  • Sonic Frontiers Reaches "The Final Horizon" With Update #3 On September 28th

    A Climactic Battle Awaits

Sonic Superstars got a new trailer and an October 17th release date at Gamescom Opening Night Live, but once that was done, Geoff Keighley dropped a bombshell: that wasn't the only Sonic news they had to share. Information on the third and final update for Sonic Frontiers was revealed, including a teaser trailer that has a lot more questions than answers.

It doesn't confirm much. We get to see Amy, Tails, Knuckles, Sonic, Sage and Eggman. The former 3 are in their Cyberspace digital form. Meanwhile, Sonic uses the Chaos Emeralds to transform into Super Sonic, but you may notice that there's some very interesting differences in his design. It's going to fuel a lot of speculation among fans in the road to the update's release.

That's really all they shared about the update's contents though. As for when it is releasing, that was the other big detail to come from this trailer. SEGA confirmed that the update, which is being called "The Final Horizon", will be releasing on September 28th. We did know that the game would be coming out late in the year, but that may sound earlier to some Sonic fans than expected. That said, they re-confirmed that there would be new story content, new playable characters, and new challenges.

So, what is there left to say? Well, the fact that this was just a teaser trailer certainly leaves open the possibility that there may be another trailer that provides a little more information closer to the update's release. However, due to the story content that this update contains, SEGA may decide to keep any details to a minimum, just to dodge any potential spoilers. Nevertheless, there's only a little more than a month to go before the update releases. So, the wait won't be long. With all that said, you can see the new teaser trailer down below!

    Isn't it obvious?

It's Sonic going Super Saiyan 2.

This was a joke, by the way.

Blue eyes Super Sonic makes me think they're going to give us some sort of cyber enhanced variant on Super Sonic. Hopefully we get a real final boss this time.

The leaks from awhile back already confirmed as much, but it's really interesting that they're actually full-on reworking the whole final act of the game. The new look for Supreme is cool.

We just need him to move so we can see the afterimages to confirm Hyper Sonic.

But more likely... just a special ancients powered boost I would imagine.

Considering that Tails, Knuckles and Amy seem to be stuck in the digital world again I now do ponder if this is going to be a revised / alternate story / ending they are cooking up here (as opposed to a post-frontiers adventure (or something that takes place before the final boss).

Man, I kinda was thinking it’d come later this year. But the 28th of September?? That’s awesome. Looking forward to it.

It should be noted that new Titan Form isn't Supreme.

It’s not? Huh, the silhouette gave me that impression outside the arms. I won’t complain about a new one though.

Supreme is a silhouette along the new ???, I'm assuming that if the final act is redone it means Supreme gets a rework as well as a new final boss, because it was criticized for being to cheap and easy (and I agree).

Anyway, sorry Superstars trailer, but this one takes the cake for me.

Are you sure? Examining Supremes Concept Art shows how damn near similar it looks. The only obvious new addition being the hands.

    image.thumb.png.68127f5bf5490a106e0e2d0a32daf127.png

The red lines on his 'backpack,' the horns that go straight up, I managed to spot the same multiple red eyes on one frame as the camera was turning to face it. I reckon it's Supreme at least. But if it was an entirely new Titan, it'd closely resemble Supreme which would be a shame. I rather like the Titan designs and it would suck to have another Giganto recolour.

Its probably a powered up version of Supreme.

Functionally, it's probably just Super Sonic 2 - which I guess I'm fine with so long as the context at least is nice. Here's my theory about what's happening and how the story is probably going to change:

    Spoiler

Sonic is going to somehow grow into the same power that Sage "got" throughout Frontiers' base game, being the weird blue-white glow she got that allowed her full control over the Ancients' technology. With this, Sonic is essentially going to weaponize his corruption like a lot of fans theorized he would do in the base game. We know it kills him, but we also know it makes him stronger, too. Rather than be "trapped between realities" and have his friends sacrifice themselves to bail him out, I think what's instead going to happen is that they overcome some trials of the old Ancients in order to gain the power needed for Sonic to "resonate" with his corrupted energies - thus freeing him and making him stronger at the same time (though with a potential caveat being that he can only "tap in" to his new power as Super Sonic, with some excuse being that his body can only use up so much strength at once). The new power is short lived because Sonic will either obliterate The End without Sage sacrificing herself and permanently use up all the power, or Sonic will use his corruption power to re-seal The End and trap it between realities like what had happened to him earlier. Either way, I think Sage will probably live in the new ending.

    Spoiler

The blue-white glow Sage gained during the game wasn't a power, and it wasn't something she got from the ancients. It was a representation of her inner turmoil. The more she interacted with Sonic, the more she lamented his regrettable fate, the more she yearned to have that same interaction with a family of her own and the more she respected him for it - the worse it got. By the end of the game, she was near completely blue because she was fully confident in her selfless dedication to protecting her own family.

That being said, the blue eyes thing can probably be tied to regular Sonic as well. The aura points to additional cyber corruption power, but remember that base Sonic gains very similar blue eyes when he reaches the max ring count and unlocked the MAX boost.

My guess is this is something similar to that. A Super Sonic that reaches his ring cap gets something of a boost. Maybe a bit of infinite time-limit or an uptick of power that would allow him to deal severe damage to the boss. Either way, the power creep is real and Frontiers is continuing to push that envelope.

All good points, I actually just kinda forgot about the more symbolic elements of Sage's appearance. But I am still of the opinion that the blue eyes for Sonic has got something to do with the Ancients, rather than his Power Boost (which I don't believe is an element acknowledged in the story). I also think that they want to introduce Super Sonic 2 in a way that allows them to comfortably keep him as a one off plot element, so the status quo is reset by the next game. If the power is all Sonic and not something at least fueled by the Ancients/the corruption, I feel like that goes against what Sonic Team had said they wanted.

It could be the ancients - but I think its more likely that its just more inspiration taken from Movie Sonic. The devs were on record saying they took inspiration from that, and this could just be another thing on the pile.

less of a SSJ2 and more of a "serious mode".

If the dev's really wanted to create a one-off power increase that could easily be written out of existence, they would have went for something much more dramatic than an aura boost and an eye color change. Much like how secret rings and black knight were able to go way off the deep end with something unique for their new Super Forms because the setting automatically would in effect "retcon" anything they did - cyberspace could do the same thing for Frontiers. If you plop the boss fight inside cyberspace, Sonic could transform into anything you wanted him too (Hyper / Cyber / SSGSS / Whatever) and you wouldn't have to worry about the consequences for future games if you collapse CyberSpace when the fight is over. Problem solved.

Yeah. I'd be pretty surprised too. I'd always advise against anyone getting their hopes up. Examining the teaser, I can see the logic in the Hyper Sonic theory. Multi-coloured sparks appeared after the second burst of power and it even looks like Sonic has a separate neon glow not tied to his yellow glow. But I remain skeptical since his base colour doesn't seem to change.

I suppose I could counter my point by considering that they'd be unlikely to have Hyper Sonic look visually the same as he did in S3&K due to the potential for inducing a seizure, so a new visual style would have to be introduced. But I'm still skeptical, regardless...

Have Hyper Sonic be shining white with a Cyan blue aura.

That won’t cause a seizure, will it?

    Finally, sonics equivalent to kaioken.

Regardless, I can't wait for both the update and the inevitable wave of fanart this new form will bring. We got prime sonic, and now this. I REALLY hope sonic Team is going to allow sonic to have more one-off super forms like he did in the 2000s.

It can't be post game, the gang is all ghostly... Unless this CGI really just means nothing as usual... But my bet is third act completely remade.

Also, could they finally make SS playable anywhere.
