Sonic Generations 3DS-bound?!

Hero of Legend

Recommended Posts

The console versions of Generations will feature a large cast of characters, but the N3DS version will only have the ones integral to the story.

...Seriously?

This is all that needs to be said.

After Sonic 4, a bit of my respect for Dimps faded away.

Really? Only a bit?

They could still change you know, after receiving feedback from Episode 1. ST also only began to make Classic style gameplay, after feedback.

Where's the confirmation for Launch Base? Right now it's looking like Launch Base's boss is in Green Hill, which means no appearance of the zone itself.

Well the boss area looks nothing like the rest of the GHZ shots.

--

Anyway, Iizuka just said that Sonic meets his past self... Can we confirm younger Sonic now? Please?

Also, Dimps haters?

Read, they physics have been rebuilt from scratch this time. It's not a simple port of the Rush engine.

That would be most strange, especially considering the battle is taking place on a platform hanging from the Death Egg. But yeah, it might just be a boss stage and nothing else, like Mazuri in Unleashed Wii. That'd be kind of cool if it means we get Ice Cap on one version and Hydrocity on another. :D

Yeaaah, I think I'm gonna wait for actual shots inside the level before I go proclaiming LBZ is a confirmed level XD

On the other hand, this is tempting me to get a 3DS. Dammit SEGA, STOP MAKING ME BUY NEW PLATFORMS AND ADD ONS! Wasn't it enough that I bought the Kinect?!

You do realize that this still isn't reassuring right?

Dimps has been doing progressively worse and worse ever since Advance 3 came out and they haven't been necessarily showing signs of improving. I'll take their word of accepting feedback once I actually see it, but for now all I can get from them is a backlog of things that were definitely not up to standards.

Plus it makes more sense to be pessimistic because that means I can be pleasantly surprised if they churn out something good.

I'd say that was their worst. :/

Hahaha! It's pics of the LBZ Boss, int he same arena. I think it's a safe bet that LBZ is a confirmed stage, be it just for a boss battle or otherwise.

Like I said, for me, it's much more complicated than that. I'll be waiting for a bit more, even if it's only a word of god type deal.

Sonic Rush was Sonic Advance 2 done right and Sonic Rush Adventure was Sonic Rush done right. It was Sonic 4 Episode 1 where they shat themselves and reused an engine that did not suit classic Sonic gameplay at all. At least here they're making a new engine from scratch. Only time will tell if it's better or worse.

Really need to try out that game one of these days. Anyway I agree that the Dimps games have been declining in quality, but when it comes to boss battles they know their shit (most times). To this day the Big Swell boss continues to be one of my favorites.

For the record, the Generations version is different to the S4 version.

Sonic Generations: "♪ Anything you can do, I can do better. I can do anything better than you. ♪"

Sonic 4 Episode 1: "No you can't!"

Sonic Generations: "Yes I can!"

Good to see some details at last.

The screens worry me a little, I honestly hope it's just a low-poly alpha preview they've got there. The 3DS can do amazing stuff SEGA, and Monkey Ball was good proof that you know that already so step it up a bit ta <3

Casino Night and Launch Base (potentially) are nice levels to have - but I'll hold a candle for the other green levels, might of been nice to see Angel Island, Mushroom Hill or even Emerald Hill. Though I guess the series started with GHZ in both console and handheld

I want to hope that Special Stages are not JUST the Heroes one, though I suppose the whole half-pipe thing is common, maybe we can hope it's Heroes in graphic design only?

Otherwise good to see it finally confirmed with pics. Also Izuka confirms Sonic 4: Episode 2 is still in development

Well, I guess I don't mind having a Sonic Rush 4, though I really would've prefered something more like the console version. But after this I don't think I can take anymore momentumless 2D Modern Sonic.

Comparing screenshots cause I love a good ol' comparison:

HD3DCompare1.png

The 3DS version looks much more like a straight up remake of the original design wise. None of those new flowers, stone totem poles and green hills in the background. Kind of disappointing when you consider all the extra detail that's gone into the HD version. The 3DS of course can pull off anything like that, but it's still lame that the updated design has been ignored.

HD3DCompare2.png

This screen really shows the need for more things to be going on in the background, and shows the less favourable checker design. The larger, soft coloured and less uniform squares look nicer. GHZ3DS basically looks like Splash Hill without the awful 2D bushes.

Is it confirmed Dimps is doing both Classic and Modern? I hope to high heaven they aren't being allowed anywhere near the Classic shiz.

Pretty pleased with this though, at least it gives me an explainable reason for buying a HD and 3DS version. :P

@Blueblood.

I was thinking the same thing, but then I realised, that despite the 3DS being much more powerful than the DS, the framerate would suffer considerably from all the crap it has to render.

Man, those graphics are pretty bad, at least for what the 3DS can handle. That's my only gripe though; I like the simple, straight-up remake for Classic Sonic's levels in comparison to the more complex HD version, and I like how the entire handheld version of the game is in 2D, offering one simple, platforming style and another complex, more fast-paced version of essentially the same game, and I like the exclusive content, all that's fine, but... my gosh, after just seeing some footage of Resident Evil Revelations, or playing Street Fighter 3DS at Gamestop... it just looks so lazy in terms of sheer graphical power! It obviously can't support the hedgehog engine, nor was I even expecting Wii-quality graphics, but it seriously looks exactly like something that could be on the original DS.

Maybe it's just me though.... meh, whatev. Still looks fun though, and in the end, that's what truly matters. I'm also curious how special stages factor into the experience, and if they will appear in the HD version, in the same style perhaps? I still hold by my theory that both Sonics will have special stages, with Classic Sonic's being something akin to the 2D rotating map, while Modern Sonic has something similar to the Sonic Heroes style special stages.

I'm also curious as to what the 2-player will be like... is it co-op? Competitive racing? Can one player really be Classic Sonic while the other is Modern? Is it exclusive to the 3DS?

Holy crap  E3 couldn't come any faster...

In my opinion, Sega should attempt at a Wii port of the 3DS version. So far it makes extremely minimal use of the bottom screen, and obviously the 3D is not vital. And at the moment there aren't any shading effects that the Wii can't do. Just a glossy look. Shame on Sega/Dimps, the 3DS can do HD-quality shading (Capcom knows this, look at RE: Revelations).

Something like how PSP games were being ported to the PS2. I think it can work. Just charge the Wii version at $30-$40.

Everything sounds great, even the exclusive stages for each version, as that means more incentive to play the HD and portable games. Imagine how great the combined soundtrack will be! We're looking at perhaps 20+ remixed tunes!

The only downside to the 3DS version, which is to be expected and is in no way a criticism, is that the modern stages will be a downgrade from their originals. No way will the Adventure or Unleashed stages look better on the 3DS. I'm actually looking forward to the 2D versions of those game stages in that regard.
