Sonic Lost World @ Gamescom

I don't really know what you're trying to argue here....

Lost World could have chosen an American desert rather than an Egyptian one, and thus looks like the classics?

btw mario ripped off sonic 3 for real totes

look at those square bricks and statues and pyramids and gradient skies. Man they took that right from Sonic 3.

I don't really know what you're trying to argue here....

The whole point I was trying to make about the desert comparisons was that a desert didn't need to have all of the traits I mentioned that Sandopolis and Desert Ruins shared when I was comparing them to be a desert when Discoid argued that the traits I compared between Sandopolis and Desert Ruins listed were commonplace with deserts.

The entire overarching argument in all of this was me disagreeing with Blitz on the previous page back when he claimed that Lost World had no similarities whatsoever with the Genesis games in terms of visuals/aesthetics because Lost World's artstyle is considerably different from the Genesis games.

I'm going to assume from your post that I was steering the topic into off-course territory, so I may just leave it here.

@Discoid Not sure where you're going with the Mario comparisons, because I don't recall bringing Mario up at all in any of my recent posts.

So... are there any more gameplay videos from Gamescom that haven't been posted here yet?

I have no idea what you guys are talking about.

So here is the Japanese gamescom trailer.

If it's old... Pyramids... sand... or... something.

His point was that the connection you are trying to make between Sandopolis and Desert Ruins is tenuous and that by that logic you could say that Mario's desert levels drew from Sonic 3.

Looking at the screenshots you posted, Desert Ruins doesn't share much with Sandopolis beyond its trope and the colour yellow, the latter of which is often used for cartoony sand. The background colours would at least have to match for there to be a strong connection, if granular texture and browns are to be absent. I haven't seen any sand falls or slides either, unless I missed a video.

Huh.

So I just noticed that Underwater Eel Badnik is also part Submarine. It's got a little periscope on top of his head, and I guess those blue things are meant to be like Portholes.

Again I'd like to say that a desert doesn't need to have/share all of those traits I mentioned, which I previously said were stereotypical or commonplace. It would be like saying any of the three real-life desert locales I listed on the past page were drawn from Sonic and Knuckles or were identical to Desert Hill only because they are desert locations.

Even if Desert Ruins doesn't share much with Sandopolis (in which I'll even admit in retrospect, it wasn't a particularly strong example to use), there are still other levels from SLoW that I argue(d) share strong(er) visual/aesthetic connections between the two Genesis games. Windy Hill and and the casino level from Frozen Factory readily come to mind, I even brought up those two levels and compared them with Green Hill and Casino Night respectively in response to Blitz's post prior to making/attempting to make connections between Sandopolis and Desert Ruins.

I'm only now realizing that there's particles emitting from Sonic when he's moving. Grass pops out of his trails and the harder or faster he hits the ground, the more is visible around him.

Don't think that kind of attention to detail has ever been in a Sonic game before. It's far more dynamic than it was in the Unleashed-era games.

Dat next gen.

Makes me very curious what they'll do with whatever the Unleashed team is working on - what with particle physics and DirectX11 features being commonplace now, I'm really excited to see if they play around with that.

Do we know that they've remained separate?  I was under the impression the teams merged at some point.

FUCKING HELL ARE YOU SERIOUS?

I sure hope not~ ♥

I mean, they have to have some people working on a not Wii U exclusive game, right? Surely the Unleashed team is making a new game right now that doesn't take the franchise in a radical new direction that I really don't like and reminds me way too much of Mario? Right? Right? ... (⊙ u⊙)

There is an interview with Iz where he said that the teams have merged for the new Generation (Ps4/X1 I presume and it makes sense since they are going to need some extra help). The guy who directed Sonic Colors is directing this game and began it production with the Colors Team.

The project that involves both merged teams probably hasn't even started yet as they are waiting for Colors Team to finish up.

If the Unleashed Team still works independently in some way more than likely they are already taking ideas from Lost World....Sonic Generations took a lot of cues from Colors level design and structure so the next game that they make will more than likely be similarish to Lost World anyway.

I. . . I don't know.  But it might not be a good idea to get your hopes up for another unleashed styled game.  Hey though, stranger things have happened.

Sonic has changed artstyles like every 3 years since forever, I don't know why everyone is suddenly assuming this is it he's never changing again ever.

reminds me way too much of Mario

is there something inherently wrong with looking anything like Mario

it's not like any other games do it anymore whereas many other games out there have similar styles to one another all the time

Maybe they're still waiting on Lost World to see how it performs, and if people will be warmed up to the parkour system and make it Sonic's actual gameplay style from this point on? It'd be awkward of them to push forward with anything at this moment, considering they've tossed away the Unleashed gameplay and Iizuka isn't sure if this new parkour gameplay will stay.

It's not like they're going to make another gameplay style behind Lost World's back, even as a back-up plan, right?

I don't want a new Unleashed style game, I just want one that isn't like Lost World. That's the most blunt, truthful way of putting it.

I just saw that level with the snowball. You roll around and stuff?

Looks like Mario to me. Someone can come in and prove me wrong. Sure. Great. Go ahead. But the problem is, that won't change my vision. It looks like Mario. The level design (floating passages in the sky), the gimmick, the slowed down pace, etc. remind me f Mario.

I like Sonic. I don't like Mario. I don't buy Mario games, and I don't want Sonic to become something I don't like.

Personal problem? Yeah. Sucks to be me. I hope they go back to what made me like Sonic in the first place, because this new Mario-sequence direction doesn't do it for me.

I wouldn't be surprised if they don't even bother jumping on the PS4/Xbone just yet just because Sonic wasn't making good sales on their predecessors for the last generation or so to begin with.

Looks way more like Super Monkey Ball or Billy Hatcher to me idk.

You're not a Mario fan so if you don't pay particular attention to the series I'm not sure why you think Mario games have always been floating platform in the sky-athons, that's only been the recent 3D games since 2007 and they've all been critically acclaimed.

Monkey Ball and Billy Hatcher came.. way before those. And there was no floaty sky stuff dominating Mario games before that and especially no ball-rolling, that's all Galaxy (which is very much post-Monkey Ball)

Idk looks like Monkey Ball to me. SEGA all over.

EDIT:

Now you know how I feel, I don't like realistic games and yet almost all the industry has given up on making cartoony ones apart from once in a blue moon (or sticking to Nintendo). Sucks to be me.

But ya can't have 'em all.

they could at least make sonic run faster. i probably wont even take my finger off of the run button because walking looks so unbearably slow

At least they're not taking long-running franchises you've loved your whole life and turning it into something you dislike right in front of you. ... Unless you're a huge Bomberman fanatic, in which case I'm very sorry, and I understand completely.

Forgive me, I'm still extremely salty.

Anyway, that particular level immediately brought this up in my head.

If they keep going in this direction, I guess it'd just be safe to say Sonic isn't for me anymore.
