Sandler will voice a capuchin monkey, Cher's a giraffe, Favreau a bear, Stallone a lion and Apatow an elephant.

Jim Breuer, Faizon Love and Bas Rutten round out the voice cast.

The film centers on zoo animals trying to teach the zookeeper their methods of dating and mating to help him win back the woman of his dreams. Frank Coraci is directing from a screenplay by Jay Scherick and David Ronn, James, Rock Reuben and Nick Bakay.

Zac Efron to Produce and Star in Untitled Sexy Thriller

The Hollywood Reporter says that Zac Efron (17 Again) has signed to star in and executive produce an untitled thriller for which is being written by Leslie Dixon (Mrs. Doubtfire, The Thomas Crown Affair, The Heartbreak Kid)

The plot is being kept under wraps but it is described as "a sexy thriller." The deal continues the evolution of Efron from the teen heartthrob of the "High School Musical" franchise to a more mature leading man, and also sees him stepping into producing shoes. He will act as executive producer with Mandate's Nathan Kahane.

No director is on board as of yet.

Capt. Kirk: EFRON!

Well, at least it isn't another musical by Disney and sounds like a more serious role.

James Cameron Previews 24 Minutes of Avatar!

10z03tu.jpg

3094fpt.jpg

I've just returned from a preview screening of James Cameron's hugely anticipated movie "Avatar" at the Cinema Expo in Amsterdam and I'm still feeling the after effects of this jaw-dropping experience. First off, I'm really not a fan of the so called 3-D craze, that's currently taking Hollywood by storm. Before the "Avatar" screening, Fox showed us "Ice Age 3" in 3-D and although the movie is pretty entertaining, I don't understand why it has to be in 3-D. What is the added benefit? I just got a headache from the whole experience. For some reason or another, my eyes just can't get used to the 3-D experience. With it comes the fact that 3-D until now has been used as a gimmick.

Would "Avatar" change my mind? With anticipation I directed my attention to the 20th Century Fox show reel. After some pretty disappointing clips from other movies like "Gulliver's Travels" you could feel the tension in the theater. Then it appeared on the screen: AVATAR. After a brief introduction from cast members Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver, we were asked to put on the 3-D glasses (really uncomfortable, especially if you already wear a pair). Most of the scenes were from the first half of the movie.

In the first scene we see Sam Worthington's crippled ex-marine Jake Sully, who just arrived on the planet 'Pandora.' He's in a wheelchair and just rolled in to hear Colonel Quaritch, played by the impressive Stephen Lang, talk to the troops. He's giving a classic speech that every military leader gives at the beginning of a battle. Jake listens as an outsider to this speech. A melancholic smile appears on his face. Although the scene is in 3-D, I haven't really noticed it. Finally a director who doesn't feel the need to stick it in the audience's face with cheap tricks like pointing objects at the camera.

In the second scene Sigourney Weaver's Dr. Grace Augustine explains to Jake how the process of transporting your mind into an Avatar works. Although the scene is mostly exposition, we've got a good look at the lab and more importantly we get a first glimpse of the Avatars, the Na'Vi lookalikes. These tall blue creatures lie in water tanks, waiting for their human to 'jump' in their bodies. Besides Weaver and Worthington, the scene introduces Joel Moore's character Norm Spellman. As is usually the case with Moore, his character is the comic relief.

It's the third scene where my heart begins to pound like crazy. Jake and Norm will inhabit their Avatar for the first time. They enter some sort of capsule and - flash – their mind enters the blue creatures, now lying on hospital tables. And not before long Avatar Jake wakes up. And it took my breath away. I thought--just like you guys--that I've seen it all with Gollum, or The Hulk, but Cameron has done it again. These creatures seem so real, that within minutes you forget you're watching an enormous and very blue CGI character. Even the eyes are totally convincing. The characters have real personalities and a soul.

In the fourth scene the Avatars of Jake, Norm and Grace explore the jungle of Pandora. The surroundings remind me of a planet that appears briefly in "Revenge of the Sith." A lot of massive colorful flowers and plants grow everywhere. Jake's unbridled enthusiasm works on Grace's nerves. And not before long they have their first confrontation with some creatures. Some sort of rhino with a flower sticking out of his head looks like he will kill Jake, but he's not scared and he let's out a scream. The 'rhino' runs away, but not because of Jake. A more dangerous creature – a wolf? – jumps at Jake from behind.

In the next couple of scenes Jake meets Na'Vi Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). Jake finds himself alone at night in the jungle with only a torch as protection against some evil looking dogs. Eager to fight them, Jake says: 'What are you waiting for?' When one of the 'dogs' attacks him he slams the torch in the creature's face. A fight ensues that Jake can't win by himself. Lucky for him, there's Neytiri who with her trusty bow and arrow helps Jake chase away the creatures. Just when Jake wants to offer his gratitude, Neytiri knocks his reached out hand away and says to Jake that killing these creatures is a bad thing. When the scene fades out to black, my mind begins to work overtime. How the hell is it possible that I never once felt like I've been watching a movie where almost everything comes out of a computer?

The most beautiful scene follows directly after the one I've described above. When Jake wants to take his torch with him, Neytiri takes it from him and throws it in the river. Like magic the flowers and plants – even the grassy soil - begin to glow in the night. The beauty completely takes my breath away. Meanwhile we get to learn more about Neytiri and her people. Everybody who knows the story of Native American Pocahontas and John Smith, will recognize a lot of similarities. Before you can sing "Colors of the Wind," Neytiri guides Jake through her world. Mysterious flowing and glowing seeds from a mystic tree appear out of nowhere. To Neytiri's surprise Jake attracts them. She has a look in her eyes like he's the 'chosen one.' And of course she's right. Jake has to lead the Na'Vi into battle against the massive army of Colonel Quaritch.

In the next scene we meet the Banshees. The Na'Vi ride these fierce looking creatures when they hunt. After some exposition, where Neytiri explains to Jake that a Banshee first has to respect you, before you can ride it, she takes flight and another gorgeous scene unspools.

The last scene wasn't completed. What we saw, was sort of a video-game version of the mother of all battles. Countless numbers of Na'Vi riding their Banshees attack Quaritch's fleet. I can't wait to see the battle fully rendered.

Overall I was really impressed by what I saw. The effects are in a league of their own. After some disappointing or even pointless 3-D movies, "Avatar" maybe the first movie where 3-D is properly utilized.

Audio Review of TF2

Fincher In Talks for Facebook Film

The Hollywood Reporter says that Columbia Pictures is in advanced talks with David Fincher to direct The Social Network, the Aaron Sorkin-scripted film about the formation of Facebook.

The film will focus on the evolution of Facebook from its 2004 creation on the Harvard campus by sophomore Mark Zuckerberg to a juggernaut with more than 200 million members.

Facebook? More like failbook. This sounds like something made for TV, not for the big screen.

Writer Hired for Hitman Sequel

IESB reports that 20th Century Fox has hired writer Kyle Ward to write the sequel to 2007's Hitman, which made almost $100 million worldwide.

The first film, based on the video game of the same name, was directed by Xavier Gens and starred Timothy Olyphant, Dougray Scott, Olga Kurylenko, Robert Knepper, Ulrich Thomsen and Michael Offei.

Another d@mn unneeded sequel.

Belle will play his social worker daughter while Graham is her lesbian roommate who secretly sleeps with Spacey. Knoxville will play a store manager who hires Spacey's character after his prison stint.

Craig in Negotiations for Dream House

The Hollywood Reporter says that actor Daniel Craig is in early talks to star in Dream House, a psychological thriller set up at Morgan Creek to be directed by Jim Sheridan.

In the David Loucka script, Craig would play a man who moves his family to an idyllic small town, only to find his house haunted by its former inhabitants, who were murdered there.

Sounds like your averagely generic haunted house movie. So pass!

Reynolds to Star in Buried

Variety reports that Ryan Reynolds will star in Buried, a film about a civilian contractor who's kidnapped in Iraq and awakens buried in a coffin in the desert, armed only with a cell phone, a candle and a knife.

Rodrigo Cortes will direct a script by Chris Sparling.

Production on Buried will begin this month in Barcelona.

Nice hook for a movie.

Taylor-Compton Joins The Runaways

Coming Soon reports that Scout Taylor-Compton (Halloween) has been cast in The Runaways alongside Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning.

The film is based on the true story of the all-girl punk band in the 1970s with Compton playing Lita Ford, who was previously being played by Alessandra Torresani.

The Runaways is being directed and written by Floria Sigismondi and has already begun shooting in Los Angeles.

Snyder Talks 300 Sequel

Coming Soon reports that director Zack Snyder talked about his potential sequel to 300 during a Warner Bros. press conference.

Snyder said, "I know for a fact that Frank [Miller] is writing right now. [He's] drawing away and seems to be knee-deep in it. I think he's going to head back to Greece again and do another reconnaissance."

The filmmaker continued, saying that he wants the look and feel of a sequel to maintain that of 300, even though Miller's notes promise a grander scale:

"I think we would use the same technology... I don't want it to look too Star Wars-ian... Just from what [Miller] told me, it would be bigger as far as landscape and terrain. We're going to see Athens and the Aegean and other places. There would be an opportunity for bigger visions, though I'd hope for the same aesthetic. The tech we used for '300' was not a revolution. It's basically what the weatherman has. Look, instead of Accuweather it's Sparta... It's going to be the same way, but on crazier steroids."

I bet the sequels title would be 302 Spartans like 101 Dalmations.

Now with more steroid enhanced half naked males and more slow motion that takes fffffffoooooooooorrrrrrrreeeeevvvvvvvvveeeeeeerrrrrrr!

Harvey Weinstein Addresses Inglourious Basterds Cutting Rumors

In an interview with GQ, power producer Harvey Weinstein, of The Weinstein Company, addressed the rumors that he was forcing Quentin Tarantino to cut some 40 minutes off of Inglourious Basterds. Weinstein's reply - "No Fucking Way".

You can read his whole response below and read the whole interview here.

Those stories are all untrue. There’s no fucking way. Here, read my lips: That is nuts. Please don’t even write that, it’s insanity. There’s not even a question of that. Whatever you’re reading, it’s like some insane blogger… There’s no truth to any of this. He’s not gonna cut. What he’s doing is just reorganizing some scenes. I mean, the guy had six weeks to cut his movie [for Cannes]; most guys take six months. Most guys take a year. When I worked with Martin [scorsese], we’d do eighteen months in post-production. Quentin Tarantino cuts a movie in six weeks? Come on, there’s shit on that cutting-room floor that’ll blow your brains out. I was telling Quentin the opposite—"You should put that shit back in the movie." There’s scenes with Brad Pitt and the Basterds, and I’m praying he puts that shit back in, ‘cause it’s un-fucking-believably great. Listen—this movie will be between two hours and twenty minutes and two hours and twenty-seven minutes. I don’t think it’s going to be shorter—it’s just a question of rearranging. I know he’s putting footage back into the movie. I know he’s got some cool shit that he didn’t get time to address.

A 300 sequel? I sure hope not! 300 is soooo overrated (The Oscars agree, 'cos I sure didn't see any nominations for it!), and that THIS IS SPARTA! thing is getting pretty old.

The Smurfs Coming in 3D

Coming Soon reports that Columbia Pictures' CG/live-action hybrid film based on "The Smurfs" will hit theaters in 3-D.

The film will be based on the characters created in 1958 by Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, known throughout the world as Peyo. "The Smurfs" were created for a Belgian series of comic books, first as minor characters. The villagers, known for their blue skin and small statures, spawned a line of statuettes, games, toys, theme parks and a hit TV series.

The Colin Brady-directed film was written by J. David Stem and David Weiss.

Smurfs 3-D is scheduled for a December 17th, 2010 release.

Hopefully, it doesn't get smurfed up or crapped up.

Trio to Produce Havana Nocturne

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Eric Eisner, Gil Adler, and Shane McCarthy will produce Havana Nocturne, a story of gangsters in 1950's Cuba based on T.J. English's New York Times best-seller.

Havana Nocturne centers on a group of mainly American gangsters in Batista's Cuba, particularly Meyer Lansky, who run the freewheeling country's casinos, nightclubs and other debaucherous businesses, and the rivalries that emerge as they lead the high life. But the good times of their so-called "mobsters paradise" threaten to end when Castro's rebels and the Cuban Revolution begin to gather steam.

Matt Cirulnick has signed on to write the script.

Eisner said, "We really want to show Havana and Cuba as a character at a time that it's booming. This is about mobsters who don't only control a few business but try to control an entire country, and the tension that results when their plans go awry."

An American Werewolf in London to be Remade

Fangoria reports that Dimension Films, currently getting ready to release Rob Zombie's H2 and also developing the on-again-off-again remake of Hellraiser, will be going ahead with a remake of John Landis' An American Werewolf in London, who sold the rights of the film last week.

The Blu-ray edition of Landis' groundbreaking 1981 film may still arrive this fall, which is rumored to include Paul Davis' feature-length doc, Beware the Moon: Remembering 'An American Werewolf in London'.

What I find curious is that any of these remakes make any money. Its not like the arguable quality of the shitty Halloween or Friday the 13th movies, because those were reboots of a franchise that was long since dead (of course, Freddy vs Jason was well received and only a few years old, so WTF anyways). American Werewolf in London (and many, many of the other movies getting the remake treatment) is a great movie that is probably still good enough to simply be reshown in theatres like Star Wars was.

Director Matt Reeves Talks About Talks Let the Right One In Remake

Director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) talked to the Los Angeles Times about his upcoming English remake of Let the Right On In, the award-winning Swedish horror film.

"I was just hooked," Reeves told the newspaper. "I was so taken with the story and I had a very personal reaction. It reminded me a lot of my childhood, with the metaphor that the hard times of your pre-adolescent, early adolescent moment, that painful experience is a horror."

Reeves has finished a second draft of the script, now titled Let Me In. The film will be set in Reagan-era Colorado.

The production is also looking for the two leads, which Reeves vows will not be aged-up to make the film more of a smoldering Twilight-style romance. The story centers around Oscar, an overlooked and bullied boy who finds love and revenge through Eli, a beautiful but peculiar girl who turns out to be a vampire.

Let Me In? Sounds weak.

Pearce, Madison Join Don't Be Afraid of the Dark Remake

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Guy Pearce is in final negotiations and Bailee Madison is set to star with Katie Holmes in Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, the Troy Nixey-directed supernatural thriller.

The movie is based on a 1973 made-for-TV movie about a young girl who moves in with her father and his girlfriend and discovers they are sharing the house with demonic creatures.

Madison will play the girl, who discovers the creatures and is fascinated by them -- until they prove dangerous. Pearce will play the father, an author frustrated by his daughter's tales of monsters, not believing her even when his girlfriend (Holmes) backs her.

Guillermo del Toro and Matthew Robbins wrote the script.

Don't Be Afraid of the Dark is set to begin production next month in Melbourne, Australia.

Another remake.... at least Del Toro is part of the script writing. Funny, at 1st, I thought it was an Are You Afraid of the Dark movie, but possibly never gonna happen unless Hollywood is more desperate than it is now.

Adams Signs on for The Fighter

Variety reports that actress Amy Adams will star opposite Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale in David O. Russell's The Fighter.

The drama revolves around the life of boxer "Irish" Mickey Ward (Wahlberg) and trainer-brother Dick Eklund (Bale), chronicling their early days on the rough streets of Lowell, Massachusetts, through Eklund's battle with drugs and Ward's eventual world championship in London.

Adams will play Charlene, a tough, gritty bartender and former college high-jumper who ends up dating Mickey.

Melissa Leo also has been cast as Wahlberg and Bale's mother.

The Fighter begins shooting next month in Lowell.

Scotts Unstoppable Put on Hold

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Denzel Washington-Tony Scott runaway-train film, Unstoppable, is slowing down as a result of disagreements over the appropriate budget.

The project was aiming for a fall shoot -- it is in an early stage of pre-production -- and Washington and Scott said as recently as several weeks ago they were moving forward on that assumption.

But the studio has concerns about the cost of physical production on the action-heavy film, which could lead to the project being put on hold.

Neither the main acting deals for Washington and Chris Pine nor Scott's directing deal are closed.

Lee, Trachtenberg Join A Couple of Dicks

Coming Soon reports that Jason Lee and Michelle Trachtenberg have joined the cast of Warner Bros. action-comedy A Couple of Dicks, starring Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan.

The Kevin Smith-directed film, written by Robb and Marc Cullen, centers on a pair of cops who track down a stolen baseball card, rescue a Mexican beauty and must deal with gangsters and laundered drug money.

Trachtenberg will play the daughter of Willis' character, and Lee will portray her stepfather.

Ramon Rodriguez to Have Bigger Role in Next TF

The Los Angeles Times says that Ramon Rodriguez, who plays Leo Spitz in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will be back for the third installment

Director Michael Bay has a third "Transformers" film in mind, and if it plays out as he expects, the next installment would have a more substantial role for Rodriguez. The filmmaker, speaking at his office a few weeks before "Revenge of the Fallen" was released, seemed to have some pride of discovery when talking about Rodriguez.

"I've worked with big stars, people like Will Smith, Sean Connery and Bruce Willis, but casting is a weird thing, it takes you places you don't expect," Bay said. "We went looking for a sidekick in this movie, Shia's sidekick, and we find this new kid who really pops on screen. I think he’s going to have a real bright career. It's great to work with big stars, but it's always fun to discover people."

Another one? I guess the next movie will have 75% more explosions than the last. Less screen time for the TF and more of the humans who couldn't possibly act and probably more annoying.

Paramount in Buying Mode after TF Weekend

The Hollywood Reporter says that new Paramount President, Adam Goodman, is wasting no time getting into buying mode after a blockbuster weekend from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Goodman has picked up an untitled action-comedy pitch from screenwriter Shane Salerno (Armageddon, AVP: Requiem) about “super repo men who reclaim high-end jets and boats from rich but delinquent (and often hostile) clientele.” The project is inspired by Marc Weingarten's recent Salon.com article, "License to Steal."

"Transformers" co-writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci are producing along with David Ellison.

"We're thrilled to be working with Shane, who's a wildly inventive and talented creator," said Kurtzman and Orci. "His passion was clear the minute he started telling his story. He has crafted a smart, lighthearted action movie that's fun and topical, with a ton of unexpected plot twists. It's a Butch-and-Sundance two-hander set in a world that'll feel warmly familiar to people, yet it's one they've never really seen before."

MTV recently caught up with Iron Man 2 co-star Samuel L. Jackson, who said fans will likely have to wait for The Avengers for Nick Fury to see some action.

Along with dropping some hints about Fury’s potential brawl, Jackson also told MTV News that he’s done filming on the project, adding that most of his scenes were shot with Robert Downey Jr., but there were also a few with Scarlett Johansson, too.

Iron Man 2 comes to theaters on May 7th, 2010.

Rogen and Streisand to Co-Star in Road Movie?

First Showing reports that Seth Rogen is attached to and developing a road comedy called Mother's Curse that he'll co-star in with Barbra Streisand.

Rogen and an unspecified team are still working on a script and their may be some rewrites in the future, but Rogen referred to it as "one of the many projects I may or may not do in the next fifteen years."

Nighy Grabs Role in Deathly Hallows

Coming Soon reports that actor Bill Nighy tells the British paper The Independent that he's just signed on to play a role in the two-part seventh Harry Potter installment, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Nighy said, "I don't think I'm allowed to say it but I'm going to be in the next Harry Potter film. I won't say which character, but he's a goodie. I just got the gig."

Harry Potter fansite The Leaky Cauldron believes the veteran actor will be playing Rufus Scrimgeour, a veteran Auror in the Ministry of Magic who spends most of his time fighting Dark Wizards.

Karl Malden Dies at Age 97

The LA Times reports that Oscar Winning actor Karl Malden has died today at age 97.

One of Hollywood's strongest and most versatile supporting actors, Malden won an Oscar playing his Broadway-originated role as Mitch in A Streetcar Named Desire.

In a movie career that flourished in the 1950s and '60s, Malden played a variety of roles in more than 50 films, including the sympathetic priest in On the Waterfront, the resentful husband in Baby Doll, the warden in Birdman of Alcatraz, the outlaw-turned-sheriff in One-Eyed Jacks, the pioneer patriarch in "How the West Was Won," Madame Rose's suitor in Gypsy, the card dealer in The Cincinnati Kid and Gen. Omar Bradley in Patton.

He was born Mladen Sekulovich in Chicago on March 22, 1912, the son of an immigrant mother from the nation that later became Czechoslovakia and a Serbian father, who delivered milk for 38 years. Malden spoke little English until after his family moved from their Serbian enclave in Chicago to the steel-mill community of Gary, Ind., when he was 5.

Malden's father was a theater lover who staged Serbian plays in the church and in Serbian patriotic organizations in Gary. As a teenager, Malden played heavies -- usually Turks, complete with a big, black mustache -- in his father's productions.

Alternatively, it was a hilariously shitty movie, just like the first one, but as a summer popcorn movie it gets the job done. Explosions, boobs, cars, the whole nine yards. Considering it was a Mr. Explosion film, it was amazingly decent, and good fun so long as you turn your brain off.
