PSA: This topic is now exclusively for the general discussion of Sonic Origins.

Any new information or announcements surrounding this game (new patches, substantial comments from developers etc) need to be made in a new, separate topic.

With Sonic 3, you could just have the unused/prototype Surfboard intro be used if you don't have the Chaos Emeralds, using that as an excuse for a lack of Super Sonic.

Or...just use the existing intro where you lose the Emeralds.

There's no reason for this.

But then Sonic would just arbitrarily have the emeralds the player didn't collect in Sonic 2.

Would be so cool if you were to get the Surfboard intro in 3K due to not getting all emeralds in S2. When Sonic arrives in AI Knuckles could appear already holding the emeralds and taunting Sonic before running away.

I think the Surfboard intro should have been used in Sonic Mania.

I wonder if during Story Mode they will auto force you to collect the emeralds (or even not). Continuity between Sonic 1 and 2 doesn't really matter since they whizz off and vanish at the end anyway, but they could always go down the route of a no emerald run in Sonic 1 and then push you into special stages during Sonic 2 to ensure you get them for Sonic 3's opening.

Either that... or it begs the question of them entertaining scripting 8 different entrance scenarios for Sonic in Sonic 3 depending on the amount of emeralds he has.

Assuming the new animated cutscenes don't replace the sprite-based opening of 3K I think they might use the scrapped surfboard intro for when you don't have all 7 emeralds at the end of Sonic 2. If you do, the intro plays as normal.

Stuff like this is exactly why I'm definitely starting with story mode first. It'll be nice to save the new version of 3K till last to see all the surprises there but also to see how they've handled the issues of stringing these games together.

These aren't trophies. They're participation awards. "Watch the intro cutscene" for each game makes up four separate trophies? Are you kidding me? Lol.

Anyway, I'm curious - what are everyone's plans for playing this game when you get your hands on it? I'm assuming that a lot of people are going to drive head-first into Story Mode, playing each of the games back-to-back. Personally though, I'm going to start with a Mirror Mode run of 3K as Knuckles. Knuckles has always been my favourite character and 3K my favourite game, so it'll be a nice way to get to play the game in a fresh way. And on top of that, I really want to hear the music for Ice Cap, Carnival Night and Launch Base first-hand rather than through rips. After that, I'll move on to Story Mode.

I'm not sure when I'll get Origins since I'm still balking at the price tag/denuvo, but when I do I'm sure I'll jump straight into story mode like the normie that I am.

I'm planning on doing one run through story mode and the missions. I might not play any of the games in anniversary mode, it depends on whether I feel like replaying S3K with Knuckles or not. I still don't think Origins will be my preferred way of playing these games, but I'm interested in seeing what's changed in S3K and how the collection holds up in general. I'm buying it on Switch so that I have the benefit of portability since even if I got it on PC it'd be collecting digital dust when I'd rather play the fanmade ports on my computer. At least with having it on the Switch I'll occasionally get in the mood for playing handheld versions of these games like how I still play the mobile and 3DS versions of the Sonic games from time to time.

I think aside from playing S3K, the main thing I'm most interested and excited for in Origins is playing all those missions since I enjoy when brand new challenges are added to old games, sort of like the recent Mega Man collections.

I assume the "watch the intro" is just a weird way of saying "reach this game in story mode" because, barring CD, I don't think the new cut-scenes show up when playing the games individually.  Regardless, every time an achievement list gets dropped for a new game it takes me by surprise actually - I keep forgetting they're a thing that exist and would always rather have tasks for the player integrated into the game itself.  In that sense I don't really care that the majority of the achievements here seem to be things that just come naturally by 100%ing the game.

As for first gameplay plans - annoyingly I'm working most of the day it comes out and I'd really like to play Story Mode from start to finish uninterrupted if I can for the novelty of it, so I might unorthodoxly start with Mission Mode and enjoying the gallery a bit, and then play Story Mode the next day on my day off.

Playing through (and live-streaming) all 4 games in Story Mode on Thursday morning. Then exactly the same with Anniversary Mode (playing with either Knuckles or Tails) on Thursday evening... Will use the pre-order bonus 100 coins to unlock as much content in the Museum as I can before I start Story Mode. Then probably Classic mode on Fri & Mirror Mode on Sat. Will do some of the Missions each day as well.

I'll be getting home from work around 10:30pm, so considering I'll be having dinner etc I thought what the hell, I'll stay up till 12am and be among the first to stream it. Comes out 12am on the 23rd here in NZ according to the unlock timer on our local PSN so that's what, roughly 8am on the 22nd EST for America, roughly 1pm on the 22nd for the UK. Aussie is 3 hours behind us usually so we will be one of the first countries to get our hands on it.

My plan is to do a full Story Mode run, check out the additions and changes as I go, see the new cutscenes and potential transitions as well as hear the new music for 3K. I've played these games to death over the years so I can't see a full all emeralds run on each taking too long.

Will likely use some coins in the museum see what the premium content looks like, personally hoping the ads etc from Jam made it into the movie premium section. Then catch some shut eye until I have to take the kids to school in the morning.

Live off a couple hours sleep Thursday :P

Been wondering about this for a while, glad to see that I probably won't have to wait until midnight EST (US) on the 23rd to play it (just have to change location on my Xbox to NZ morning of the 22nd lol)

Provided I'm able to do that, I have the entire day off so I'll head off to play story mode right away like the basic bitch I am lmao. Gonna try to hold myself off from going straight to S3 and blitzing through it to hear the new music. Once I'm done with story mode, I'll probably end up trying mission mode or doing a Knuckles S3 run. I'm just really excited to dig into these games and this collection, man. Haven't played the Taxman/Stealth ports in years (and even then, not a whole lot), so a lot of the changes will still be pretty fresh to me, even in the non S3 stuff.

I wonder if you have to actually buy it on the NZ store for it to unlock at that time/date tho? Never tried changing territories after a purchase before. It's the equivalent to roughly $47 US if you buy it with NZD ATM. Cause its $73 NZD.

Meanwhile Brazil and some other territories are complaining about the price and ours is more expensive than theirs when you currency convert.

No, it should work regardless of which store you buy it from; it worked that way the last time when I did it with Elden Ring. Just gotta change the Xbox location to NZ and it should boot up fine (and then change it back once it unlocks here). Might be different in this specific scenario, but ideally not since I work all day on the 23rd.

I'm looking over the Japanese YT stream of the game for details on the cutscenes before release, and while I am disappointed that there doesn't seem to be any room for more cutscenes than the intro and outro for each game, I'm pleasantly surprised by the fact that CD has doubled up in cutscenes. Definitely makes the approach a little more palatable than if they only relied on CD's original opening and ending.

Though, I haven't seen anyone mention this yet:

It appears that the videos menu has a "golden" tab in the same way the art gallery menu will have. For the art gallery, the section was for "previously unseen artwork" and concept art, so I wonder what could be in the golden tab here? Ads from the 90s? Lost content?

Imagine if they put the OVA there in the golden tab. Highly unlikely but it'd be the first rerelease since the original release wouldn't it?

Realistically, it might just be storyboard/WIP clips of the various intros (similar to how mega collection had the WIP of the heroes opening intro)

Oh boy.

How would people even hear the new music? This is a digital game that's a few days away at that, it's not like it can break street date like a physical game could.

IceCap is nearly identical to the original prototype. Launch Base is still good, not really a problem with that. Carnival Night sounds really bizarre, though.

And for some reason the Competition Menu music is ripped from the prototype and the New Blue Spheres mode uses the unused track, also ripped directly from the prototype.

Just heard them and yeah they really really suck

Part of me was hoping they'd find some kind of loophole and have the iconic tracks in with slight differences but man. If these were the original prototypes then I can see why they ditched them for the stuff MJ's team worked on.

Guess I'll just stick to AIR if I ever feel like playing S3&K again, or wait for modders to do their sorcery.

Just as a reminder music/leak discussions are best kept to the spoiler topic

Sonic CDs OST isn't in the Origins options menu, but rather the CD option. The NA is also the default one so if you want to change it before playing Story Mode, enter any option of CD (Anniversary or Classic), go to Soundtrack on the title screen, change to JP, then quit out of CD
