Succeed in Being Evil Without Really Trying. Already rivaling the second episode's title in terms of length here.

Honestly, not really another favorite here. I don't want to use to the term "rehash" here, but I did notice how similar this one was to Circus of Plunder and to an extent Translate This was as far as Tails-centric episodes go:

1. Tails shows off new invention to help out friends in some way.
2. Said invention backfires/doesn't work as well as hoped.
3. Tails gets scolded by friends sans Sonic for failed invention.
4. Tails separates himself from group for most of episode.
5. Circumstances causes Tails to either be saved by friends or for him to save friends.
6. Tails uses same invention during battle but with better results.
7. Everyone makes amends.
8. The End.

....Okay, that was probably too many steps, but you get the point. It's just already been done in this show and arguably done better in Translate This because that episode managed to subvert most of those clichés, especially the 'friends gets mad at Tails' part by not letting their dissatisfaction with UT affect their behavior towards Tails.

This one also had that odd or abrupt ending most episodes seem to end on. Seriously, what's the big deal with Dave here?

Though I'll admit the highlights for me were Sonic and Amy bickering like a married couple, Sonic making that jam pun with Knuckles high-fiving him despite not getting it and that Eggman logo transition complete with 60's Batman music got a laugh out of me.

Other than that, it's another average one for me.

I... can't even remember what I said about this episode before the posts were lost (and my account deleted ;_; )

...But I do know I am still adoring all the 2D artwork that keeps popping up in the show here and there.

I liked the episode concept, but it could have been played out better. I love the idea of a new villain squad, hope they reappear, reminds me a bit of S.O.N.I.C.X. from the comics. The ten second food fight was also hilarious. Dolts.

Episode 16 was okay for me. What I really liked was when Dave used the Mutant Seed Gun like a boss. I liked how Amy and Sonic were fighting. That was the highlight. And Eggman's name calling was good too!

Also, I'd like to point out that the sneek peek picture that Sega posted before that episode aired was actually from Sole Power, (but you knew that already).

Hopefully Don't Judge Me will be really nice!

I need more SonAmy goodness. You don't know how long I've been waiting for these interactions to happen, back when I was 13 years old. Before Sonic just wouldn't care, showed little-to-no interest or run away from Amy. Now if they were only in a relationship...(just not a kissy-kissy one) I would die happy.

I used to own a great SonAmy forum and some registered SonAmy haters there said to me Sonic will never have interest in her. I wish I can see their faces now.

Yet again though, I have to remind myself that this is Sonic Boom. The Amy in the main series is different to the Amy in Boom.

Due to the recent reset here at the SSMB, it seemed as if my takes on the previous 15 episodes of Sonic Boom were lost forever...or were they?!

Fortunately I had drafts saved of my takes on all the Sonic Boom episodes so far and I'll re-share some of them now via spoiler tags:

Episodes 1 & 2:

Now that I am back home from work I would love to give my input on the Sonic Boom cartoon if I may.
I was really excited to wake up this morning as this was the first time in 20 years that I woke up early to watch a Saturday morning cartoon, with the last one being SatAM back in 1994. Seriously, it had been 2 decades since I did such a thing!

If there is one thing I feel the Sonic Boom sub-series has done as a whole on a consistent and excellent basis, it is characterization and character interaction. The Sonic Boom cartoon definitely did not disappoint on both accounts as Sonic, Tails, Dr. Eggman, Knuckles, Amy, Sticks (I liked Sticks before but I really like her after seeing these episodes!), Orbot and Cubot were all portrayed well with some way more better than others, especially Dr. Eggman. I'm going to put my thoughts on the episodes in spoiler tags for consideration's sake:

In the launch episode "Sidekick", Sonic and Tails' bromance really stood out to me. This is something that I always enjoy seeing, and this episode was no exception. The shenanigans involved with Sonic finding a sidekick made this episode that much delightful, especially Dr. Eggman's. There were some really touching moments in this episode such as:

L1Rbktb.png?1
Sonic trying to convince Tails that being retired is a really good thing

Ze7Omg3.png?1
Then Sonic hugs Tails. Tails' look on his face is hilarious!

Zxiz5h7.png?1
Despite the massive risk involved, Tails goes and saves Sonic from drowning

qIrKtYR.png?1
Then the best friends watch a beautiful sunset together

And I am only scratching the surface with these examples as there was much more where that came from. All within an 11-minute time-frame, mind you.

If there is one wish I would like to see granted from all things Sonic from here on out, it would be to see this stellar bromance between Sonic and Tails continued to be demonstrated and demonstrated well. This is something across all forms of Sonic media that never fails to warm my heart and make me smile ;)

Amid all the wonderful moments the first two episodes provided, seeing this being realized was the best one of them all :)

Per what I said in my status update earlier, I had only intended to watch the first episode as I had to be at work at 8:00 AM but I just could not pull myself to turn the TV off and head out the door. And boy did I NOT regret it! :P

Everyone in the "Can an Evil Genius Crash on your Couch for a few Weeks" was great but Dr. Eggman really stole the show here. He was like a big kid that you can't help but to laugh at and love. While everyone said and/or did something in the episode to make me laugh, it was Dr. Eggman I was laughing through the ENTIRE episode, so much in fact that I was in tears from laughing so hard. Seriously EVERYTHING Dr. Eggman did in that episode I thoroughly enjoyed.  I loved the fact that he said Orbot and Cubot were family, which further proves to me that he cares for them like he demonstrated in Sonic Lost World.

cfq7cCu.png?1
You can't tell me that Tails washing dishes isn't simply adorable!

0KCqQkT.png?1
I so lost it here...PILLOW FIGHT! Eggman would be fun to be with at a slumber party! :P

I lost it even more when Dr. Eggman slapped Sonic! That was definitely the funniest moment for me!

Overall I am very pleased and excited with what I saw and as a result I went to work with the BIGGEST smile on my face as I was that delighted with what I saw (and I made it to work on time, by the way!). I can go on and on about what I enjoyed about both episodes but I know I have said more than enough at this point.

I had a blast watching it and one would of thought I was 10 years old as opposed to 30 with me smiling, laughing, cheering and whatnot throughout the episodes as much as I was. Sonic Boom really made me feel like a kid again and that is definitely one of the best feelings in the world :) I can't wait until when next Saturday rolls around!

Episodes 3 & 4:

After my cable going awry Saturday morning, having to work 17 hours on Sunday, and being sick all day today, I was finally able to check out Episodes 3 and 4 of Sonic Boom. I guess I'll go ahead and give my thoughts on these episodes now :)

Episode 3 "Translate This" was really good and had me laughing aplenty with all the antics involved. I'm going to put further thoughts and details in spoiler tags because of images and stuff:
U.T. inadvertently caused a riot between Sonic and the gang with him revealing everyone's thoughts and much hilarity ensued. But I was deeply impressed with Tails throughout the episode. I liked how he wasn't upset with his friends after they all pretty much dissed U.T. and was determined to "right the wrong" from that first impression (which backfired due to hilarious antics of Dr. Eggman) and I loved how Tails gave his friends the benefit of the doubt when U.T was "revealing" the insulting thoughts they were saying about one another and contributed it to a possible malfunction.

I also liked how Tails didn't scoff at his friends or appear angry towards them when he send them the message via U.T. I'd say that Tails had plenty to be angry with them for after them expressing disapproval of U.T. (which even shocked Tails) and no one even budging when Tails expressed his desire to get U.T back. Speaking of U.T, him being able to translate one's true thoughts proved to be very useful in line with Tails' video message. I also loved how he walked away from Dr. Eggman and the contract with a cute little chuckle back to Sonic and the gang. Just really good stuff from Tails overall in this episode :)

Only thing I didn't like was how Sticks chucked U.T. in the ocean at the end of the episode which was unfitting after everyone else had finally expressed approval for him and showed total lack of consideration for Tails and his hard work.

And a few observations from the episode that I noticed that I really liked:
guigP90.jpg?1
It was nice to see the gang hanging out at the beach enjoying themselves. Knuckles and Sticks playing volleyball was cute

gEEdUJ9.jpg?1
Who knows how worse this fighting would of gotten had Tails not found out the truth!

atlZStx.png?1
I did not expect to see a familiar face among the robots such a Motobug with a new twist!. Seeing that he is one of my favorite badniks, this brought a big smile on my face

9IgVuAm.png?1
Dr. Eggman was amusing and awesome per usual holding/hugging Tails here. That's a given at this point.

Episode 4 "Buster" is definitely my least favorite episode so far, as it could of been a lot better, although it wasn't bad at all. Just inferior in my opinion in comparison to the other episodes shown in Sonic Boom so far. I'll put my thoughts in spoiler tags here as well:

Knuckles actually told a good joke and he got no credit for it while Sonic made the same exact joke and everyone laughed at it. Poor Knuckles can't seem to catch a break anywhere in this series, sub-series or not! While I was glad to see an episode primarily focused on Sticks, I really don't like how she prioritized catering to Buster at the expense of her friends and even when Orbot, Cubot and the henchbots committed the robbery and Sonic and the gang needed Sticks' help only for her to walk Buster instead. I still like her though, so it's all good.

Not many laughs were had by me in this episode but here were a few:

WONMH7D.png?1
You know the Doctor is beyond awesome if he can bring laughs by simply sitting there reading a magazine!

q8arlsf.jpg?1
Everyone sans Sticks and Buster look so annoyed here! Well at least the gang is having lunch together

G7CYQaj.png?1
Orbot and Cubot trying to frame Sonic and Tails with the robbery here?! Hilarious!

DKp0349.png?1
Funniest moment of the episode to me was when Buster tripped Sonic up in melodramatic fashion. Interference at it's finest! :D

I really don't think that I laughed that much after that :(

You know what I thought would of been cool? If Tails had thrown Buster into the ocean as payback for Sticks throwing U.T. into the ocean in the previous episode.

At this point, "The Sidekick" is still my favorite Sonic Boom episode. Sonic and Tails' bromance is my favorite thing in the entire Sonic franchise, so unless a more impressive showing of this is shown in any future episodes, this one is going to be hard to beat in terms of my favorite. But close on it's heels is "Can an Evil Genius Crash on Your Couch For a Few Weeks " with Dr. Eggman's childish and hilarious antics (with him slapping Sonic still causing me to laugh to the point of tears), followed by "Translate This" for being really funny as well and "Buster" definitely being the weakest episode at this point. So yeah, for me it's Episodes 1>2>3>4 interestingly enough. Looking forward to seeing if the current order of my favorite episodes can be shaken up come next week!

Episodes 5 & 6:

Episode 5 "My Fair Sticksy" was pretty good. Not laugh-worthy like all the other episodes have been to me to various degrees but it got a few good chuckles out of me nevertheless. It was nice to see another episode focused on Sticks as I really like her. I liked how Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and Amy were all board to help Sticks become more lady-like as that is some great teamwork there! I also enjoyed seeing Sonic being a gentleman towards Sticks as her escort (I have to say it was weird seeing him without his scarf!) and it was cool seeing Knuckles befriending and brofisting the aristocrats. And although his stint was brief in this episode, Dr. Eggman showed up with antics and laughs to go with them, per usual.

Some observations that I noted and enjoyed from this episode are as follows:
8zPsEwx.jpg?1
I have to say that those reading glasses look good on Knuckles!
mFb9oxr.jpg?1
I love how Knuckles and Sonic are sharing a laugh here
n1lF8wB.jpg?1
Knuckles playing the piano and Tails playing the drums together
IQg1RTv.png?1
I love how Dr. Eggman barges in on the festivities and proceeds to disregard table manners and slurp down his soup!
gBrv3EQ.jpg?1
The gang at the gala...Tails is looking too adorable in that bowtie! I wonder what happened to Knuckles' bowtie?
RFEqnfy.png?1
Yeah that one. I find it odd that Knuckles wasn't even slightly dressed up for the occasion at the very least.

As for Episode 6 "Fortress of Squalitude" that's more like it in regards to the laughter! Without a doubt Dr. Eggman was the star of this episode to the surprise of no one.

glK2feK.png?1
Orbot and Cubot brought some laughs with their antics as well to make things even sweeter.

PjNmkDg.png?1
Amy and Dr. Eggman's interaction and banter was well done and I really enjoyed it. Knuckles was so silly that you couldn't help but to laugh at him even when he wasn't even trying to be funny.

KGt82Rx.png?1
The gang looked all sad at the dinner table without Amy there and I think Sonic and the gang learned a valuable lesson to be appreciate of Amy so that was nice to see too.

French is my second language, so I went on and watched the episodes in French (in fact, that's where I was able to find images of the 5th episode at this point). I really enjoyed them so I will continue watching the Sonic Boom episodes in French for an additional treat in addition to testing my comprehension skills with the language.

So at this point, the first 3 Sonic Boom episodes are my top 3 favorites respectively, followed by "Fortress of Squalitude", "My Fair Sticksy" and "Buster" being the weakest episode still IMO. Looking forward to more laughs and goodies come next week!

Episode 7:

After wrapping up a 13-hour day at work yesterday (and getting some sleep!) I was finally able to watch the newest episode and it definitely served as a nice treat for me after a long week :)

"Double Doomsday" was another episode centered around Dr. Eggman and per usual, this was a good thing. From him harassing Sonic at the cafe by cutting in line to his hilarious banter with Dave (and being a father figure to him at the same time and even arguing with him like such!),to his nagging to Sonic about a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, Dr. Eggman provided some good laughs (Orbot and Cubot were funny too amid the "poor baby!" moments!) and was definitely the star of this episode. Especially with this:

Fze1FRW.jpg?1
Dr. Eggman cracked me up with this little dance here. He really does steal the show in Sonic Boom! ;)

Going to put further thoughts and observations in spoiler tags:

h01vbRC.png?1
Although her appearance was brief in this episode, I like how Amy resolved to be the peace-keeper and help keep Sonic calm.

JC0AYpw.jpg?1
Sonic brought some laughs with the whole static electricity thing here.

wiUBkTq.png?1
This was a perfect opportunity blown for a faceplant to happen here as opposed to crashing through the ground. I'm disappointed.

Speaking of disappointed, you know what my biggest complaint of this episode was and what disappointed me the most? Something that was lacking? Or WHOM rather:

LAhj7nL.jpg?1
Where was Knuckles and Sticks?! I would of been fine with them having just a cameo at the very least but not having them show up in the episode at all? That's not cool with them getting the shaft like that as I really like all of the main characters in the cartoon. Especially Knuckles has he has had more than enough of that happening to him.

I really didn't notice the lack of music; Guess I was too busy laughing :P

I understand the purpose of stretching the few episodes out, but could they at least let a full month of this NEW cartoon to debut before they started repeating episodes?! Then again, this is the first cartoon I have actively followed in 20 years so this may be some norm in airing them that I'm totally unaware of. On a positive note, I'll be able to sleep in come next Saturday if it is indeed a repeat of the first 2 episodes (even though they are still my favorites! :D)

I'm honestly surprised to see the complaining regarding the Sonic Boom cartoon and even those that have declared that they are giving up on it only 7 episodes in. Oh well. As for the whole comedic approach, I honestly don't have a problem with it although I do understand where others are coming from on the matter. The fact that Sonic Boom has this 30 year old laughing time and time again-even to the point of tears at times-definitely means something and that they are doing right in my book with the approach as I enjoy it very much :)

Episode 8:

"Eggheads" was naturally another Dr. Eggman focused episode, and per usual, he did not disappoint with his antics that he brought to the table. Baking cookies to catch Sonic and friends off guard and even having them imitate him in personality and abilities? Brilliant. Just brilliant. Even more so when the beginning of the episode made it seem like Dr. Eggman was making this big, bad, and devastating invention that was marvelous to Dr. Eggman that would be extremely destructive; only for it to be a batch of evil cookies! :D
fy4HGkx.jpg?1
Those cookies actually look really good! :P And seeing that no one spit them out or expressed any disgust in eating the cookies, they must of tasted good too! Bonus points to Dr. Eggman for being a good baker!

Some other observations on my end are as follows:
RvfpsXo.png?1
Seriously, who eats cookies that are left on a person's doorstep?! That made everyone that ate a cookie automatically silly in this episode by that action alone.

rV8YeIL.png?1
This moment was bizarre and so hilarious that it left me in tears from laughing so hard. Amid the silliness that look on Knuckles' face is adorable. And that Rings and Green Hill Zone reference FTW! :)

G4ZOUKE.png?1
The best friends are fighting a vacuum cleaner gone wild!

1gjZKn2.png?1
Even though Sonic had no idea he was doing Tails any harm here, I thought it was sweet of Sonic to selflessly give Tails his very last cookie. Sonic didn't even give it a second thought before tossing it over to Tails.

XYspDjp.png?1
Didn't Classic Dr. Eggman say something about getting his teaching degree in Sonic Generations? ;) Anyway, I love this "classroom-instructor" scene. The "Eggheads" are busy taking notes and Orbot and Cubot are Dr. Eggman's "aides". The other "villainy lessons" administered were funny as well.

Overall it was a fun episode with plenty of laughs in-between that definitely left you guessing. I definitely wouldn't of guessed that Tails, Amy, Knuckles and Sticks would of had "Eggman mustaches" as an effect of eating those yummy cookies and Sonic resolving the problem that way caught me off guard. It was also really nice to hear Sonic say "You guys are my friends!" when he was being attacked by the Eggheads.
Since we are going to have a break for a few weeks in regards to Sonic Boom and new episodes:

q5zAqGO.png?1
Saturday mornings I can now sleep in on the soft, soft, bed-like ground.

I can't believe Season 1 has come and gone already! I tell you, that was a quick 5 weeks! If I was so rank the episodes from my favorite to least favorite it would be as follows: 1>2>3>8>7>6>5>4. Will "The Sidekick" ever be overthrown for being my favorite Sonic Boom episode with Sonic and Tails' bromance stellarly demonstrated? Will "Buster" continue to be the worst episode IMO? Only time will tell! I can't wait to see what is in store for Season 2 and beyond! :P

Good times. I'm so glad that I had these posts saved as I really enjoyed writing them!

I feel that even with the spoiler tags this post is getting too long so I'll re-share my takes of Episodes 9-15 of Sonic Boom at another time ;)

That said, now if I may, I would like to share my thoughts on Episode 16: "How to Succeed in Evil Without Really Trying". This episode was okay as it definitely wasn't one of my favorites. Especially with the whole Tails having another invention not working as intended in efforts to him trying to help, having the gang get mad at him for the invention causing trouble and Tails fixing the invention and it ends up saving the day at the end-yet again as this whole idea of a plot has happened several times already. Anyway, despite this not being the best of episodes IMO I still noticed quite a bit:

qExBGex.jpg?1
Tails has his wrench secured in a seat-belt!

8aEJRX9.jpg?1
Sticks continuing to be Sticks being odd as usual...This time she's talking to the beige berries

7KV95I5.jpg?1
Is Sonic seriously playing volleyball by himself?! That's interesting yet kinda sad.

Wbcurvd.jpg?2
Sonic is using "pedal power" again to power Tails' battery like he powered ur Dr. Eggman's fan in Episode 7 (Double Doomsday)

cZPjIfV.jpg?1
"I'd never leave the 'hog hanging!" I'm loving Sonic and Knuckles' playful interaction in Boom

tbN1uA1.jpg?1
Whether it is a magazine, a remote control or even a brick, Dr. Eggman never fails to bring laughs to these episodes!

5sI2iGi.jpg?1
Who knew Sticks was a baker? And a first place baker at that!

qhEW8eg.jpg?1
Familiar faces via Dave the Intern (Episodes 7 & 15), Willy Walrus (Episode 10) and a Weasel Bandit (Episode 9)

0s2RIRV.jpg?1
Dr. Eggman aka "Mr. Popularity" has a fan club which isn't surprising! That look on Dr. Eggman's face is hilarious!

Amid it's good points, Episode 16 was okay overall as it wasn't enough to deem this episode good enough for it to even be considered good IMO. Episode 17 on the other hand...Seems like it will be a good one and I'm looking forward to it!

TBF, the whole 'Sonic plays volleyball by himself' is probably going to get brought up again whenever Cabin Fever gets to air.

Since even Amy's "play" has him state he plays by himself because nobody else can keep up with him.

:P

Or that could be a hint that Cabin Fever may be airing soon. Like how the Gogoba cheif in Eggheads led to the next episode, Guilt Tripping.

Since the rollback lost it, here's a re-post of what one of the writers said about 'How to be an evil genius without really trying' on twitter:

All I'm going to say about tomorrow's #SonicBoom [How to be an evil genuis without really trying] is that it has ripple effects that last throughout the rest of the season.

I'm a little bit concerned over Don't Judge Me. Hopefully it will not cause offence to several people since it may be based on the judging tactics and make CN do something stupid, (You saw what happened to Steven Universe). Either way, it should be good.

I love how everything got an explanation. Why Knuckles was hired as Sonic's lawyer, where Amy was the entire episode...I loved the humor as well. Some highlights:

- Eggman's little black and white film

- Knuckles ordering himself as a witness

- The Judge getting annoyed at Fastivious Beaver

- Comedy Chimp, especially the ending

One of my favorites for sure!

Actually, I believe it's Sepia-toned,

And to answer your question, she left town for a few days, to attend a bee-keeping seminar.

I really want to see a comparison between the Shattered Crystal bonus & the dance scene in this episode now. I know this was probably made first, but if they were similar at all, that would be some coincidence.

Oh, & I think I missed all those explanations. I was kinda half-listening at some points in case somebody burst into my room, but anyway, more reason to re-watch it.

Dance scene? I didn't see that part.

Well, there was a clip at a disco party at one point, if I was not mistaken.
