  • Surge the Tenrec Will Debut in Sonic Prime Dash Tomorrow

Surprise announcement for the Netflix-exclusive endless runner.

The Tenrec's out of the bag! IDW Sonic comic character Surge will be making a video game debut tomorrow, where she will be added to the roster of runners in SEGA HARDlight and Netflix Games' Sonic Prime Dash.

Players who open up the app - which is an alternative Sonic Prime-themed version of long-running action game Sonic Dash, available exclusively for Netflix subscribers - will be treated to the above notification. Surge will also eventually appear on the standard version of Sonic Dash, which is currently running a Reaper Metal Sonic and Vampire Shadow event for the next six days.

The news follows rumours that Surge was going to appear as a playable character in SEGA HARDlight's other runner, Sonic Forces Speed Battle, after images of the character were found in the game's code. So it's a surprise that she's not only heading to Sonic Dash first instead, but a variation of Sonic Dash at that.

If Sonic can refer to Tangle in Frontiers, then Surge can turn up in Dash I suppose.

This is a version of the game  that game that gave us Andronic, hello kitty and angry birds to play as, so a sonic idw character makes total sense.

Its still not a "mainline" game apperance or reference, but still cool

The reasoning isn't just for a product placement deal, like with Hello Kitty, IDW (along with Prime for some reason) have been made full on canon to game's continuity. Which is how Tangle got that mention in Frontiers. The Sticks that is also mentioned in that game is not the one from the Boomverse but is her main universe counterpart first seen in Sonic Channel, where she got a bio and one Sonic Comic dedicated to her. This is due Takashi Iizuka wanting to create a "Unified Sonic Experience".  (Though Sticks was earlier and was more due to Japan really liking her)

With that being said, it seems the mobile games are being used as a testing grounds of sorts, as Tangle made a mobile game appearance before her reference in Frontiers.
