  • Trailer For "Project Shadow" Fan Film Short Released, Blows Away Internet

Don't want to wait a year to see Shadow in a live action film? You might not have to.

The Sonic community is filled with some truly talented people. From fan games and hacks to comics and cartoons (including a SatAM revival), the Sonic community regularly pumps out loads of impressive projects. Live action films have generally been the exception, due to Sonic being a cartoon hedgehog and all. At least...until now. This past Saturday, Brazilian CG animator and aspiring filmmaker João Filipe Santiago released a trailer for his upcoming fan short film, "Project Shadow." This short retells Shadow's origin story, from his creation to the tragic death of Maria, all while utilizing Shadow's teased design from Sonic 2.

The effects in this trailer are very impressive, especially for a fan film. It's pretty clear a lot of time and effort went into this. The trailer has been released in two languages: its original Brazilian Portuguese and an international English dub.    You can check out both below:

The trailer also confirms Mike Pollock's involvement. According to Santiago, this will be in the form of a brief cameo. The music in the trailer is also a totally original song, which will be released in the near future. Finally, these trailers aren't everything! You can find some other brief teases on Santiago's Youtube, and you can check out Project Shadow's movie poster below:

Project Shadow will release on December 16.

This thing looks awesome. Easily best looking live-action Sonic fan project, maybe even comparable to the movie. The look, the tone, the music.

And it's coming out in less than week? Life is good.

Worst I can say is that Maria (clothing) and Gerald (mustache) look a biiiit more like cosplayers than movie adaptations. Faithful, even when perhaps slightly more realistic design would work better. But it's minor problem. (Also I hope final movie won't have irremovable subtitles. Portugal no less)

I'm beyond excited for this, and I hope that all the creators of the film are taking care of themselves. Projects like these can be extremely stressful, especially when there's not a huge amount of people working on them. It will be available on Youtube, right?

I’m deadass when I say that I only watched 3 seconds of it.

An indie film like this has no right to look this good!

And there is no excuse for any bigger studios to fall short of it.

Awesome fan video! And reminds me how they better not screw up Sonic Movie 3.

Looking forward to watching the entire short in 5 days! :somad:

Looks interesting. This reminded me of another Sonic fan film by Eddie LeBron exactly 10 years ago (wow, time flies!)

I remember the hype the fan film had then. 10 years ago, it was cool and fun to watch. 10 years later...eh well. 😝

WOW CAN'T WAIT!!!!! I've been waiting for this film for too long, and it's almost here!!! I think I'll cry at some moments, Shadow's history's always been so touching, and now as a movie... It's incredible.

Oh, I remember this movie! I remember watching it a few years back and being blown away by it, and I have no doubt that Project Shadow will multiply that tenfold. I've been looking for this lately but I could never remember what it was called. Thanks for posting the video.

I really wait patiently, he looks incredible and I think he has talent and a lot of love for what he is doing very successfully in everything he sets out to do and nothing more I can say, just enjoy

This was great. I do have some issues, but considering this is a fan project, I feel bad to even mention them

You know, I really-really wish this was a whole movie because events on the ARK could easily fill out an hour or two, maybe more if to include stuff like Emerl, Artificial Chaos or Biolizard. But with 30 minutes we don't even get to know Maria or Gerald. This story only focuses on Shadow (which of course was the right move, I'm just saying there is plenty more to tell).

For starters, visuals have no right to be this great. it's not as good as Paramount speed-wise, but I think they knew it and focused on slower beautifully detailed shoots, which frankly might be better in some way. I think my favorite effect is when Angry Shadow starts glowing red. It's similar to the Movie Sonic, yet very much his.

The music is just fantastic. It perfectly catches the melancholic feel of upcoming tragedy. Reminds me of "Chosen One".

The characterization of Shadow is interesting. He comes off a bit wimpier than I expected, but it works. It creates a stark contrast with angry Shadow and makes you feel for him every time things get screwy (I would never guess first Chaos Control would be so... traumatic). Also, I love the image of him sleeping in Maria's lap. With that said, I would lower the silliness. His high-speed hi-jinks are too much Movie Sonic. I'll take any emotion from Shadow these days, but turning him into Sonic is missing the point.

On the topic of silliness, it's great Mike Pollock got a cameo and the whole commercial is a cute way to show Gerald has a bit of Eggman silliness in him ("didn't expect that" works as well). I'm not sure what this scene adds though, Shadow could just have them from the start. I suppose it's a bonding scene of happy Shadow to space out somber moments.

My biggest complaint: GUN. They are a lame plot device. They are angry with Gerald. But instead of sending someone to talk to him, they just attack? And why are they even angry? We see Shadow developing new powers, including Chaos Spears. Exactly what they should wanted. And the way they call Shadow a "freak" or "monster" just feels like a hate-able bad guy 101. They wouldn't even be a threat if Shadow didn't put his rings today, which is very convenient for the plot.
And before you point to SA2, the game very intentionally left a lot of questions open. We never knew for sure why GUN attacks, it's not the same when we witness those events firsthand. Even worse, Shadow 05 gave a perfect excuse: GUN could learn about Black Doom (probably from child GUN commander). That would be a perfect way to go about it. Gerald never betrayed Earth but didn't trust GUN enough to tell them about his plans, so everybody lost. A perfect modern Greek tragedy.

I'll give GUN this: they created a scene where Shadow holds a gun with an angry scowl and I was able to take it completely seriously. I didn't even think about it on the first watch and that's quite amazing.

My next complaint, some science is just hockey. "Hey, Shadow can stop time. Let's do tests... to see if he can shoot lasers". Or the "regular and super hedgehog" talk, which is treated like rocket science discussion. The origin of his name is also a bit forced. I know there is no logical explanation for his name, but there is one that always tugs my heartstrings.

Lastly, I'm slightly torn on the climax. Most of it is perfect. The shaken GUN soldier, hesitant to shoot the child (one of the better additions of Sonic X version). Broken Shadow with time freeze after Maria's death. It's just... wouldn't it make more sense if Maria gave her speech after getting shot? IDK, maybe it would be impossible to pace. But I think that was always the implication and that is what made Maria's wish so powerful: that even after "humanity" decided to kill her, she still wished Shadow to spare them. Worked in the Bible, would work here. Having that tearful conversation before she knew what will happen to her kinda muddles the message. (And of course, Gerald's insanity is a bit rushed. Like I said, if only it was a full movie).

Right, those are all my grapes. This is still 9/10 for me and I pray that someone important in Sega will watch it. It's so good to be reminded why Shadow used to be the best.

Well I believe it was shown that GUN was shown thinking that shadow should be used as a weapon and they realised that Gerald wouldn’t allow for shadow to be used as what they wanted him to be and wanted him more focused for combat than trying to use him to cure diseases
