  • Tyson Hesse-Directed Animation for 'Sonic Dream Team' Hits The Internet

With Tee Lopes on the trailer's soundtrack too!

If you needed another reason to get excited for SEGA HARDlight's upcoming Apple Arcade title, Sonic Dream Team, then why not check out this latest trailer for the game? It features an incredible animated intro directed by Tyson Hesse and produced by Powerhouse Animation, with music composed by Tee Lopes.

The intro illustrates the slightly crazy premise of Sonic's new adventure - with the blue blur and his friends being pulled into a nightmarish dreamspace operated by Dr. Eggman. The villainous dictator is even seen morphing into various monsters and creatures as he tries to smush Sonic and pals to pieces. But wait! Cream, Cheese and new character Ariem appear to offer the Sonic Heroes some assistance!

It's the usual top-drawer animation that we've come to expect from Hesse and his team, and this one certainly doesn't disappoint with vibrant colours and lots of character. Let us know what you think of the intro in the comments below!

These short promotional animations are always so cool that it makes me wish we had a traditionally animated Sonic series again. (I'm not hating on Sonic Prime's artstyle, though, it's still awesome.)

Just as a reminder, This is a game made for iPhones and iPads!

I LOVE this intro! The animation is top notch (Shout-out to Luffy Eggman!) and the music is so catchy, It kinda has a Super Sentai vibe to it.

WOW. It’s truly amazing. Love the music and colors!  (I’m wondering what Ariem’s strings mean…)

What came to mind when I saw them was a dream catcher, a device used to filter out bad dreams from good ones. It's basically a hoop with a bunch of strings tied together inside it like a spider's web, with feathers on its outside.

Thinking more on this trailer, I hope that Cream being singled out alongside Ariem means that she's going to have an important role in the plot and that (hopefully!) we'll get some sort of explanation as to why she's been absent from the main series games for so long. Normally I wouldn't hold my breath for that last part, but if Ian Flynn is at all involved in this game's storyline, he'll probably have an explanation because he likes to overthink things just as much as I do and it's what I love about his writing.

I’m still… what’s the right word - not suspicious - but intrigued as to exactly what kind of gameplay experience Hardlight are going to provide. Apple Arcade bill this as an action game, but the subheading describes it as a “3D Prime Adventure” …whatever that means.

In any case, I might have to activate Apple Arcade for a month to give it a go.  The game is also for iMac and Apple TV and since those devices are supported I’d much rather make use of a controller for this experience.

Also, man alive was that intro wickedly animated. Great stuff!

I’m still surprised that this one is better than the animation output for Origins / Superstars. I would say quality was much better on the Frontiers prologue too - so that’s got me thinking that maybe it’s just a “Modern Sonic” thing and there is a different / stylistic approach between  how they animated this and the “classic sonic” era.

In any case, I think Mania + Adventures is still my favourites by far.

Can Modern Sonic be like this more often? Please? This is infinitely more appealing than the dull, miserable, "serious" shit like Forces and Frontiers.

I get what you mean, but I like the seriousness of some Sonic games, such as SA2 or Frontiers, but I also like a nice vibrant Sonic game

Fantastic opening animation; Apple must be stumping up decent money for SEGA to be taking this title so seriously.  It'll be baffling in this day and age if they can't secure an eventual multiplatform release.

I seem to remember some of the very earliest information about this game indicating that Cream was important, but I can't for the life of me find it again.  Anyone else recall this?

AFAIR, there was an article where it was written that they're going into Eggman's Dream through Cream's perception or something like that. I suppose that it means that she will be their link to the Dream World or something like that.

Which I suppose it means that even if she'll be playable, in story she might have a more separated role than the rest, and maybe have an active role without being directly inside core events, with more "magical-dreamy" stuff (basically something where the other character are the "protagonist", but she is the core character/subject of the story, and as the intro kinda seems to mean that she is physically sleeping, maybe it'll have a moment where it affect her, or she affect things). All that is speculation, of course xD

They outdid themselves, such an amazing animation for just an exclusive app game! Certainly had the “modern feel” that I know and love with the character’s move sets and personalities. Looking forward to this game!

They killed it with the animation and music! I always get hyped whenever these intros drop and I’m glad it seems they’re here to stay for a good while ^^

You can have a colorful world with vibrant visuals and still have a serious story. That's essentially what SA2 was.🤔

Edit: Meant to quote someone with this, ah well. XP

They went all out with the animation! Super cute and vibrant artstyle. Almost makes me excited for the game until I remember that I won't be able to play it lol.

That's important just in case people think this is a touch-screen only game. It's not.

This is by far the best quality animation they've put out yet. I'm really blown away here by the sheer polish and care that have seemingly gone into this product. So so glad to see Rouge and especially Cream back in a major role. I really hope they keep this up. Seriously, I absolutely love everything about this game thus far... Except for the massive monkey's paw here what with this game's apple arcade exclusivity.

The law of equivalent exchange sure is strong with this one.

I'll always be skeptical on this game until I see it in action, because it's hardlight, and their forces speed battle is crap quality; though this animation is nice... I don't really like the artstyle, those over-saturated colors are a bit too much for my tastes, but it's technically good anyway.

I'm a bit annoyed that Cream didn't appear in any of those cool action scenes and is depicted as if she's not part of the main "heroes" (despite being playable in the game), but anyway.

Guess we know where all the Superstars animation budget went after all. This shits all over it. It's arguibly better than Mania's opening too. Incredible.

These were provided unshaded at first because I wanted them to be versatile for different looks for us to discover as we found the palettes and style.

This looks like a game they took serious time with it. This is not some cheap game. Like mentioned before, if Apple got involved in this, whether it's development or funding, they want this title to be one of the reasons why you should subscribe to Apple Arcade.

Like personally, finally I'm getting something that increases the value of my Apple One subscription.
