  • Sonic Mania Plus Finally Arrives on Mobile Via Netflix Games

Sonic Mania Plus can finally be played on mobile devices

Earlier today, Sonic Mania Plus finally made its debut on mobile devices via Netflix Games. Initially revealed last year, this has been a long time in coming, and marks the latest development in SEGA and Netflix's partnership. Anyone with a Netflix account and access to a compatible mobile device can now download and play on both iOS and Android. This port was developed by Lab42, a subsidiary of Sumo Group.

You can check out some official screenshots below:

I decided to take some time to play the game ahead of writing this. How is it? Well, it seems fine, if barebones. I'll admit, I don't always have the best eye for frame rate, especially on a smaller screen. If you've played previous Classic Sonic mobile ports, you should know what to expect, though there is a caveat: you cannot adjust the size or position of the touch controls. To give you an idea of how it looks on different devices, here are the touch controls on an iPhone 14 Pro:

And here they are on an iPad Air 2019 model, which has a 4:3 aspect ratio:

The only part of the touch controls you can adjust is switching between right handed and left handed:

If you'd like to see the game in motion, I recorded the first 17 minutes (again, off of an iPhone 14 Pro). You can check it out on our Youtube below:

Yeah I'd much rather just drop the $7 once for the game than pay a monthly $7 subscription for a service I'll never use.

I want to buy Sonic Mania with money, not rent it.

It seems to have some noticeable lag regularly whilst playing on a Galaxy S21 Ultra, but it's not horrible. I just can't figure out what's causing it. It's a perfectly fine port, I guess. The fact that this exists only as a freebie with Netflix feels kind of dirty though. It's such an undervaluation of Mania when there's no way to buy the game for any given mobile platform.

Also, the port was handled by Lab42, a subsidiary of Sumo Digital. And I think they're using fan art on their website, right?

It would be better if Mac/PC Netflix users could play too...

Yup. From doing some quick googling via lens, it’s from a Dude on Twitter.

from a personal perspective though, I find this Dumb. This undermines the Actual uniqueness of the game, and makes it cheaper than the actual game. From how I bought it (Switch, Physical, 39.99), you’re telling me, that I could’ve waited 2 years to play it on a shotty port? No thanks, I’d like to respect the work put in making this game. And I’m wondering if SEGA even gave the Green Light to do this, because no show on Netflix has to do with Mania. Prime Dash was prime, so why Mania?

Didn't they also use fan art to advertise the game when they first announced the port on that montage trailer?

Anyways, I mean, I don't know, it's neat? I guess it's nice to have Mania available on phones... although it was decompiled and brought to mobile not too long ago. But it's appreciative to have it in an official capacity... even though it's exclusive to subscribers of Netflix. So...🤷‍♂️. All I can say is "Huh, neat," and move on. Seems to be a competent enough port, so at least it isn't something shoddy. Hooray?

I'm not a big mania fan, but I feel sorry for the game right now.

At least someone is getting what I’m saying; I feel like this is cheating SEGA, and the people who worked on the game. I have the Plus version, and with it you get a booklet with all the hard work and ideas they had when making this. Don’t you think that it would be unfair to give such a good game away for less? That’s like giving away SA2 for 10$.
I think we should PERSERVE Mania, and keep it true to what it is: a great tribute to Classic Sonic fans Around the world. A celebration of its fans and history alike.

I...uh..."sampled" the Android version a little while back on a Galaxy Tab S9 FE. Seemed to run okay but it also crashed on me at least once.

Hard pass for me this. My ps4/5 version and plus collectors edition with the statue etc will get the love and appreciation it deserves with the best possible format. Free on netflix feels wrong for a game "by the mania, for the mania"
