MacGruber Coming to the Big Screen

Some shit you just cannot make up...

Production Weekly says that Jorma Taccone will direct MacGruber, based on the Saturday Night Live sketch parody of the TV show MacGyver.

The sketch stars Will Forte and Kristen Wiig. Richard Dean Anderson (who played the title role in the "MacGyver" series) has also appeared on "MacGruber." The shorts are written by Forte, John Solomon, and Taccone.

Taccone is responsible for creating the character and directed most of the spots with the exception of the Jonah Hill and Shia LaBeouf episodes, which were both directed by John Solomon.

Haven't we already that most movies based off of SNL skits end up being bad? Ex. Ladies Man, Superstar, Night at the Roxbury, Blues Brothers 2000.

The Game May Play B.A. in The A-Team

Is Mr. T really too old to reprise this role? He looks basically the same, aside from apparently not hitting the gym as much. After all, there is only one Mr. T.

Braveheart Writer to Rewrite Captain Nemo

The Hollywood Reporter says that Randall Wallace (Braveheart) has been brought aboard to rewrite Captain Nemo: 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Disney's McG directed take on the classic Jules Verne character.

The film aims to tell the origin of Captain Nemo and his submarine warship, the Nautilus. Nemo is a mysterious but noble antagonist in the book, a scientific genius with a thirst for knowledge and a desire for revenge against the forces of imperialism.

They better not use Will Smith, Dwayne Johnson, Will Ferrell, or Brandon Fraser as the main role.

Ryan Phillippe and Val Kilmer in Negotiations for MacGruber

So..yesterday we reported that there would be a big screen version of the SNL sketch, MaGruber. Well, if you weren't exactly buying into it, today the Hollywood Reporter says that not only is the movie being fast-tracked but that Ryan Phillippe and Val Kilmer are in negotiations to star in the film.

Yes, you read correctly...

The "MacGruber" sketches starred Forte as MacGyver's son with Wiig as an assistant who always find themselves, along with that week's guest star, in a control room with a ticking bomb about to go off. MacGruber gets sidelined by personal issues, and the bomb goes off.

Forte and Taccone wrote the parodies with John Solomon. The trio wrote the feature script, which takes the story in a completely different direction from the skits yet remains strangely familiar: The legendary, much decorated MacGruber is pulled out of retirement as a monk in Ecuador by a colonel, who needs him once more to fight on behalf of his country. This time the mission involves going up against the evil Cunth, who has a nuclear warhead; the mission is personal because Cunth killed MacGruber's bride.

The movie version would see Phillippe playing Piper, an Army officer forced to pair up with a reluctant MacGruber. Kilmer would be Cunth.

ScoobyDoo Director Gets Nods for Smurfs Movie

The Hollywood Reporter says that Raja Gosnell (Scooby-Doo, Beverly Hills Chihuahua) will direct the live-action/animated hybrid movie, TheSmurfs, for Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation.

Jordan Kerner (Charlotte's Web) is producing while J. David Stem and David N. Weiss (Shrek 2, Shrek the Third) and Audrey Wells (George of the Jungle) wrote the script.

"With Raja coming aboard, we now have a brilliant director who has proven time and again that he has a deft touch in blending the worlds of physical comedy and honest emotion with both live action and photo-real animated characters," said Kerner. "Our three-apple-high heroes are in good hands, and we feel absolutely positively Smurfy to be working with him."

The film will be released in both 3D and 2D formats on Dec. 17, 2010

This doesn't sound good at all. The Scooby Doo movies sucked and Beverly Hills Chihuahua as well from what I've heard.

The Crow Remake May Not Be a Remake?

MTV's Splash Page says that the announcement that Blade director Stephen Norrington was planning to helm a remake of 1994’s The Crow but that it was met with a cold response from both fans and the director, Alex Proyas.

They say now that an undisclosed source tells Comics2Film that Norrington’s upcoming installment in the “Crow” franchise will not be a remake, but an entirely new concept altogether. In other words, the iconic role of Eric Draven will not be revisited in the new movie.

“[it's] very different from the original,” the source claims. “A whole new story about a whole new character.”

Thank goodness!

Gary Ross to ReWrite Spiderman 4

Will Smith Reteaming with Francis Lawrence for The City That Sailed

The Hollywood Reporter says that I Am Legend director Francis Lawrence will re-team with Will Smith for the fantastical drama, The City That Sailed at 20th Century Fox.

Written by Andrew Niccol, the story follows a New York City street magician whose daughter, because of family circumstances, lives in England. In exploring a lighthouse one day, the girl discovers a room with magic candles and wishes to be reunited with her father, causing the island of Manhattan to break away and drift across the Pond.

Sounds like something made for 2D or 3D animation which is what I'm hoping for.

Tarantino Says Basterds is Actually Longer, Not Shorter

Quentin Tarantino sat down with Variety to discuss his upcoming WWII film, Inglourious Basterds. Amongst many things discussed, Tarantino addressed the rumors that the Weinstein's asked him to shorten the film; calling them "lies" and he goes on to say that Basterds is actually a minute longer what was screened at Cannes.

You can read the full interview here but below are a few excerpts.

On the rumors that he was asked to cut the film:

I’ve heard these rumors that the studios told me to cut out 40 minutes. These are complete lies. The movie is actually a minute longer, in running time, than it was in Cannes. It was 2:28, without end credits, and now it’s 2:29, or 2:32 with end credits.

On whether the actors would be down for a prequel:

All through the movie, Brad Pitt and Eli Roth just kept saying, “Prequel. Prequel.” Brad would say, “Let’s talk him into doing a prequel.” The guys love the idea. I’ve got the storyline. Then again, I was going to do all these animated prequels to Kill Bill. I didn’t end up doing any of those.

On whether Tarantino's commercial hopes are escalated with having Pitt as a star of the film

I’ve normally relied on my name for the most part. The hope is, I’ll bring my fans and he’ll bring his. Overseas, Brad’s following is intense, just crazy, but so is mine. The hope is, us working together, that’ll be a draw. I can honestly say though that if Brad Pitt wasn’t a star and I’d found him in the casting process, I would have lobbied for him to get this role.

Mel Gibson to Star in Jodie Foster's Beaver

Variety reports that Mel Gibson will star in The Beaver for director Jodie Foster.

Gibson will play a depressed man who finds solace in wearing a beaver hand-puppet. On top of directing, Foster will play the role of the man's wife.

Foster boarded the project and brought it to Gibson, with whom she co-starred in 1994's Maverick.

Note:...there are too many jokes in this one for us to pick just one so we leave it to you.

ROFLMAO, Jodie Foster's Beaver  .

Cooper, Reynolds and Timberlake for Green Lantern Lead

The Hollywood Reporter says that Bradley Cooper(The Hangover), Ryan Reynolds and Justin Timberlake are the three front-runners for The Green Lantern at Warner Bros. Pictures.

Warner Bros., along with director Martin Campbell and producers Donald De Line and Greg Berlanti have sent the past five months searching for the actor to play Hal Jordan, the hot-shot Air Force pilot who is chosen by a dying alien to be his successor in an intergalactic police force known as the Green Lanterns.

Other actors in the early mix included Michael Fassbender(300), Henry Cavill and Jared Leto.

The Hollywood Reporter adds that De Line, Campbell and the studio each had a different favorite among the three finalists.

The studio is targeting a June 17, 2011 release for the film.

I'd choose Reynolds or Cooper, not Timberlake.

Zooey Deschanel Joins Your Highness

The Hollywood Reporter says that Zooey Deschanel is joining the cast of the Universal Studios comedy, Your Highness.

The film, written by Ben Best and Danny McBride (Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express) centers on an arrogant, lazy prince (McBride) who must complete a quest to save his father's kingdom. Joining him on the quest is his more heroic brother (James Franco). Deschanel will play Belladonna, Franco's virginal bride.

Natalie Portman plays McBride's love interest, a warrior princess.

Due Date then Hangover 2 Next Up for Todd Phillips

Variety reports that Todd Phillips will next direct the road trip comedy Due Date, followed one year later by the sequel to The Hangover.

Zach Galifianakis will play one of the two leads in Due Date. In the comedy about fatherhood, an expectant dad and his unlikely travel companion race cross-country in hopes of making it home for the birth of his first child.

The Hangover has just crossed the $210 million domestic gross mark and surpassed Wedding Crashers to become the second-biggest grossing R-rated comedy ever. Warner Bros. believes The Hangover will finish around $240 million to become the biggest domestic grossing comedy ever (surpassing Beverly Hills Cop's $234 million) and the third-highest grossing R-rated film ever, behind The Passion of The Christ and The Matrix Reloaded.

As much as I liked The Hangover, it doesn't really need a sequel.

Woah Woah Woah!. There are some movies that you just don't tamper with. The Crow is one of them. Especially since Brandon Lee, Bruce Lee's friggin' son, died during the movie and the movie turned into a cult classic. Hollywood can go to hell.

Ryan Reynolds is The Green Lantern

Variety says that Ryan Reynolds has landed the role of the Green Lantern for Warner Bros. Pictures.

We reported yesterday that it was down to Reynolds, Justin Timberlake Bradley Cooper. Reynolds and his camp entered negotiations for the part Friday, after the studio held two rounds of screen tests, along with actors Bradley Cooper and Jared Leto. Justin Timberlake also did a screen test. The studio had holding options on the actors, but, except for Reynolds, those expired Monday. Reynolds' option would have expired end of day Friday.

The "Green Lantern" was created in 1940 by writer Bill Finger and artist Martin Nodell. Introduced in 1959, Hal Jordan is a second-generation test pilot, an ordinary man who was given the power ring and battery (lantern) by a dying alien named Abin Sur. When Abin Sur's spaceship crashed on Earth, the alien used his ring to seek out an individual to take his place as Green Lantern: someone who was "utterly honest and born without fear."

The film will be directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, GoldenEye) and is scheduled for a June 17, 2011 release.

Well, at least, it wasn't JT.

The Pink Panther 2? Now, I'm discouraged to see this film even more, and the name change sounds like a ripoff than a remake.

Washington Drops Out of Unstoppable

Variety reports that Denzel Washington has dropped out of the Tony Scott-directed Unstoppable, which will co-star Chris Pine (Star Trek).

After cutting the $107 million budget down to $100 million, 20th Century Fox wanted it in the low $90 million range. The studio asked Scott to cut his salary from $9 million to $6 million, and wanted Washington to shave $4 million off his $20 million fee. Washington declined.

However, after Washington's camp made that decision, Fox prepared to come back to the table with a different offer that the studio hoped would entice the actor to re-consider his decision.

Washington had planned since April to re-team with Scott, this time to play a veteran engineer who jumps into a locomotive with a young conductor (Pine) to halt an unmanned runaway train filled with a toxic chemical.

Hudgens to Bare All for Sucker Punch

Metro UK reports that Vanessa Hudgens has revealed that she is to strip off as a hooker in Zack Snyder's Sucker Punch.

Hudgens says about her role in the film:

I'm playing a character named Blondie and it's set in a brothel in the 1950s, so there's not a whole lot of clothes. It'll be gun training, stunts, fighting and all that craziness. I can't wait. I'm so excited. I've wanted to do an action film for a while. I think this is my time to really step it up and get to grow up. It will be somewhat different with the content and a few more foul words but that's the biggest difference.

Sucker Punch will hit theaters on March 25th, 2011.

Darren Aronofsky May Ditch Robocop for Black Swan

According to Collider (via The Hollywood Reporter), Darren Aronofsky may be leaving the Robocop reboot project at MGM in favor of directing Fox Searchlight's Black Swan, starring Natalie Portman.

While THR won’t go as far to say that Aronofsky is off the project, they’re noting that putting “Black Swan” first makes his commitment to “Robocop” a fairly tight fit. THR notes that MGM could hold off on filming “Robocop” till summer 2010 and still make their 2011 target release date. Still, it’s not like MGM is hurting for material as they have “Bond 23″ coming up as well as Guillermo del Toro’s two-part adaptation of “The Hobbit”.

Willem Dafoe to Star in Disney's John Carter of Mars

Variety says that Willem Dafoe will star alongside Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins in the fantasy epic, John Carter of Mars , for Walt Disney Pictures. The film will be directed by Andrew Stanton (Wall-E).

Dafoe will play the role of Tars Tarkas, a fierce green Martian warrior, who's unusual among his savage race for his ability to love. Tars develops an alliance with John Carter in the first film, which is based on "A Princess of Mars."

He fights battles alongside Carter through the entire series of Edgar Rice Burroughs books, so he will be hanging around for sequels.

I hope it's animated.
