VGA: G210 512MB (nVidia Geforce)

Ah, there we are, your graphics card is a budget piece of shit.

Turn down your graphics settings gradually until you get 60 FPS and enjoy. :D

Eh... Is that video card bigger or lower than a Geforce 6200 512 MB?

I am planning to buy another video card. Not a GT 500 Series and the likes, but something cheap and that works. Any suggestions?

This may sound very facepalm worthy, but how would I go about finding the specs for my computer?

There are some things on the side of the computer but my Dad added some things on to this computer so I'm not sure how accurate most of this is:

CPU: AMD Athlon II X2 (215 dual core precessor)

Memory: 4BG DDR2

HDD: 750GB

ODD: DVD-Super Multi (Drive)

VGA: G210 512MB (nVidia Geforce)

I know the last one is inaccurate as I have a different graphics card now. Also, I'm pretty stupid when it comes to specs for PCs. Like, I don't have any idea just what the hell most of that even does or enhances.

Actually, now that you mention this whole thing about the specs of your hardware, there's something that you can try if you'd like. My dad showed me this website because he knows how much I enjoy being able to play games and such. The website is http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri/ all you need to do is go to the website, search up "Team Fortress 2" in the list and then click "Can You Run It?" then the website will do a scan on your computer and compare the hardware you have to the hardware needed and will tell you if it passes the Minimum/Recommended and (If you wait for the advertisement to pass after you scan) it'll tell you in which aspects your computer doesn't pass in, if any.

OH GOD WHY

I WAS USING BETTER STUFF THAN THAT THING IN 2004

WHYYYYYYYY

The 210 shits all over that, to answer your question. Yours is Generation 6, the 210 is Generation 10.

Yeah you need a new one, and if you're still using that anything will be a phenomenal improvement like you wouldn't believe.

*looks up specs*

The current nVidia graphics card line is the 500 series, if people weren't aware. Every card line runs the gamut from top-end superweapons to bog-standard basics.

This is the absolute cheapest card in that line, even this would shatter both of your cards and grind them into fine paste.

This however is where the performance starts to match the price. Past this it gets too expensive for what you get in return.

These days I would recommend if you're buying a new graphics card at all to get a 560Ti as it's all you'll need for a long time, but that's assuming you can afford it. There's a giant gap in power between the 520 and 560Ti - the 560 is roughly five times as powerful despite being only three times the price.

If you literally can't afford the 560 and need something in-between the bog-standard assface performance of the 520 and the very respectable makes-1080p-its-bitch 560, confusingly this is your man.

And that's about all the help I can give before I have a heart attack over people still using those things.

I think my graphics card might be a tad better than that. It runs most other games pretty good but I can't find the box for the thing anywhere so I'm not sure. My computer says that my gaming graphics are a 5.6 out of 7.0, but my graphics card is a 4.9 so I don't know what the hell is up with that.

Cool, I'll check it out before I play TF2 next time. Thanks again guys. Hopefully I can finally play this game longer than 2 minutes in not too long. My Steam is RedCap_BlueSpikes if anyone was curios, but I probably won't be playing online for a little bit even when I do get it working smooth as I suck. And I don't have a gaming controller yet either.

Oh and I can't accept friend invites on Steam for some reason. Something about how I need a game in my game library even though TF2 CLEARLY is a game. Made by Valve, no less.

A word of caution: the GeForce 6200 had both PCI-E and AGP versions of it on the market at the same time - and the AGP version is still being sold, stocked and manufactured to this very day. If you are using the PCI-E version, then you can upgrade to any card that your power supply can handle, because unlike AGP, the PCI-E standard is current-gen and still supported on modern motherboards.

In other words, AGP is obsolete, and has been since to GeForce 8000 series back in 2006.

In other words, if you're running the AGP GeForce 6200, it's time for a new PC.

You could be right considering you said that it could run games like Mass Effect with ease, which I think needs stronger requirements than Team Fortress 2. It just seems odd for this one specific game to lag after such a short time when you have other games that you play which run with ease. Not really sure what it could be..

Sure thing, no problem. In the meantime, I might try looking into the problem a little bit more and see if I can find anything that might be of a bit more use. When you do the scan on the website, be sure to let us know if you pass or fail and, if you do fail, where exactly it all happens. You don't need a gaming controller. Truth is that I prefer controllers over keyboard and mouse, but it honestly works find with Team Fortress 2 and you barely notice it. Also, I added you as a friend before reading that last part. I could be wrong, but I think you need to buy or use a code to get at least one game that's worth money, not just get a free one. But, again, I could be wrong on that.

I'd thank you not to argue with a Games Tech student who went to the trouble of actually checking out your GPU specifications before dismissing your card. Not only is it one from the previous 200 series (admittedly a very good series), it's in fact the lowest-end card in that series and missing many of the notable features in the line. It is literally a budget piece of shit. It also happens to be part of a GPU line where even the shit entries are decent provided you don't crank up the complex operations in your game settings. Complex operations are shaders and real-time shadows. My old GeForce 7900 from yesteryear got absolutely slaughtered by even basic real-time shadows, and that was a very high-end card at the time.

So yes, a 200 series shouldn't struggle with TF2. However your ultra-budget card will choke very quickly on the more complex operations because it literally lacks the hardware to pull them off quickly enough. Try turning down shadows and shader detail first in your TF2 options and see if that improves your gameplay experience. It's the graphical frills causing your problems, not the basics, which even your 210 should indeed be able to make a good attempt of.

I'd also play in 720p if you can. (It'll be 1280x720 or 1280x800 in the resolution options.) 1080p will kill your card straight up. Playing in less than 720p these days is lul. (sorry BW XD)

EDIT:

You need to purchase a game. TF2 doesn't count because it's F2P. Yes they need to make that more clear - my sister had the same problem.

Oh, sorry, I didn't mean to offend. I just meant that I believe my graphics card is actually different, I believe you on this particular one that came with it isn't very good but my Dad pretty much rebuilt this CPU. But I can't be sure if it IS better/different or not considering I can't check to see. Once again, sorry.

As far as the graphical options go, I already have pretty much everything turned off. I also play in windowed mode so would that be a problem?

I might try looking into the problem a little bit more and see if I can find anything that might be of a bit more use. When you do the scan on the website, be sure to let us know if you pass or fail and, if you do fail, where exactly it all happens. I'll let you guys know whether it passes or not. Part of the reason why I sucks is because of the controls. I can never get used to

keyboard control for games that aren't 2D because even when I edit them they're very clunky.

Also, I added you as a friend before reading that last part. I could be wrong, but I think you need to buy or use a code to get at least one game that's worth money, not just get a free one. But, again, I could be wrong on that.

Yeah, I just did a quick little search and I do have to buy something off Steam. That is incredibly retarded, and just about the dumbest friend system I've ever seen..

I keep forgetting I'm talking to teens who aren't responsible for what's in their machines. Sorry about that - I was already dictating the required contents of my PC hardware to my parents at 14 to prevent them being ripped off so I can't really relate. ^^;

So you don't know what's in there? Hold on then, I'll spoiler-tag it. This works for everyone.

CPUID is a company that produces hardware diagnostic tools. They're free and professionally thorough, so we'll use these.

Download the English CPU-Z installer, install and run the program.

It will scan your PC and collect information on your hardware and then provide you a full output of what exactly is actually in your system with regards to your CPU, motherboard, GPU and RAM. You'll also notice that the information updates constantly, because it's actually tracking your hardware's sensors. biggrin.gif

Studying that information might prove a useful exercise if you can handle it, but the relevant information is the following:

CPU > Name

Memory > Size

Memory > DRAM Frequency

Graphics > Name

Then we'll have a better idea of your PC's raw gaming guts.

Also on that same site is PC Wizard - if you want details on everything in your PC, that's what you want. happy.gif

Its cool. Actually this computer was previously my Dads and was specially ordered from a site so I didn't have any say so on what went into it whatsoever.

Anyways, it's saying everything is the same. I could have sworn the graphics card was updated. Not sure if you care though but it's saying my memory size is 4096MBs. Not sure if that changes anything though.

4GB is fine for a basic PC.

Turn down your graphics settings. TF2 is an old game, but they've been gradually adding more intensive graphics options over time to give the newer cards something to do. :P

Eh. I have AGP on my PC. Don't know if I have PCI ._.

I KEEP telling my dad that he should buy a new PC (It's his PC), but he keeps saying "If you want to use it, buy it with your own money"

I'm like "Fuck you dad"

Oh, this reminds me, you could try using a lower level of DirectX on the game, add -dxlevel 81 to the startup args.

@Voice: That won't make a difference; the GeForce 6200 supports DirectX 9.0c, and the GT 210 does DX10 - using an older version of DirectX tends not to do all that much so long as the graphical effects are set down low enough.

@Blue Wisp: I bet all of your hard drives are IDE, too, and you're running on Windows XP and working with DDR1 RAM - yeah, my dad's is like that, too.

And if you have an AGP port, you won't have a PCI-E port at a fast enough bandwidth for you to run a graphics card through it - there's no choice but to either upgrade, or invest in buying used high-end AGP GeForce 6000/7000 card.

But believe me when I say that buying used parts for outdated standards is a whole different ball game...

I'm not complaining. My PC runs just fine, with 3 GB of RAM. Team Fortress 2 runs just fine without lag - Except some certain servers. I am just complaining with the fact that I COULD play some games that are cross-platform with the HD Brothers, but I can't because my video card is crap.

And the fact that the PC somehow crashes at least 40% of the time. I don't understand why.
