Sonic Generations : General Hacking Thread

I hope there's some Minigames connected to other characters in Sonic's universe.Like something that involves breaking and carrying stuff with Knuckles, bombs, airplanes and techy stuff with Tails, Treasure Hunting (if so, don't make it tedious like in SA2, SEGA T-T) with Rouge, and so on.

I really think Sonic Generations is going to be extremely active on the Downloadable Content part.

I'm sort of curious about Planet Wisp because (if Dusk's info is anything to go by) it seems like the levels are placed in chronological order, wich means PW is the final level...

I wonder if Sonic Team is doing some (heavy) modifications to the level to make it look more... er... Final-Level like.

(that or Time Eater has a level on it's own)

There is a level called Genesis...so that has to be the final level.

Another list image titled it "Sega Genesis" however, it's very possible it's just an emulator to play the old games, much like Splatterhouse and Super Smash Bros Brawl's vintage demos.

Or maybe it is the real Time Eater and you fight a fucking Sega Genesis, I dunno.

Noup, Genesis is for "Sega Genesis" (there is a file in this topic that shows that)

According to Polygon Jim @Retro the game will have it's own Sega Genesis emulator.

That would be... interesting?

Not sure if want, but it would be hilarious.

Not only that, but it seems like Sky sanctuary, originally one of the last zones in it's respective game, is the third stage, but I hope they don't make it too easy...

If I may stretch my imagination a bit and use references from the mission lists as well, plus try to think of things that made the stage memorable and would be spiced up...

Chemical Plant: When I think Chemical Plant, I think of the pipes, the water section, and the chemicals that would jump up for a second out of pipes that could hurt you. The chemicals were never played out very big in Sonic 2, however, so I could see them have an expanded roll in Generations. I would love to see the blue globs bounce around and be sprayed as obstacles. Flooding chambers you need to escape from, moving platforms and the fear of being crushed, as well as high-speed slopes. However, for the new mixed with old I really do think the biggest thing they could expand on is the Chemicals. So much potential, it even is in the name, but it was underused in the actual level. Be interesting to see it translated into 3D.

Sky Sanctuary: First thing that always comes to my mind is the garden-like structure of it all with the Death Egg in the background, Eggrobos, and the several fights with Mecha Sonic. Mecha Sonic was the core aspect of the original Sky Sanctuary, he would stop you multiple times to try and kill you, both with machines and his deadly rolling and such. I can see him being a prime core of additions in the new Generations version. I could almost see him being like the Nemesis (from Resident Evil) of this stage, a constant stalker who is trying to kill you, he is one of Sonic's scarier-looking foes when you think about it. I would love to see his antics of how to kill you in this day and age as that was one of his core features, kill! He even showed that he was willing to kill a partner in crime in his murderous rampage (killing Eggrobo just to get a shot at Knuckles). He also shows that he will do whatever it takes to win, even abusing the Master Emerald at this point and shooting enemy rings... Wait, I wonder if that attack Mecha Sonic does has anything to do with the mission in Sky Sanctuary about enemy rings?

Speed Highway: Judging off the enemy list, it seems they are really playing up the Police Car Monkey Robots, they now can scale walls and come endlessly from some creator of them. I expect there to also be a new Generations version of the downward building run as that was a key part of the original, wall climbing, and crazy twists.

Seaside Hill: I want extreme Sea Turtles. And thanks to the mission list, it sounds like I might get it. Actually, from the mission list it sounds like the Sea Turtles can fucking fly now. That's magical. It looks like they really also are playing off the water and palace elements of the stage, with more expansive temples and underwater sections now. Honestly, that sounds exciting to me and this may be the level I am looking forward to the most. Also, I feel sure those killer living boulders with faces and spikes will return. Those things were pure evil.

Crisis City: I am REALLY hoping that Iblis is in the stage. Screw the shit that he's dead, I don't care about continuity on this! I want a giant fucking fire monster causing the end of the world and magma spewing everywhere and tornadoes of pure fire rampaging the city and demons lurking in the landscape! Let's make it chaotic! Let's burn it all! Make Iblis stir shit up and destroy the landscape! Make him burn down and kill! Part of the whole point of Crisis City is that it's an apocalyptic end of the world scenario that is rampaged by Iblis, let's play it up! Let him free, let him destroy!

Rooftop Run: Well we see that we'll maybe get to explore the University (imagine Sonic speeding through a school) as well as the usual Rooftop Running, and from the mission list it sounds like Sonic might go skate boarding again in this stage. I would like to see a part as 2D Sonic where he scales the clock tower with none of that Werehog business. That could be like the scrapped level from Sonic 1 with all the clockwork stuff and be a lot of fun.

Planet Wisp: One of the missions mentions something about Trams. I don't exactly recall anything about Trams in the original Sonic Colors, so going to assume it's a new thing. Want to know what I really want? I want to be able to explore the alien landscape, as well as the depths of Robotnik's base there. Trams is a god step as that suggests we're going to be exploring deeper in Eggman's base set-up there as opposed to the construction site we visited in the game. I would love to see large alien vegetation in 3D or something like a giant dome built by Eggman with sprawling trams and networks of machinery. Also, GIANT BUZZSAWS! I never understood why the towers in Colors had giant buzzsaws, so give use to them. LET THE GIANT TOWERS WITH BUZZSAWS TRY TO MAUL YOU DEAD. YEAH!

For the record, I want to mention that I acknowledge that the game's level list could go with more 'variety' in regards to general level themes, but despite that, I feel like the current level list shouldn't be lambasted due to that. When I think of 'variety' I'm less thinking about level themes and more just thinking about looks and feels of levels in general. What different gameplay mechanics will be implemented, how much, how little. That sort of thing. That's where I draw the line on 'this level selection has no variety'.

Most people aren't going to argue against any of the stages selected in the sense that they're just 'bad' stages, I wouldn't think. A lot of these stages are some of my favorite stages in these respective games and I don't think I'm alone in my thinking. That's why I'm able to look past the lack of theme variety and just appreciate the fact that I'm getting the chance to play re-imagined versions of some of my absolute favorite stages in the history of the franchise. At the end of the day, it's still, quite literally, a nostalgia trip. A fucking epic nostalgia trip at that.

Anyone who has bothered to play these stages knows for a fact that they are quite different both in gameplay, look, and feel, which is why I feel like just saying things like Seaside Hill is 'just another Green Hill' or we have 'a bunch of city stages' is incredibly unfair. I can tell you for a fact that putting a snapshot of Sonic Generations' Green Hill next to Sonic Generations' Seaside Hill and asking a friend of mine that isn't into the series 'Does this stage on the right look like the stage on the left?' they'd say without a doubt that they don't.

When you say Speed Highway, City Escape, and Crisis City are 'just three city stages' you're really generalizing and undermining how great these three stages are just on their own. I'll admit that there are other stages that I would have loved to see other than these, but in the end it doesn't matter to me much because these are still great stages, and I'd probably immediately acknowledge that they're more popular than the stages that I would have potentially chosen over them. Speaking of alternate level lists. I'd like to propose my own 'ideal' level list that is filled primarily with alternate stages than the ones chosen here.

Sonic the Hedgehog - Green Hill

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - Mystic Cave

Sonic 3 and Knuckles - Sky Sanctuary

Sonic Adventure - Lost World (or Sky Deck)

Sonic Adventure 2 - Crazy Gadget

Sonic 06 - Kingdom Valley

Sonic Unleashed - Rooftop Run

Sonic Colors - Planet Wisp

Downloadable content - Ice Cap

There's some overlap but there's also a considerable amount of change. Why? Because in the case of the stages I replaced, I like other stages more, obviously. :P

Would some people here like this list? Probably. I know I personally love it to pieces. Would most people here love this list? No, of course not. In fact, I'd say that the list of stages actually chosen for the console version by Sega are actually better and more representative of the majority of the fanbase's wants than mine.

I've brought this up before, but it was already confirmed that the 3DS version would have a different stage selection. For one thing, Casino Night isn't going to be downloadable content on the 3DS. So there's always the possibility that Ice Cap is the Sonic 3 stage on the 3DS version. I know that isn't really saying much since some people may not want to get the 3DS version or have no interest in a 3DS, but you have to think of it this way. There's a chance Sega listened to the fans of Ice Cap, but they also listened to the fans of Sky Sanctuary. They theoretically chose both stages, but divvied them up between the console version and the 3DS version.

There is also downloadable content. We already have Casino Night Zone (which was confirmed to be in the 3DS version) coming to consoles in the form of downloadable content, so why not have Ice Cap be downloadable content as well? I honestly doubt this game will pull a Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing and we'll only get one DLC stage before support of the game is discontinued. And if you remember Sonic Unleashed had a shitload of downloadable content. It wasn't just fluff either. There were entirely new levels in those packs.

I don't know, I just think maybe the people complaining about the lack of theme variety need to hold their horses a bit and just wait for the stage selection in the 3DS version and future downloadable content announcements. I want to play a re-imagined Ice Cap too you know, just not as much as I want to play a re-imagined Sky Sanctuary.

"Sega Genesis"?

Maybe... just maybe... the Sega Genesis is the final boss, with it's final form being the "Time Eater"!

I think you're onto something here.

Modern Sonic could tell Classic Sonic to check out the boss console.

Basically, it's the final boss of Segagaga where you have to fight all the past Sega consoles, except you fight only the Genesis this time.

I'm thinking the emulator will work the same way as Egg shuttle! Got Red rings you unlock old acts to play.

So....is anyone actually looking foward to seeing any of these stages remade?

Abso-friggin'-lutely. Sky Sanctuary and Chemical Plant in HD? Sign me up. And how are they gonna pull off Crisis City or Seaside Hill? How will Classic Sonic tackle Planet Wisp or Rooftop Run? How are the level-specific gimmicks gonna work? Where in these levels can SEGA take my money?

I'm excited to see how they're gonna pull off the levels. Yes, even Speed Highway, because I wanna see how they'll handle it, and if the Generations' take will have more of its own identity. Again, this whole list has me really pumped; I just hope all this stuff WILL be in the final game. I mean, look at Sonic 2006 =/

I'm thinking the emulator will work the same way as Egg shuttle! Got Red rings you unlock old acts to play.

That's definitely a possibility. But there's another idea; what if there's 7 stages unlocked for the Genesis emulator, and there's a Chaos Emerald hidden in each one? Think of like the Sonic Colors Game Land, but pushing the Retro factor even further, making each stage look like a 16-bit stage?

Fuck you. Now I'm putting up high expectations for something I know would never happen, ever.

So the Sega Genesis is behind all the problems in Sonic's world?

Dang man, didn't know Iizuka preferred the term "Megadrive" that much. :v

Would be a good joke if a "Mega Drive" title card wasn't found in the demo files too. :P

In all honesty I hope everyone here gets what they want out of generations, everyone deserves the best for sonics 20th anniversary. Im just sick of hearing people getting so upset over small crap.

I hate to break this train of though, as I would love it if a killer Megadrive really was a boss, but in the demo files it is very precisely a SEGA Genesis emulator. XDD

Actually, from what it looks like from what I observed, I think what they're doing is making it so you can play all the original stages. From what I observed, the emulator had a "Select Stage" option, which leads me to believe maybe along with Generations remakes of these stages, they'll allow you to play the original Green Hill, Chemical Plant, Sky Sanctuary, Speed Highway, City Escape, Seaside Hill, Crisis City, Rooftop Run, and Planet Wisp. This is just a guess, but how the thing was structured was a bit interesting.

However, no matter what the case, it's definitely an emulator as opposed to a SEGA Genesis.

Can you please stop acting like a fanboy douche? K thanks

My opinion on the levels is this:

If they just put the stages in with little to no innovation, it will be a boring, repetitive, lackluster game. However, if they manage to innovate with new scenarios, events, and quirks for every level in the game, then we've got ourselves a hell of a nice game ahead of us.

I'd like to say that Rooftop Run has a very high chance at getting a new trailer during Summer of Sonic

I mean think about it

E3 took place in Los Angeles, and we got a City Escape trailer which was based on LA

Summer of Sonic will take place in London, and Rooftop Run was based on London

It makes complete sense

So true.

And about the 9 gig DVD disc, I'm guessing that's size of a Shitbox 360's disc, so it should just be exclusive to the PS3 so we could have more stuff since Blu-Ray has a larger storage capacity.

I'm well aware that each of these cities are different in color, time of day, location, and so forth, but at the end of the day, you're still running on roads and rooftops, amirite?
