Mistral is a cake walk,

Not if you don't make use of parrying like Ragna. biggrin.png

And to say nothing of the annoying ass Dwarf Gekkos. I beat her on my first try on Normal, but she didn't have her problems. Same with Monsoon.

HAHAHAHAAH!

Oh, and when you get to Jetstream Sam?

nuclear-explosion-4-pics-1-gif_4.jpg

That'll be you.

I got the sonofabitch at 1.3% of his health while still having 40% of mine and tried to get the last hit...only for the bastard to surprise me and kill me with his dashes.

So after a week of inconveniences, I finally got around to beating this game.  I haven't been this hyped for a game since The Orange Box, so I was nervous that it wouldn't live up to my expectations.  Somehow, it did.  I loved every moment of this game.  I'm fucking serious- if I could have sex with a video game, Metal Gear Rising would be my first choice.

This game has the most innovative melee combat since Devil May Cry.  It's brutish, swift, sharp, well paced and most of all, challenging.  Maybe it was different for people who played on Normal or Easy first, but this was the furthest thing from a button masher.  Since the combat is built with a focus on parrying over dodging, you can't just run up to enemies willy nilly and cartwheel out of the way whenever someone looks at you funny.  Raiden's not a pushover- he faces foes head-on and so should you.  The centerpiece of the combat is the Blade Mode system; enemies and objects can be cut at incredibly precise angles, which makes attacking feel incredibly tangible and intimate.  Zandatsuing is also incredibly satisfying, particularly on stronger opponents that put up more of a fight.  The only negative I have to say for the combat is that the camera can be very uncooperative at times, which can be very dizzying but the lock-on usually prevents it from being a hassle.

Another thing I was looking forward to is the story.  The plot of the Metal Gear series is a real grab bag that holds everything from deep sociopolitical commentary and interesting multi-faceted characters to soda-drinking monkeys in diapers and porno mags.  I never know what to expect from this series, and this game's departure from Kojima's vision for the series made it all the harder to guess how it would turn out.  As it turns out, it ties surprisingly well into MGS2 and 4, expanding upon the themes of memetics and war economics.  Thematically, it stands alongside works like Watchmen and Spec Ops: The Line, deconstructing the value of heroism and vigilantism in the context of war.  It's nothing revolutionary, but its told through an awesome cast of characters, including some very ambitious and interesting villains.  On top of that, despite Kojima not playing a major role in the creative side, it still has some of his idiosyncratic charms like codec conversations where characters go off into tangents about movies.

Another standout part of the game: the soundtrack.  I'm not particularly crazy about metal and dubstep, but then again I'm not too crazy about rap and hip hop yet Anarchy Reigns has of my favorite game soundtracks in recent memory.  Similarly, MGR has some really strong tracks as well.  But it's not the quality of the tracks themselves that impresses me so much as the awesome presence they bring to the game.  I have seldom felt more pumped playing a video game than when the vocals kick in for the climax of this game's boss battles.  Speaking of which, this game has some really awesome bosses.  As the battle continues, their attacks become more intense and diverse.  They feel almost choreographed they flow so well.

I'm really just gushing at this point; I just want to get across that this was an awesome game.  It may only be February, but I have a good feeling this will be in my top 5 this year.

Speaking of Blade Wolf, Platinum have got some DLC coming in the future for missions/story as Jetstream Sam and some Blade Wolf missions too, will be cool to see what he plays like since holy fuck is BW a lot faster than Raiden.

This better not be "PS3 exclusive in America, but multi-platform pratically everywhere else" bullshit like the VR mission DLC that's also coming.

Mistral is a cake walk, Monsoon and Armstrong on the other hand...

Mistral was way too easy.

She keeps spawning Dwarf Gekko which drops easy health all the time.

You cannot lose what so ever.

Downloaded the soundtrack. Can't say I'm too big a fan of it on its own (though it does sound very fitting), as I generally really dislike metal.

http://spong.com/article/29051/Kojima-I-Want-to-Make-Metal-Gear-Rising-2-with-Platinum

Metal Gear Solid creator Hideo Kojima has heaped a huge amount of praise on Metal Gear Rising developer Platinum Games, revealing that he would like to make a sequel to the action spinoff and would only consider partnering with the Bayonettastudio for the job.

In a roundtable attended by SPOnG, the producer also opined that Platinum is just a technological upgrade away from being "a world class studio."

"As far as [Metal Gear] Rising 2 is concerned, I really do have that in my mind, and I want to make it," Kojima explained. "And if we do make it, it would definitely be with Platinum. I don’t think anyone else could do it.

yes yes yes yesYESYESYESYEYSEYSSEYES

Yes. It's not even a week since the game came out and both Kojima and I are wanting a sequel. I've beaten the game on Normal and am going to tackle the last boss on Hard sometime this week. After that I'll be jumping up to Very Hard and eventually Revengeance, I'm just trying to get all the unlocks. Just, dang I can't get over how much I love this game. Can't wait for the DLC. And if that Japanese DLC sword with Snake's soul imbued into it doesn't make it over here so help me

There are two things I don't get with this game, having finished it.

"Parrying is too hard/Parrying sucks/I wish the parrying was better"

The parry mechanic in this game works perfectly, the moment an enemy even considers hitting you and you see the orange flash, press forward and weak attack. If you're too early you block, if you get it right you get the gnarly zandatsu counter. I don't really get how it could be any easier, considering how loose the timing for the block is. The way the parry is set out allows rad stuff like when you have to parry all the hits of a combo from an enemy, which kind of adds to the intense brawl feel throughout the rest of the game.

Now the one thing I think they could have done is explain it a tiny little  bit better, but I picked it up almost instantly playing the demo and that carried over into the final game, so I'm probably not the best judge of how hard or not hard the parrying is. I don't even know why people make so much of a big deal about it as some big skill based mechanic in the game. It's no harder than any other dodge i think.

The second thing I don't get- praise for the music.

Now let me preface this by saying that this game does something I absolutely love, and that's the blending or transitions of the music tracks during big fights. the thing where you'll thwack a boss good and part of the stage blows up or they go flying or you run down a building as the vocals kick in is ridiculously cool.

The problem is that the songs constructed around this are mostly completely dogshit. virtually every boss theme in the entire game is cheesy-as-fuck nu-metal. this isn't so bad when you're first playing, as the metal gear ray fight, bladewolf fight and Mistral fight are all pretty unique.

Mistral's in particular is fantastic, with a catchy piano/synth line in addition to the thrash guitars... when you first transition into the vocal part you feel like a fucking badass

But Mistral's theme is the last good boss theme you hear. and the rest in the game basically sound like variations on the ray one or bladewolf. Monsoon for example which is pretty cool instrumentality has this big dumb thrash metal vocal over the top of it. Sam's theme kind of has the same problem, and this is not mentioning the last boss theme, which is fun for about two minutes after which I never wanted to hear it again.

Like I get what they were shooting for, epic big badass battle themes, but they could have achieved that without taking the cheesiest possible route to get there. I don't even particularliy dislike metal, but I do dislike the bald men with goatee style buttrock they went with for most of the game >.>

I know what butt rock is, and I assume autosaver does too; he was just yanking your chain. Buttrock is something of a guilty pleasure for me at times, at least in games. You won't see my listening to the rubbish that is Nickelback, though.

Go back to your DmC wubstep, casual!

This statement bothers me. It's another way of saying "I have no idea what genre it is so I'm calling it nu-metal". Also, it is the furthest thing from nu-metal possible.

I love the boss themes. All have a different style to 'em and are constructed well to fit what they're going for. The final boss in particular is fucking nuts.

I turned down the voice and SFX about five notches just so I could hear the music. So good.

Oh shit Remz is topic invading xD

I like the soundtrack, but I don't like ALL the songs, I thought that Excellus' theme was pretty bland and just made me want to get it over with quicker, the final song was pretty cool though.

As for DLC, no it's definitely coming to US/EU too, at least Jetsream Sam and Blade Wolf are, the wooden sword imbued with Snake's voice however is only Japanese exclusive and was even said it was pretty much going to be a reward for the fans there, but speculation leads people to believe the reason WE aren't getting it, is because Konami didn't want to drag Snake's English VA into the studio to record a few lines for a wooden sword.

But it's not a great loss, I've already got all the costume DLC for Raiden since I picked up all the exclusive steelbooks lol :P Besides Fox Blade is waaaaay OP, you literally cut enemies up without entering Zan-Datsu lol.

The VR missions aren't Japanese exclusive though.  It's coming out everywhere, except American 360 owners are getting the shaft for no discernible reason.  I personally think it is a great loss because this is one of the few games out there where I want to pour a lot of money into.  It's that good.

EDIT: I think I'm getting a little confused here, I think I read somewhere that the sword comes with the VR missions.  Whatever, I'm still mad about the VR missions anyways.

EDIT 2: Fuck me, I found it.  Still angry.

Oh I know that, but I had no idea that US WEREN'T getting it... That's a bit... Shit, I hope they come up with a valid reason why, but I was more saying the wooden sword isn't a great loss to me personally.

They may not want to pay David Hayter to come in just to record a few "HURRRGHGHGH!!!!"s for the sword but...I can totally see him just doing that for free to be awesome and for a laugh.

Or better yet have him say...

David Hayter really loved that line so much.

I just completed normal difficulty. I'm not having any difficulty in beating the bosses, in fact I don't think I've been killed by one yet. Except for my first play through on easy fighting Metal Gear Ray, during the wall running sequence. I got hit and just drifted away from the wall. lol

I'm really crap at the VR missions though. I keep getting killed or failing in general. I also can't help but giggle whenever I die and one of the other characters goes "Raiden? Raiden!? RAAAIDEN!!" It's because of a stand up routine one of my favourite comedians did. He loves playing games too and was making jokes about how the game industry works and how he plays games. He does a bit about Metal Gear Solid.

The Metal Gear Solid bit is at 5:41.

Memes, memes everywhere!

Also I really love Blade Wolf. He's an awesome character. He needs more on screen action.

He needs his Blade Wolf rights.

Oh and I forgot to mention Mexican Raiden is the best thing ever.
