  • SEGA Europe Hit with 240 Layoffs, Relic Entertainment Sold to Become Independent

Creative Assembly and HARDLight impacted by layoffs.

Still reeling from the cancellation of Hyenas, and lower-than-expected Total War sales, SEGA Europe has announced yet further layoffs, and the selling of Company of Heroes developer Relic Entertainment, per notice on SEGA Sammy's Investor Relations. This follows SEGA's investigation into "structural reforms" announced in February's Investor Report.

These layoffs will affect 240 positions in SEGA Europe, on top of last September's 250 layoffs, and as reported by GamesIndustry.biz, will impact Creative Assembly, developers of the Total War series, and SEGA HARDLight, best known for their Sonic mobile titles including the recent Sonic Dream Team. GamesIndustry.biz also highlights that the Relic sale sets it to become an independent studio.

We extend our sympathies to those impacted by these layoffs.

Depressing, especially considering all of the other layoffs happening in the industry lately.

I'm hoping that by going indie Relic can salvage their reputation after the disasters that were Dawn of War 3 and Company of Heroes 3. Sounds like they're gonna continue working on CoH3 in spite of splitting off from Sega.
