Gotta love how Luigi and Toad flinch when Peach is struggling to go down the pipe...but Mario is frozen like a statue, like he was too busy staring at something to react...

I love how Luigi retains a semblance of his Luigi's Mansion and Mario & Luigi persona, while still not coming off as a coward. He visibly flinches when Bowser stares right at him, sure, but he doesn't shake in his boots. And although he is the last to go down the pipe, he doesn't mull over it for more than two seconds, and he gives himself a smack to his face as if telling himself to buckle down and focus, and dives headlong into the danger. That's the Luigi I like to see.

I'm also loving the 2D art. I loved it with 3D Land, and I'm loving it here. Please keep the callbacks to late 80s/early 90s art for years to come, Nintendo.

Wow. While the story is still simple and sweet I love how much character there is in this one cutscene already! I especially like Luigi's personality cos it's quite close to how he's depicted in Luigi's Mansion and M&L. =D

Yeah, the little touches to everyone in that cutscene gushed with character despite no spoken word. Luigi was definitely the best, though. Bit cowardly, but still dedicated.

That intro was great.

 

Seeing the Mario Bros. actually working together to fix a pipe, while such a small aspect of that scene, really is a nice touch for this longtime Mario fan. It's nice to get that occasional "Hey, they're plumbers!" reminder.

 

The 2D art looks gorgeous, as it did in 3D Land. Really reminds me of the promotional art from the 80s and 90s, and I look forward to seeing more throughout the game!

 

Razor Wind already covered this, but I also really liked the subtle differences in characterization between the four. Mario is fairly no-nonsense as usual, Luigi and Toad are both shaken but not altogether cowardly, and Peach actually takes the initiative to go after Bowser first (not unlike the Super Mario Adventures comic in that respect). Bowser himself is great too; He's clearly menacing, but still with a subtle flair for the comical as he barely squeezes through the warp pipe to taunt his foes.

 

Man, seeing Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Peach all adventuring together gives me major nostalgia for SMB2 and (my guilty pleasure, I know) the Super Mario Bros. Super Show. Loving it so far, and I'm eagerly awaiting the game's release!

REALLY can't wait for this. I think what I liked the best about that cutscene was the shit-eating grin Bowser gives the heroes after he captures the fairy.

It's a SMB2 reference for sure, but it would also be a bit redundant to play as Red Toad in the normal levels since you play as the Toad Brigade Captain (who's also red--possibly the same "character" as the usual Red Toad?) in those little puzzle level things.

The NES color pallette made this a thing...if it wasn't for that...this would definitley not be the reason.
