Sonic Generations 3DS-bound?!

Sounds and looks goods to me! :D

Those looking for unique stages will be pleased, and it just generally seems to offer a different experience from the console versions. As an absolute Sonic Colours nut, I'm a tad disappointed that there will be no 3D sections for Modern Sonic on 3DS, but it's not a huge deal and it's good to see them mixing it up a bit with Sonic Rush-style approach. It's the best of 2D Sonic all round!

All I need now is to see this in action. Like, right now. Hint hint, SEGA! :P (pretty please with a cherry on top)

In summary - hurrah! We Nintendo-only gamers finally have a reason to get excited about Sonic's 20th anniversary! Woop woop!

So Tetsu Katano is making this?

Mixed feelings. He was one of the guys of was "sick" of making Sonic Games and being pressured by Sammy, as shown in declining quality. He was excellent programmer on Advanture 1(at the time) and 2,and made the A-Life Program in Nights, but things started to go downhill when programming flaws started in Heroes. He also made Secret Rings, and I recall him saying that he was purely forced to make Black Knight for Money, and thus didn't care about it all while making it. Maybe he will find new motivation for this.

I don't think they meant GHZ is the only shared stage, I think they meant so far SEGA has only revealed two stages to NP: GHZ and CNZ. GHZ is in all versions, Casino Night is exclusive to 3DS (which I'm cool with, as we've seen it in Heroes, SASASR and Sonic 4).

EDIT: noticed Iizuka said they divvied them up between versions, nevermind. Though I could imagine there might be a few more duplicates.

He's confirmed Launch Base and Casino Night for the 3DS version.

I literally shouted yes when I read that. I kid you not

Oh wow, according to the article, GHZ is the ONLY stage the two versions have in common. That's awesome.

I'm pretty okay with this since we've already gotten two classic stages out of the way, which should place some hope for a good mixed bag from all Sonic games.

I do wonder whether it rules out the Casino trope entirely since I wouldn't mind seeing Bingo Highway HD-fied.

So C.Sonic gameplay is like the classics and M.Sonic plays like the Sonic Rush/Sonic Colors DS games? I'd knew they was going to do that, the game is going to have two different types of gameplay styles in 2D. :\

Sort of disappointed at the lack of 3D, but I guess it could be good, though it'll make the modern stages seem like the Classic ones, just with boost/walljump/stomp. And considering Dimps is making it, I'm going to wait to see this in motion before getting excited at all.

It also looks kinda crap graphically, but the 3DS has a weird thing where half of screens for its games looked jagged and pixel-y but looks nothing like that on a 3DS. Maybe it's from taking shots while in 3D mode, I dunno.

Oh, wonderful. Glad to see they got the right man for this special anniversary game.

Seriously, this is starting to look like the work of "old SEGA". Where is "new SEGA"? You know, the SEGA from 2010, that seemed to change its ways? Well, except for that loud, monstrous fart we call "Sonic 4: Episode I", which we can forgive (kind of).

No, the 'old SEGA' from 2005 to 2009 would've done a whole lot worse. I'm actually happy with the scans (they're not as good as the HD versions, though) but I really need to see some gameplay for the 3DS version.

Classic Eggman <3

Ignorant question time:

I haven't been paying attention to the 3DS so I have to ask, is this game making full use of the graphical power of the portable console (I remember people saying it was more powerfull than the Wii)? Because looking at the screens, it doesn't look that timpressive.

I will give more opinions once the screens finish loading (really slow internet, also, I'm loading a bunch of stuff from youtube at the same time)

3D mode seems to make screenshots, that you can take in game, look more jagged. Which is surprising because games actually look sharper in 3D mode.

Anyway, to answer gato's question: I'd have to say this isn't using the 3DS to the best of its ability. It doesn't even look as good as Ocarina of Time 3D, and that's just a retailoring rather than completely changing the game's graphics design. If Super Street Fighter IV and Dead or Alive are any indication, SEGA could do much better.

I haven't gotten around to Colors DS, and I feel like that one's required to make an assessment of this. From what I understand Colors DS was like the Advance 3 of the Rush series, a bastard child of mixed styles. Will this game also be a clusterfuck of Dimps styles? Don't mean to be negative but...

Sonic 4 = Rush engine.

Colors DS = Rush 3.

Sonic Generations with both styles is like Rush to the power of Rush in 2.5D, so what does this even mean? To the defense of Dimps, I've found the Rush games have the most original bosses since the damn Genesis days and much kudos to them on that. That Big Arms fight looks freakin' amazing.

It's specified that the game is co-developed by Dimps and Sonic Team. Sonic Team are probably handling the Classic stuff while Dimps are doing the modern.

The Iizuka interview confirms there will be less characters in the 3DS version, just the ones integral to the story. He also says it's being co-developed by Sonic Team and Dimps. I'm glad to hear that the 3DS will have exclusive stages, but I can imagine how people with the 3DS only will be disappointed.

So Launch Base is confirmed for the 3DS version, which frees up an S3 slot for the console version since we have confirmation that the versions will have different levels. That means there's now at least a 20% chance of Hydrocity appearing on the console version versus the roughly 17% chance it had before, not counting how Ice Cap's hair-pull-worthy popularity might affect the basic math. Penth is slightly happier, and probably really stupid for hinging all of her nostalgia-based needs on a water level. xP

I think DIMPS will do both. Why shozld ST be the only one to have Classic Physics?

Launch Base is confirmed as a boss stage. There's a chance some stages may only be represented by a boss fight, ala Mazuri in Unleashed Wii.

Awesome, now I'm going to end up buying two versions of the same game again just like I did with Sonic Colors. XD

Anyway, Casino Night Zone being in the 3DS version is really bittersweet for me. CNZ is my favorite level from the Genesis games, and I'm really happy and excited that it made it into the 3DS version of Generations. But on the other hand, I'm kind of bummed that it definitely won't be in the console versions now. But ah well, I'm still happy that it got included at all, and hopefully that means they'll choose another awesome zone from Sonic 2 for the console versions like Chemical Plant or Mystic Cave.

Also, I really like Launch Base Zone's music, so I'm curious to see how the remakes for that will sound.

This is all that needs to be said.

After Sonic 4, a bit of my respect for Dimps faded away.

And now I'm saddened, because this will always be the Launch Base music to me:

Same can be said for

and Carnival Night. Edited by Blue Blood

Very, very cool. I kinda like how this handheld version is consistent with the previous handheld titles, and it's a unique take on things. For the 3DS version, BOTH styles are fully 2D, and this could make Modern and Classic Sonic feel a lot more familiar to each other, with the former gameplay's style being a lot more complex and the latter's being more simplistic, with no other big differences beyond that.

The unique levels and differences to the console version make it sound like the Generations equivalent to Sonic Colors' DS port, but that's not all bad; the new content could be very cool, and some of the exclusive levels could be well-known levels that made appearances in Nintendo Sonic games (such as Night Palace, Planet Wisp, or Terminal Velocity), but didn't make the final cut for the HD version. Plus, while I can guess that Classic Sonic's levels will be identical in layout to the HD version's, Modern Sonic is gonna have unique level layouts for the system, so of course, we're gonna have to empty our wallets coins rings to get the full experience, which I got no problem with, so long as the game truly takes advantage of the 3DS, because so far, my only gripe is that those graphics ain't all that pretty.

Also, confirmation that Classic Sonic will fight some bosses while Modern Sonic will fight others. My guess is still that Classic Sonic will fight the bosses we're familiar with in the Classic era, while Modern Sonic fights new foes. Green Hill Zone, for example; Classic Sonic squares off against Robotnik (or Classic Eggman) in his Egg Ball machine (or whatever the hell it's called), just like the very first showdown between the 2, while maybe Modern Sonic has to take on that big metal fish we saw? Likewise, perhaps Modern Sonic will take on familiar foes in the newer levels while Classic Sonic could face new machines built by Robotnik, based on the motifs of the modern levels? The possibilities are endless.

I'd bet a whole bunch of money on Chemical Plant being the choice from Sonic 2 for HD consoles now that Casino Night is on 3DS. Also I wasn't aware Launch Base was so popular...I mean I liked it, but it doesn't hold a candle to Angel Island, Hydrocity, or Ice Cap. *shrugs*. I really hope Hydrocity gets in from S3, so that Ice Cap can be used from Adventure (honestly remaking either verson in HD, I doubt we could tell the difference.)

Still, this is very exciting! I only wish they would have said which zone from S&K made it into the 3DS version so I can stop being paranoid about Lava Reef not making it in.

Imagine Starlight Carnival in 3DS.

OH GOD SEIZURES AWWW YEA

I've seen Starlight Carnival on 3DS already :P At least this game will be prettier than the Rushes and Colours DS. It's a shame that GHZ looks very close to the original version on 3DS. I like the soft brown and larger checkers in the console version.

Hmm,if Tetsu Katano is the director of this version then maybe it will be better then other Dimps titles,we'll see.Oh and YAY for my favorite Sega composer Jun Senoue being the one doing the music :D

Where's the confirmation for Launch Base? Right now it's looking like Launch Base's boss is in Green Hill, which means no appearance of the zone itself.
