Maybe the Zones are somehow being displaced from where they're supposed to be in Lost Hex? I mean, in the original teaser image, it looked almost like Lost Hex was broken, with a bunch of missing hexagons and such.

This sounds like an awesome idea, and something for a sort of plot twist device, imagine having a lava world called, Chilly Peak or something like a water level called "Dry Lands" or something, maybe the Deadly Six have fucked up Lost Hex and as Sonic defeats each one, it'll re-order Lost Hex into it's former world?

Assuming I'm right (and I'm probably not :v), it'd also be cool if the areas the displaced zones were ending up affected them in some way. Like, maybe you'll see some icy floors here and there in the Carnival Zone since it apparently ended up in the ice world?

Positive preview from D-Toid nice.  I'm very keen to hear the music of this level.  I love the music of Casino Night, Casino Paradise and Casinopolis.  Also what caught my eye was the last main paragraph:

The last bit of this stage had me dying a couple of times. Those wall lasers I told you about earlier came out in a big way in the last stretch, doing a sort of Tron thing, beaming out from everywhere in front of me to hinder Sonic's progress. A bell bounced around between multiple laser paths, beckoning you to follow it and ring it along the way. This required some tight platforming jumps to bounce into path clearings to follow it. I made it through after a couple of tries. After this, one final dodge through a fleet of huge rolling slot reels had me finishing the stage.

Nice to hear there's some challenge in the game.

Ugghh. Guys, you're looking too far into the zone names. Seriously. The zones are general themes, not absolute themes. Desert Ruins is not the name of the stage, it's the name of the entire zone. Desert Ruins is the name of the zone that Zomom is in charge of. The area Zomom is in charge of is mostly desert, and just happens to have a giant floating strip of liquorice in it as well. Zeena's area is named Frozen Factory, and just happens to have a casino in it. They're called Desrt Ruins because Desert Ruin is the name of the zone they are in.

I hope so, because when a critic actually plays a section in a Sonic game and says it's hard...it really isn't when I play it.

ERR-UHH

Wrong.

According to the San Diego Comic con coverage from Aaron Webber with Gamespot, they are intentionally named this way because it's a play on words, Desert Ruins literally becomes Dessert Ruins upon starting the act, It's all part of SEGA being fun and creative and also a little cheeky ;3

I haven't watched the footage because I don't want to spoil too much... but on the topic of upcoming trailers...

...could we hear the actual theme song? I'm really curious to see what it is. I can forgive Generations' jingle because of the way the game was, but eliminating actual theme tunes is unacceptable!

Eh, Its a little more than that.

Webber went on note in a Comic-Con interview stating that the title cards get tweaked a bit to make them little nods to the the stage's content. Desert Ruins cheekily edits itself into Dessert Ruins for example.

Now we just need to figure out how many letters we need to rearrange to cleverly change Frozen Factory into something Casio related. lol.

To be fair, with this new gameplay we'll probably be on the same level as the critics at first, since it's fairly new to everyone. I'm sure even the person who wrote up the preview would be blasting through that difficult section if they played the game (and that stage) enough. Not to mention skill level at playing any given game will vary from player to player.

Or you could go the cynical route and say "all game critics these days suck at games!!!!"

And that Sonic render to the left; I thought that would be from Lost World.

Also I can't quite make out that TV screen, but it does look something like a hub world.

I don't get it why there is still some people complaining about the art style of this game, seriously, this is just a different style, it's like complaining about how Zelda Wind Waker looks.

Oh by the way, I wonder how the multiplayer of this game will work, will they bring back the robot sonic recolors from that Game Land thingy from Sonic Colors? Who knows?

I really hope they don't stick with this art style. Poor Sonic looks so strange in it...

Really? I think it fits perfectly with Sonic, even more than it did on Unleashed

... Sonic looks no different than how appeared in the "Boost Trilogy."

The cartoony, yet detailed look of Unleashed just seems to fit him better IMO. Looking at screenshots of this, it seems like Sonic has stumbled into a Mario game. Of course, this isn't a surprise, considering that the game is a partnership with Nintendo. It's just that graphics that push the capabilities of the console have always been a hallmark of Sonic games, even back in the Genesis era.

I didn't mean Sonic. I was talking about how he looks so strange in the atmosphere around him.

Sonic itself is cartoony and colorful.

The cartoony art style was simplified to allow the game to run at a smooth 60fps, something that current home consoles can't pull off with the 'Unleashed' art style. Also, it takes cues from the classic Sonic games; mostly Sonic 1, 2 and CD. I even get a SEGA Saturn Era vibe from the game, and not just because it's similar to Sonic X-treme. Especially Windy Hill and Frozen Factory's Casino stage. You're free to dislike it, but there were reasons behind the drastic change in art style other than just it being part of a partnership deal with Nintendo. It'll take some getting used to for some folks, but I personally love the new cartoon-y art style for the most part. I just hope they can add some more details and visual effects to it when they eventually make Sonic games for PS4, Xbox One and PC, assuming that art style is here to stay.

They should at least stick to the art style of Generations, as that captured early levels in beautiful, modernised detail.

When I said, "Unleashed art style", I meant Colors and Generations too. All those beautiful details slow the game down; literally. Unleashed and Generations were both forced to run at an inconsistent 30fps and suffered lag due to having to load all those little details. One of the main reasons Lost World's simplified art style was created was to avoid this and allow for a smooth 60fps; because otherwise it would have to run at an unstable 30fps, which isn't good for the gameplay side of things. No one likes lag. Current home consoles (360, PS3, and Wii U) aren't powerful enough to handle Unleashed-Generations era graphics without bogging the game down with lag, so maybe there's hope for future titles on PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Still, I have to wonder how they didn't solve this problem in the five years they've had the engine. They were close in Generations but now have just seemed to of given up. Also, remember that the Wii U is a tad bit more powerful than the 360/PS3. I just can't think of a strong reason why they couldn't of produced something that at least went beyond Generations. I'm all for cartoons and still think SLW is good for what it is, but the whole planetoid approach just seems unnecessarily simplistic. Especially with those dessert and desert levels. This technique wasn't the best route they could of taken.
