  • First Sonic Dream Team Content Update Adds Time Trials, Boss Missions and More

    Arrives later today!

SEGA HARDlight's latest platformer, Sonic Dream Team, will receive its first content update today, adding several speedrun-focused gameplay features to the Apple Arcade exclusive.

Key among the new changes is a 'Speed Battle' mode, where players can now record their best times for each Act and compete for top place in online leaderboards.

The DLC also comes with eight new Boss Missions to mix things up, along with moveset overhauls for Dr. Crabulous, the Factory Foremen and the Guardian Hunter which will hopefully keep things fresh on replays.

In a press release sent to Sonic Stadium, SEGA confirms that this is the first of three content updates planned for Sonic Dream Team throughout 2024, which makes us wonder if more significant expansions are on the way (in a similar cadence to Sonic Frontiers last year).

If they extend the main game somehow then I might resub to Apple Arcade for that. For right now I'm just planning to play it out to the end of the month then let it go for the time being.

Nice touch that they’re doing but not enough for me to get back into playing it. Already beat the story and collected all the blue coins and red rings. I can live without a few new movesets and time trial mode, though I’ve never been a big fan of time trials anyways.

Accidentally forgot to cancel my subscription so I guess I'll be looking at this later.

Would love to play this but I don't have an Apple device. Patiently waiting for a port.

I'm currently playing Dream Team... I'm impressed that this is a mobile game, it's a lot better than other types we got, but I'm kinda underwhelmed by it as a whole.

I think most of the hype of it is simply due to the fact that it's a functional, simple and very polished Sonic game, which is something we lack in other major titles, but it's really boring, maybe too simple (due to its mobile nature, although I do enjoy mobile games too, generally). Also part of it is due to people not being able to play it with the Apple Arcade exclusivity, but to be honest, you guys are not missing much, once you finish it, it's not even worth paying for the subscription just for the updates.

I have not finished it yet, I'm halway through it, going quite slow, part of it is I have 3 free months to play it, but at the same time it hasn't hooked me to finish it, things I like:

+ More playable characters, half of them are skins but I don't mind, the animations are unique for each character, and it makes sense for the cast they picked to have the same moves. The fact that it uses Rouge and Cream is also + bonus points for me

+ Dreamy worlds and level design, it's open but still traditionally linear as most people had mentioned previously, it's a great concept that justifies the design

+ Replayability, especially compared to, say, Superstars, we got collectables, statues in the gallery, missions and time trials. None of this is in Superstars, and I have no reason to go back to it, which makes the game very short.

    Things I don't like:

    - Voice acting, for both Cream and Rouge, sounds very forced and annoying, I'll be honest, but to be fair both actresses are underused so maybe they haven't practised as their roles. But still, worth the note as positive that Cream and Rouge are major characters

    - Level design is nothing special, which kinda sums up the whole game, it's okay, simple, but nothing exciting.

    - Nothing crazy with the collectables or unlockables either, I guess they'd have to have more character models for that, but I wish they included more characters in the gallery.

    - Bosses are too easy. Although they are fixing that with the updates.

    - It's still a very short game since there are only 4 zones as of the time of this post.

Overall it seems an okay game just not worth anyone's hype. I get it that it's more well thought and polished which for some people is something that makes it more valuable than recent console Sonic games, but for me... not really when the core concept and design are not anything special, to me it can't be really compared, it's unfair for Dream Team since it's a simple mobile game.

I'm also having trouble with controls, but that's because I'm playing on the macbook keyboard, which may affect my experience.

Have you tried playing with a controller? I think most macbooks do have some controller compatibility. I use it to play Dream Team and GTA on m iPad.

Not yet but I absolutely need to try at this point.
