I would actually really like to see a Monsters Inc. 2. That was my favourite Pixar and it would be so sweet to see Boo again, so I am in agreement with Gabzie here. =D

Monsters Inc. was merely a good film in my eyes, but it's regarded by many I know to be among the greats of animation, and indeed cinema history as a whole. I look forward to a sequel purely because Sully is an amazing character and the.. one-eyed thing was I think voiced by the same great man who voice Timon from The Lion King.

I loved the first Monsters Inc, despite not having seen it in a while, so I don't mind seeing a second one. I'm curious to see how it turns out.

Wes Craven Discusses New Scream Trilogy

Last week there was news that Courteney Cox Arquette and David Arquette are in talks to star in a new "Scream" trilogy.

Digital Spy spoke with Wes Craven, director of the first three movies, about the new project.

Craven told Digital Spy that he is willing to read the script; which is expected to be done in August. He'll then make a decision as to whether or not he will direct the films. He also mentions that the Arquettes are confirmed to star and are the only ones returning from the original trilogy.

You can read the full interview here

Harold Ramis on GB3

The folks over at Coming Soon had an exclusive with Harold Ramis where they inquired about the status of the 3rd installment in the Ghostbusters series which he has been developing with the writers of Year One, Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg. You can read the full article here but below are some excerpts.

"I wrote the story for the new movie with them, and Dan and I've been consulting. We're just waiting to see a first draft and where we are," Ramis told us, although he's very optimistic it will happen with Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson returning as well. "Everyone says they'll do it, they've all said they'll do it. No one has signed anything yet--we haven't signed anything either--but there's the spirit of willingness in the air."

He did confirm that there will be a younger cast donning the backpacks and outfits with the original cast acting more as mentors to them. "Oh, yeah. There will be new Ghostbusters. It's not about us running around. We'll be introducing new people."

Hopefully, it'll be good and keep the theme song without remixing it, putting it to another genre, and/or let some other band or singers singing it like The Jonas Bros *shudders.

Marvel Studio's Kevin Feige Updates on Iron Man, Thor and More

First Showing sat down with Kevin Feige, Marvel's president of production, to discuss some of their upcoming projects. Below are some excerpts but you can read the full article here which includes bits about The Avengers and Captain America

Iron Man 2

Feige said that they intend to keep the first film's sense of humor and the tone and what they wanted to improve upon was adding more characters while maintaining that tone with a wider ensemble and upping the action.

On Black Widow, Feige says that her character has "two sides" - her entrance is as an assistant to Tony Stark, but she is later revealed to be a character named Black Widow.

Thor

Feige confirmed that Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston were officially cast and explained that it was tough to find a classic villain that could be sustained over the course of many films and provide the hero with a challenge while also being a mirror of that hero.

That should give you an idea of where that franchise is heading

...and More

Feige also confirmed that Samuel Jackson and Scarlett Johansson, Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston are signed on for multiple movies or "multiple franchises."

Franco to Star in In Praise of Shadows

Variety reports that James Franco is set to star in In Praise of Shadows, an indie drama written and directed by Jay Anania.

Anania is head of the directing program at the graduate film school at NYU, where Franco just completed his first year, while simultaneously completing his master's degree in English at Columbia U.

The drama tells the story of William Vincent (Franco), and recounts his eccentric and curious journey that brought him back to New York City after four years in exile to rescue the woman he loves from a crime syndicate.

In Praise of Shadows will start production June 15th in New York City.

The Howards to Team Up on The Originals

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal and Imagine have picked up The Originals, a drama written by Bryce Dallas Howard and writing partner Dane Charbeneau that could serve as a directing vehicle for her father, Ron Howard.

The Originals is an ensemble film about a group of twentysomethings who reconvene for a weekend in New York after learning that the teacher who shaped their childhoods has fallen into a mysterious coma.

The project is currently in development, as Ron Howard has not picked his next film to direct.

Half-Blood Prince IMAX Release Delayed

The Hollywood Reporter says that Warner Bros. Pictures will release Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince in theaters on July 15th, but it will only hit two IMAX screens in New York and Los Angeles that day.

The wide IMAX release won't be until July 29th.

The two-week delay is fallout from the decision by Warner Bros. to push Half-Blood Prince from its originally-scheduled November 2008 opening. The new July opening overlaps with IMAX's month-long window dedicated to Paramount's Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Eh, I don't think I have IMAX where I live so it doesn't bother me. Besides, I just want to watch since it'll be awesome with or without IMAX.

Cooper and Neeson in Talks for The A Team

According to The Hollywood Reporter and Variety, actors Bradley Cooper and Liam Neeson are in negotiations to star in The A-Team.

Cooper is in talks to play Lt. Templeton "Faceman" Peck and Neeson as Col. John "Hannibal" Smith in the film adaptation to be directed by Joe Carnahan.

The A-Team is about a group of former war vets on the run from the military after being framed, having adventures along the way.

The screenplay has been written by Derek Haas and Michael Brandt, and it already has a release date of June 11th, 2010.

Ash I definitely don't think that Monsters Inc. is the greatest animation ever. It is my favourite Pixar that is all. There are far superior films both in story and animation out there that I put in my top five. M.I. is merely one of the most enjoyable Pixar films for me.

I agree PSI they did sort of leave Monsters Inc. on a potential sequel basis. I am excited to see what comes of it all.

Mike? He was voiced by Billy Crystal. Timon was voiced by Nathan Lane.

I'm not the biggest fan of Monsters Inc. either, I think the film's setting had a lot of unused potential. Now they've swapped to "laughter" energy, a lot of room for ideas has gone.

But if anyone can sort that out, its Pixar.

Fox Wants Ridley Scott to Direct Aliens Prequel

EW picked up a story by The Playlist that says 20th Century Fox wants Ridley Scott to direct the Alien prequel rather than commercial director Carl Erik Rinsch.

The Scotts have given their approval of Rinsch, but Fox has some conflicting ideas and they don't want to greenlight another Alien film without Ridley in the Director's chair.

Further complicating matters are Tony Scott's comments about Rinsch being "part of the family," - Rinsch is "romantically involved with Ridley's daughter."

The studio and the Scotts are looking at returning to the original concept of just one alien creature and casting a new Ripley, previously played by Sigourney Weaver.

LaBeouf Says "No" to Y:The Last Man Film

Wizard recently sat down with Shia LaBeouf, who said that he will not be playing the lead character Yorick Brown in the adaptation of Brian K. Vaughn and Pia Guerra's Y: The Last Man.

LeBeouf said, "I'm not willing to make that movie currently, and may be too old to play the role by the time it does come around."

The project would have reunited him with D.J. Caruso, who directed LaBeouf in Eagle Eye and Disturbia.

LaBeouf thinks that Yorick is too similar to his Transformers role of Sam Witwicky: "You take Sam and you put a monkey on his shoulder. I don't know if it's that big a differential. It seems like he's the ordinary guy in an extraordinary situation again."

Anyone ever heard of the 1981 cult classic "Heavy Metal"?

Well apparantly there's gonna be a new one

from rotten tomatoes

It’s your one-way ticket to midnight,

call it HEAVY METAL …

I did not see this coming, but Paramount Pictures is making an animated film based on Heavy Metal, the 1970s sci-fi/fantasy magazine that spawned the 1981 cult classic film Heavy Metal and a mediocre sequel in 2000, Heavy Metal 2000.

Director David Fincher is spearheading the film project and will direct one of the planned eight or nine individual animated segments. Kevin Eastman — co-creator of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and current owner and publisher of Heavy Metal, will also direct a segment, as will Tim Miller, whose Blur Studios will handle the animation for the feature. The trio will also produce the film, and the studio is currently hiring more directors, a different one for each segment.

As with the original movies, and in keeping with trademark style of the magazine — erotic and violent storylines and images — the new animated feature is being conceived as an R-rated, adult-themed film.

Heavy Metal magazine debuted in the United States in 1977 and introduced the works of American artists and writers such as Robert Silverberg, Harlan Ellison, and H.R. Giger.

I haven’t picked up the magazine since the 1980s, but the 1981 Ivan Reitman-produced film Heavy Metal — which had comedy geniuses John Candy, Eugene Levy, and Harold Ramis in the voice cast — is one of my favorites of all times. And while I always thought the Soundtrack should have been a little heavier, I love it nonetheless (especially the Sammy Hagar title track and Black Sabbath’s “Mob Rules”).

How will a Heavy Metal movie appeal to today’s audiences? While I have faith in Fincher, I’m wondering how faithful the film will be to original style of the magazine and what type of animation will it be? And dear lord, who will be on the soundtrack?

I’ll be keeping my eye on this one.

I liked the movie myself. course I might be the ONLY one on SSMB who's heard of this movie but whateva!

First Look at Mickey Rourke as Whiplash in Iron Man 2

In a USA Today article, it's revealed that Whiplash sports a power pack on his chest that looks similar to the one used by Iron Man. "The technologies are definitely related, and that's part of the core theme of the film," says Favreau.

The character's alter ego, Ivan Vanko, is a Russian who, Favreau says, "has constructed his own version of a suit." Among the creative alterations: a pair of whips, powered by the suit's glowing chest piece. Whiplash "is going to light them up," says Rourke.

Iron Man 2 opens on May 7, 2010 and stars Rourke, Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Favreau, Sam Rockwell, Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Garry Shandling, John Slattery, Kate Mara and Clark Gregg

So, what do you think?

Roth to Remake The Funhouse

Fangoria has announced that horror director Eli Roth may be remaking an 1980s horror classic, Tobe Hooper's The Funhouse, as his next film.

As for what to expect in the remake, Roth says:

"You have Marco the Magician sawing his daughter in half, the brothers who run the carnival and the funhouse setting. And then it’s all about this weird mutant thing. It should be about the kids getting killed in horrible ways, put in different contraptions in the funhouse and the final girl being strapped into the ride and sent into the tunnels to be confronted by terrifying tableaux of her dead friends. A smart remake could be so much fun. Kill the kids in fabulous ways and continually reuse the bodies by making them freaks in the freak museum, sew their eyes shut, waxworks… That's the stuff I want to do in a remake of The Funhouse."

Joy...another remake.

Eisenberg, Angarano to Star in Ceremony

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Michael Angarano has signed on and Jesse Eisenberg is in negotiations to star in Ceremony, a comedy from Max Winkler, who is making his feature directorial debut.

Also written by Winkler, the comedy follows a young man (Eisenberg) who falls hard for an older woman about to be married. The infatuation prompts him to take along his unwitting friend (Angarano) to a beach town in an effort to break up the wedding. Upon arriving, the young men quickly realize just how out of place they are among the stately British groom-to-be and his guests.

Winkler said, "Jason [Reitman] encouraged me to write this movie. His company works with first-time filmmakers and he's really taken me under his wing. It's nice to have somebody who has been there before and can help you with the anxiety and questions."

Production is due to start this fall, with casting under way for the other roles.

Cohen to Direct Medieval

Variety reports that director Rob Cohen has backed out of reteaming with Vin Diesel on xXx: The Return of Xander Cage to direct Medieval for New Regency.

Alex Litvak and Michael Finch penned the script with McG producing.

Cohen, who studied anthropology and European history at Harvard, said he was drawn by the opportunity to tap into the historical period and create a heightened reality with big action pieces. Regency has kept the script hush-hush, but sources said the action brings together warriors from disparate cultures.

"It was a tough decision about xXx, " Cohen said. "I talked to Vin over the weekend and said I hoped they would wait, but that if they find another director who's right for the sequel, I certainly wouldn't be angry. But I could not let something like this go."

Cohen hopes to get Medieval into production by October.

Craven Dishes on Scream 4

Digital Spy caught up with Wes Craven, the creator and director of the original three Scream movies, to confirm or deny the rumors about the Arquettes returning for Scream 4 and to give an update on the status of the film.

Craven said that writer Kevin Williamson is indeed writing three films, of which some of the cast will return: "I've been told, and I don't think they'll mind if I say this, the deals on David Arquette and Courteney [Cox Arquette] are virtually set. I believe everybody else will be new."

As for who is directing, Craven says, "Bob Weinstein has talked to me, he's interested in me directing it. I had a brief conversation with Kevin. I know that Kevin is writing. What I've said to Bob is I'm not closed to it, I'm not open to it, I'll be perfectly happy to read a script and tell him what I think. That's where it's at and I'm not expecting a script until August. I don't know what the premise is or anything."

Tarantino Could Cut 40 Minutes from Inglourious Basterds

First Showing reports that The Weinstein Company is trying to cut 40 minutes from Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds.

Because TWC has been having financial issues and Inglourious Basterds had mixed reviews at Cannes, Weinstein and co-producer Universal are both trying to convince Tarantino to cut the film.

At the end of the festival, Tarantino himself started telling press that he would be going back into the editing room, potentially adding a new scene before the infamous bar scene in the middle of the movie.

Ben Kenigsberg at Time Out Chicago wrote a piece titled "Don't cut Inglourious Basterds, you basterds!" in retaliation of the cut. Here's an excerpt:

All I can say—as someone who thought Basterds was the unquestionable highlight of this year's Cannes competition—is that cutting won't remove what's strange about the film; it'll just ruin its pacing and structure—and probably outrage QT's sizable fanbase. The charge against the movie is that it's "talky" and that too much of it is subtitled to appeal to a mass audience. But if any contemporary filmmaker has proven that large swaths of dialogue can be compelling, even profitable, it's Tarantino.

Lane to Star in Secretariat

Variety reports that Diane Lane is set to star in Secretariat, the Disney film about the relationship between the 1973 Triple Crown-winning racehorse and his owner, Penny Chenery.

Lane will play Chenery, a mother and housewife who knew little about horse racing when she took over her ailing father's farm in Virginia.

While Secretariat showed potential before the horse became the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years, Chenery's rise to become "first lady of racing" was the real underdog story. Around the time that Secretariat established himself as a horse with serious potential, she was pressured to sell him and everything else after her father died and she was hit with a large inheritance tax.

Randall Wallace is directing the film this fall from a script by Mike Rich.

Meh, biopics usually bore me.

Theroux to Direct Chief Ron

First Showing says that actor/director Justin Theroux is set to direct his second feature, titled Chief Ron, for Universal.

Theroux, whose first directorial feature was Mandy Moore indie drama Dedication in 2007, is returning to the director's seat with Chief Ron, a comedy about a conman who claims he's Mohegan in an attempt to open a casino.

Chief Ron is actually inspired by the true story of Chief Ron Roberts. His blonde hair and blue eyes raised skepticism over his ancestral claims, but he prevailed in court and is now building a casino in upstate New York.

The screenplay was written by Jordan Roberts.

Hm, interesting.

Abrams and Cruise Team on Mission Impossible 4

Spoiler TV has scanned a section from the latest TV Guide that says that J.J. Abrams has returned as producer for Mission: Impossible 4.

In the article, Abrams says, "I am incredibly honored that Tom [Cruise] has invited me back as a producer on Mission Impossible 4...Tom and I have come up with a really cool idea we are pursuing."

Not much else was revealed, except that Cruise and Abrams are looking for a screenwriter and that it's uncertain whether Abrams will direct.

Sommers Fired from GI Joe The Rise of Cobra?

Latino Review has announced via it's message boards that G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra director Stephen Sommers has been fired from the project by a Paramount executive named Brad Weston. Read the story below:

After a test screening wherein the film tested the lowest score ever from an audience in the history of Paramount, the executive who pushed for the movie Brad Weston had Stephen Sommers, the super hack director of the film fired. Removed. Locked out of the editing room.

Stuart Baird, a renowned "fixer" editor was brought it to try to see if it could be made releasable. Meanwhile producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura whose turkey IMAGINE THAT explodes this weekend as the new bomb in theatres (also championed by Weston) was told his services were no longer needed on the film either.

Sommers was then forced by his William Morris agents to pretend that he was working on Tarzan over at Warner Brothers doing design work, even though that film doesn't even have a good script yet. When word of the firing started to be whispered about in Hollywood, Sommers was summoned back to the editing room - but only to save appearances, Baird is still editing the movie with studio input.

Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner, who turned down other offers from the property to go with the script that was rushed in 8 weeks by Stuart Beattie because of the writer's strike, is frantic that this will destroy the brand and is distancing himself from the pending catastrophe.

NONE of this needed to happen, except someone who did not know the mythology, Lorenzo was in charge of the film and never contradicted Sommers on anything. Lorenzo, so you know, was Chairman of Warners and had GI JOE under option there (not as a producer) for SEVEN years and he refused to greenlight the film, stating that because he grew up in Italy he had no knowledge of it. If you Google enough, at one point you will see he wanted the film to be about an action hero named MANN (Action Man, get it) and he clearly had no clue what the GI Joe world really was.

And the hapless hack Sommers? Where did he come from? The confused Jon Fogelman at William Morris, who signed Hasbro away from CAA, had to find a director in a hurry for his new clients and gave him the only guy who he repped who would do it. A sad end to what COULD have been a great franchise. Acceleration suits indeed.

So far, everything seems to be checking out, but no representatives have commented on the situation.

Haha wow.

Comic Series Deadworld to Be Adapted

Variety reports that Dark Hero Studios partners David Hayter and Benedict Carver have joined with Pandemonium's Bill Mechanic to turn the comic book Deadworld into a zombie feature franchise.

Hayter will write the screenplay adapted from Gary Reed's series, with production starting next year.

Deadworld veers from the popular zombie mythology of depicting an apocalypse in which humans are overrun by flesh-eating corpses by featuring Protag, the King Zombie who is a Harley-riding corpse that holds a grudge against the survivors who made him an outcast.

Hayter said, "It's very much about the design of the Deadworld and creating cool, frightening but not necessarily gory creatures. I am a huge fan of zombie mythology."

Could be good, could be.

Marcus Nispel to Direct Conan

Variety is reporting that Marcus Nispel will direct Conan.

Nispel will make Conan his third remake, after The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th.

Nispel said he will blend his childhood imaginings of the character with the influence of the famous Conan illustrations by Frank Frazetta, and the influence of such viscerally violent period films as Mel Gibson's Apocalypto.

Production on the remake is set to start late this year in Bulgaria and South Africa.

Hugo Weaving in for The Hobbit

Guillermo del Toro has confirmed that Hugo Weaving will reunite with Andy Serkis and Ian McKellen for The Hobbit.

Del Toro says the trio will return "...as the roles they originated in the trilogy." Weaving played Elrond in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

The first of the two films is scheduled to be released in December of 2011 followed by the second in December of 2012.

Poehler to Star in Lunch Lady

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Universal has picked up Lunch Lady, a children's graphic novel series written and illustrated by Jarrett Krosoczka, with Amy Poehler attached to star.

Sarah Haskins and Emily Halpern are writing the adaptation.

The Lunch Lady series centers on a mild-mannered school cafeteria server who secretly dishes out helpings of justice as she and her assistant investigate wrongdoings. The books also feature three kids who try to figure out her double life.

Marshall in Talks to Direct Predators

Bloody-Disgusting has learned that director Neil Marshall (Dog Soldiers, The Descent, Doomsday) is in talks to direct Robert Rodriguez's Predators.

Rodriguez previously said of his reboot, "We'd create new otherworldly characters while not taking away from the draw our main Predator has. I think another reason I called it Predators was to mark it as a project that should be taken seriously by a filmmaker to make a worthy follow up to a classic, much in the way [James] Cameron made Aliens a compelling work on its own, following Ridley Scott's Alien."

Jones to Play Frankenstein for Del Toro

SciFi Squad reports that in a recent interview with BBC, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has already cast Doug Jones as Frankenstein in his upcoming reboot.

Jones will begin testing things like make-up within the next few weeks, but Del Toro admits that he's "not in a hurry" and is perfectly fine shooting the film five or six years from now.

Del Toro says, "You have one shot in your lifetime at these things and I don't want to do it the wrong way."

Three Scribes for New Bond Film

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade, who have co-written the past four James Bond features, will be joined by Frost/Nixon scribe Peter Morgan on the latest installment of the franchise for MGM.

The three writers will collaborate on the screenplay for the 23rd Bond film, which will once again star Daniel Craig as Agent 007.

The triple hiring fits the pattern of the two most recent pictures, Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, which saw Purvis and Wade drafting the initial script and Oscar-winning Crash writer-director Paul Haggis coming on to augment it.

Friday the 13th on Ice?

Well, really snow but still. According to an interviews that STYD and Collider did with Platinum Dunes producers Andrew Form and Brad Fuller on the set of the new Nightmare on Elm Street reboot, the next time we see Jason Voorhees, he may be snow bound.

From Collider: "Listen, I think that for that movie we want to have a fun movie. If we're going to do another Friday the 13th, you know we were having a blast on the set; we want to have fun. We also want to bring things they haven't seen before and one of the things that they haven't seen before is Jason in the snow. They haven't seen that before."

From STYD: "If we're going to do another Friday the 13th we want to present something audiences haven't seen before and one of the things they haven't seen before is Jason in the snow. We just want to bring things they haven't seen before," although that does not mean, "the [entire] movie will not be set in the snow."

Fuller also went on to add that we could see improvements in Jason's kills saying, "If we were vulnerable in Friday the 13th, I think our vulnerability is people think our kills were not clever enough," he said. "So whatever we need to do to make our kills feel clever in our second film is what we're going to do. I think turning [Jason] into a space-going astronaut is the direction we're going to go in. But that's a criticism goes to my heart. I feel I failed the fans in that those kills were not original enough."

LAME and STUPID.

Nolan's Inception to Film in Canada

The Calgary Sun has released an article about Christopher Nolan's Inception, revealing the film's budget as well as shooting location.

The budget is said to be around $200 million - or closer to $176.5 million if that first amount is actually Canadian dollars - and that it will be filming in five different countries, although a "significant portion" of it will be shot in Kananaskis, outside of Calgary in Alberta, Canada.

According to the article, it says, "Nolan scouted nearby foothills and mountainous areas by helicopter and is said to have chosen Fortress Mountain as the main Alberta location."

Inception, which is set to start filming in November, will employ "hundreds, if not thousands, of local film workers starting this summer when construction on the elaborate set is due to begin."
