Sonic-related pet peeves?

I think it's more to do with the fact it's Sir Lancelot aka the most famous knight of the round table.

Hm, do anyone else find it strange how it's the Shadow expy that's the Game Breaker here?

It's like in Battle where Shadow is easily the best character (sans custom Emerl).

I guess that leads to another peeve of mine; I'm really getting tired of how overpowered Shadow is. I get he's the ultimate life form and meant to be powerful, but holy shit his moveset is so broken that I realistically can't see him losing without it looking contrived. It's starting to bleed over into gameplay too; He's broken in ASR, Black Knight, and Battle. To the point where once you have him, there's almost no reason to use the rest of the cast because Shadow outclasses them in damn near everything.

Furry Vegeta almost feels like he's from a different series sometimes.

To be honest, overpowered characters in general bug me to no end, but this seems particularly prevalent in this franchise (especially in the fanworks). I mean, whether it's a hero or a villain, this sort of thing just kills the conflict of the story for me. I don't ever want to find myself saying, for instance, "Good gravy, nothing short of outright divine intervention will resolve this!" (Villains).

The dude's called the Ultimate Life-form, with that kind of title you kind of have to expect some level of OP-ness.

Maybe they shouldn't have made him the Ultimate Life Form, then.

Well he is, that's literally his entire character. No use complaining about it 10+ years after the fact.

I'm going to complain about it for as long as it leads to him being a shitty character.

Him being super powerful isn't really a detriment to his character. Yeah he's powerful on Black Knight, but he's optional and his OPness doesn't affect the story in anyway. He's (debatably) the best character in Battle, but he spends a lot of the game healing at Rouge's casino due to a injury he recived (so there goes the OP factor). Despite his Chaos Powers in SA2, Sonic still managed to be on equal footing with him.

So where's the issue here exactly? I guess with games like Shadow and 06 it's a problem, but to me it isn't a consistent one.

Making a character logically overpowered but functionally not creates dissonance. Shadow has so much to his advantage that it's hard to take any conflict he's involved in seriously. He doesn't feel like a believable rival to Sonic, he doesn't seem like he'd be threatened by most enemies he's faced, so when he is, it doesn't really make sense.

So what then? You have a Shadow stay true to his moniker and he becomes OP, you have him be vulnerable and mortal and it doesn't make sense.

Seems like quite the conundrum.

Let's kill him off.

e: serious answer fuck him being the ULF and tone him down a bit, only fanboys need him to be super special ultra powerful

There's nothing wrong with Shadow being powerful by itself, but when he outclasses most of the cast, including his "rival", then there's no excuse.

There's no reason why he still can't be "the Ultimate Life form" and still have his abilities be reasonably balanced.

I've always thought of Shadow as Iizuka's fan character...

No wonder fans got it in their head that recolors were a good idea, canon basically validated it with Shadow.

Well, that ties in to one of my problems with the likes of Mephiles and Nega.

On the flipside, I think the whole fancharacter/recolor craze is what retroactively put characters like Shadow in a less than desirable light, it's not really fair, but what can you do.

Not to mention Classic Amy, really. Plus pretty much all the Western Sonic media (SATam/Archie and Underground in particular).

I don't think Shadow is nearly as bad as fanmade recolours, let alone Mephiles or Nega, but then again I've never really disliked him so much as how he's been handled post-Heroes, so ...

I always thought Silver was the most overpowered of all, more so than Shadow. Hell most of the things he can do like float, fly at super speed and throw green rays of light are not even possible in the actual gameplay! His only weakness? Running at a snail's pace. XD

Well let's be fair, after Heroes Shadow really became what amounts to a bad fan character; kewl powers, tragic backstory, AAAGGGNNNST.

You get the picture. Keep in mind I still like Shadow, but there are so many things I hate about him.

Yeah well you can say the same thing for Silver. Except replace angst with whininess.

People hate Silver too, more than Shadow actually.

Shadow & Silver are probably the biggest targets for controversy in the series.

That reminds me: people hating Silver is another pet peeve of mine. He isn't a bad character by any stretch of the imagination, so why do people hate him?
