General Nintendo sales/business discussion topic (previously: The Wii U Thread)

Such things could actually affect Nintendo's stock (as stupid as that sounds), with it being released well before shareholders were aware of the changes, line up, and other such things. Due to that, Nintendo has every right to take him to court despite it seeming stupid.

According to twitter:

Dev at Traveller's Tales who leaked updated WiiU controller (now with sticks!) already fired and may be taken to court. Respect NDA's folks.

What a complete idiot for releasing that image. It wouldn't have killed him to wait a month and let it be officially shown off, but instead he had to blab and for that he lost his livelihood. Idiot.

I know, but court? Over a leak that would eventually be public info anyways?

I just don't get it.

NDA's are serious business. You don't fuck around with them. Look at all the discussion and derision that Nintendo got in this thread when we weren't even sure if this was an earlier design that they moved away from or a newer design.

Now multiply that by the entire internet.

...Why would he have to go to court over it? That sounds like they're overdoing it.

As others said here, he broke the contract. Now Nintendo could send Travellers Tales to court if they want to.

Also what's important is trust. Nintendo's trust with Travellers Tales could be broken here. It would especially be if Travellers Tales took no action against the guy.

So the specs of the Wii U may have been revealed by Ubisoft. It will run Direct X 11, Unreal 4 Engine, Radeon HD 6770 chipset, The console has 2GB RAM, 560MB dedicated to the OS.

Not sure what that means, but I guess you guys can understand.

Oh, and Ubisoft says the price will be $350.

I expected a high price. The Wii U is going to have to really be impressive at E3 and promise a really good launch lineup to justify that price to consumers.

Source?

And why the hell do people mention DirectX in the specs these days? DirectX is Microsoft-only.

Rumors. I can almost guarantee that Wii U will not support DirectX. DirectX, as what Masaru said is Microsoft-only. They own the APIs.

Nintendo probably took the whole redesigning for comfort thing when they introduced the CPP. Not entirely the same thing but, it provided a grooved back to the 3DS and a shape that fits better in the hands (shame it isn't used in much of anything).

That GIF image doesn't take into account that the whole unit now looks slightly wider. Additionally, it looks like they have added grips on the underside, too. That is of course assuming that all of that is part of the final design. If it is though, it'll be more ergonomic, which is always a plus.

Interesting fact - Since 2004, Nintendo have been working with Google to create a new Operating System, which isn't Android.

Considering it's been said in rumors that the OS is much bigger than any OS we've seen in consoles to date, I have a feeling this might be a part of it.

Wii U Darksiders 2 graphics "at least as good" as PS3, Xbox 360 versions'

The graphics of the Wii U version of Darksiders 2 are "at least as good" as the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions', developer Vigil has said.

Game companies and developers are under strict orders not to discuss the Wii U in detail publicly, a directive that has led to speculation about the horsepower of Nintendo's Wi successor. Indeed one report from earlier this year claimed the Wii U was "not as capable" as the PS3 and Xbox 360.

But with final developer kits now with engineers, and Nintendo just two weeks away from unveiling the final version of the hardware at E3, Vigil has insisted Wii U owners will see visual parity when it comes to multiplatform games.

"The visuals will be the same," associate producer Jay Fitzloff told Eurogamer. "It's still a work in progress. But I know, at least as good is the way to say it."

In July last Vigil told Eurogamer it spent just five weeks in the run up to E3 2011 creating a working version of the action adventure game on Wii U. Then, Vigil said the Wii U had "plenty of horsepower", "so we're not going to have to make any visual concessions at all".

At that time developers were working off of second generation Wii U dev kits - early versions of the console - and its horsepower was in flux. Then, game director Marvin Donald said, "If the Wii U turns out to be this ridiculously powerful machine, we will probably make changes to our budget and scope to take advantage of that." This hasn't happened.

"[Getting Darksiders 2 working on Wii U] is not as challenging as you might think," Fitzloff said. "Getting it working was not any issue on the Wii U. It's just the control scheme. It's new territory. It's a new frontier. The Wii, after a while, there's a lot you could have done with the Wii controls, but everybody kind of got into a groove, and it became, here's how you handle this or here's how you handle this. Now it's the wild frontier. There's no set system. You've got to think outside the box because there's no precedent.

"It's not getting the game working on the system. It's getting a cool control system that feels correct. And that's where we're at now."

Vigil was even able to quickly get Darksiders 2 running with the Wii U controller, which can stream gameplay from the console.

"When we first got it up and running, you can have the game download to and run on the pad, and everybody was like, that could take a while, little worried," Fitzloff explained. "It took a programmer two lines of code and five minutes. Working with it is not difficult."

Darksiders 2 will use the Wii U controller in obvious ways - for inventory and map use - but the impact of these "no brainers" on gameplay is, according to Fitzloff, huge.

"Any game would have their inventory on the controller screen," he said. "But even that little simple thing is a big difference because you never have to stop the game on the main screen. That will change people's perceptions because you've never had a game where you didn't have to.

"They take you out [of the experience], whereas this just goes."

He added: "And you're talking about the low hanging fruit. You're talking about the easy stuff. The rest of it is where the challenge comes in. What do we do beyond that that makes it feel natural and integral?"

One developer working on Wii U, who wished to remain anonymous, told Eurogamer Wii U ports will at best look as good as PS3 and Xbox 360 games. However, he indicated gamers will only see its true graphics capabilities with games built from the ground up for Wii U later in its life cycle.

For its part, Nintendo has said its focus with the Wii U is gameplay, not graphics. "We do not focus on technology specs," Nintendo said in March of this year. "We understand that people like to dissect graphics and processing power, but the experience of playing will always be more important than raw numbers."

Honestly, I'd be surprised to not see a few games that don't already look like current-gen games on the WiiU. This was basically the case early on in the 360's life too, where you had stuff like Dead Rising that still more or less resembled a late Xbox title once you got past the actor count and motion blurs.

That said, if it's anywhere near as strong and easy to port to as they say it is, I'd imagine a fairly consistent 60fps framerate on the WiiU version isn't too much to ask.

Gearbox: “More modern tech” allows Wii U Colonial Marines to be better visually

Asked why the Wii U version will be better with the machine all but confirmed to only run at a slight power boost over the current generation, Burleson cited “more modern tech” in Nintendo’s new console. He wouldn’t be drawn on how exactly it would be the best version when EG questioned him further.

“You’ll have to wait and see,” Burleson offered. “Just trust me on that one.”

While the Wii U tablet controler is confirmed to perform like the iconic Aliens motion tracker in-game, other as-yet unannounced features are on the table for the unique controller.

“You can imagine some cool features, for sure,” Burleson said. “It’s not hard to imagine some cool features.” SEGA PR prevented him from elaborating further.

We’ll know more at E3. Colonial Marines is due out on February 12th 2013.

Things are certainly heating up now.

Nintendo Wii U Gets Official Facebook Page, Updated Logo

May 26th, 2012 at 9:34 am by Tynan Muddle

Nintendo have launched a brand new Facebook page for it’s upcoming high definition console, Wii U. The page will keep fans updated throughout E3 and beyond.

Within an hour of going live, Nintendo amassed over 54,000 fans to the page. A few hours on and the page is at a staggering 70,000 likes. Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime posted a video thanking fans and inviting them to watch the excitement that will unfold at E3 this year.

Those with a keen eye will also notice that Wii U’s logo has had a slight change in colour, if the official Facebook page’s avatar is anything to go by. The new logo sports the “U” styling in a slightly darker, more bluish colour than it’s unveil last year. This is also the first official, public use of the logo since it’s debut in 2011.

New new console sports 1080p resolution, “deep” online connectivity and a 6.2inch touchscreen controller that allows gamers to play games without the need for a television.

The console will be on display at E3 which kicks off in June. Head to our E3 Coverage Portal at e3.aussie-gamer.com for all the latest!

Can't wait for casuals to mistake the Wii-u for the Wii just like many people still do with the DS/3DS.

Great name Nintendo!

To be fair, the DS series hat the DS, the DS lite, the DSi and the DSi XL, while the Wii series just had one Wii with different colors (and one without gamecube support, but it still had the same name), so I don't think people will mistake it that easily.

Thing is, the ds lite, xl, dsi, all that could play DS games. They were all basically the same system. The 3DS is not the same however, it is the sucessor to the DS. Yet you still get questioms like "Can the DS play 3DS games?" Or "Why won't this 3DS game fit into the DS?" I'm sure there have been parents who think the 3DS is the same as the dsi, so they get the dsi for their child instead. The name confuses people, many people have stated it was a stupid name because of these very reasons.

But Nintendo must not have learned there lesson. I mean for pete's sake they even remodled the Wii to look like the Wii-U. What company models their console to look just like the next god damn console.

The video should have ended with a: "My body is ready. Is yours?"

Please! Don't shoot yet! D:

Great name Nintendo!

Wasn't the Game Boy/Color and Advance also a bit confusing for the casuals?
