Sonic 4: Episode 2 Screens & Media Topic

Anybody thinking this game will be FULLY rendered in 3D don't get your hopes up. Looking at the screenshots it honestly looks like a blend of 3D and very well layered pre-rendered 2D. Still much better than Episode 1 but, don't be surprised if a lot of stuff looks more 2D in motion than it does here.

Apart from the backgrounds of course, they're obviously fully 3D, just saying they might be somewhat disconnected like the Casino Street background was (I hope they don't have that weird TOTALLY disconnected looking scrolling going on though like Generations 3DS had (most noticable in Radical Highway I think)).

This was probably mentioned already but fuck it I'mma say it anyway.

Look at this screen.

Sonic-4-Episode-2-Official-Screenshots-3-1024x576.jpg

Notice the background. Notice how it looks like the carnival in the background is at an ANGLE, as if Sonic is turning TOWARDS it. And notice how in all other screenshots of this level the carnival is just poking out of the right side of the screen (except for the goal post, where they're much closer to it).

Sonic 3 style level-transition anyone?

God I hate how they're handling Tails' tails. Both trying to pull off the disconnected-while-spinning look without a full spinball animation to cover up how ridiculous it is, and the weak looking running and flying animations where I don't believe for a second that his tails are doing anything to propel him. I can't think of any game past SA where his tails look any good in motion.

You haven't seen them in motion yet....unless you know something that we don't, which of course you probably don't

Frankly, I didn't "believe" his tails were propelling him with any of his previous animations, because they are tails. However, those instances being from being a game, I was able to suspend my disbelief. The only differences are the fact that the animation now has rotating tails rather than a flat disk which is designed to look like two tails spinning.

I'm really liking how this looks. The removal of that awful S4E1 shading, the more original zones (the only screen I'm getting a lot of deja-vu on is the one where Sonic is about to run into a log in what looks to be Aquatic Ruin 2.0, but that doesn't necessarily mean its a rehash), the 3D rendered levels, and the team moves (which will hopefully enhance the gameplay instead of hinder it), are all making this game look really nice so far.

Well, to be fair, we haven't seen this game in motion yet...

The jumping animation looks awkward, but I don't think we can judge what the running and other such animations look like without seeing them in motion. Despite the otherwise poor graphics, I thought Sonic animated fine in Episode I.

I don't need to see it in motion to know it's going to look bad, because it's obvious from the lack of effects and/or stylization. If it wasn't the same weak and unconvincing animation they've been using for the last decade we'd be able to tell from the screenshots.

I understand the concept of suspension of disbelief, but it can only be stretched so far. When the tails are rotating fast enough to look like helicopter blades, I'm good. When it looks like two balls of fluff spinning on a geologic time scale, it looks stupid. At that point you may as well just do http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IX6oUAGkoao.

*starts thinking that ice levels and carnival levels are separate, meaning the Aquatic Ruin, Ice Cap, and Carnival Night rehashes*

Really, these screenshots look absolutely fantastic. I can't wait to see this game in motion.

Hmm idk, it could be that Tails didnt fully curl up into a ball yet since he usually jumps after Sonic does and maybe thats why he looks akward at the moment?

Which reminds me, I hope they fixed Sonic's flipping speed depending on how fast he runs .Won't kill me if they don't, but that always kinda irked me in Ep 1.

Wow, that Christmas level is looking amazing. Also:

Tails looks to have invincibility there, so he can now use item boxes when he follows Sonic? Cool. I know it's an obvious thing to add, but it's nice to see regardless. It was always a little annoying for Player 2 to have to miss out on power-ups in Sonic 3&K.

Is that thing on the wall a fire spitting badnick or just a bird like the other one?

I can only imagine what would E1 look on e2's graphics. Especially Splash Hill Act 3.

Just noticed that the lamp posts in Christmas Carnival are lit by fire rather than being lightbulbs. Nice touch.

Coupled with the Eggsnowmen I dare say this game as a little bit of charm. It's almost like they care.

This game is already epic because of Eggman Snowmen. I'm serious, who wouldn't want a snowman with his sexy face on it?

I didn't even realize there were new screens. They are quite amazing, and I wonder what concept we'll get tomorrow. Also, finally a footage trailer that will confirm multiple things, the physics, parts of level design, music, and animations.

Maybe it's too early to say it, but This is becoming Sonic 4 as I truly imagined it.
