  • Sonic & Co. Fight Eggman's Dreams in Sonic Dream Team, Launching Dec. 5 on Apple Arcade

I'm dreaming of another Sonic game this year.

Less than a month since the launch of the last Sonic game, we've already got the announcement of our NEXT Sonic game, coming from mobile developer SEGA HARDlight, developer of the Sonic Dash series, Sonic Forces Speed Battle, Chu Chu Rocket Universe, and others.

While details on the game are light right now, the trailer shows off bright and colorful 3D environments, multiple playable characters, and new animation by Powerhouse. The trailer itself also features a new track composed by Tee Lopes. From the official press release...

    Quote

In this all-new Sonic adventure, the evil Dr. Eggman has discovered The Reverie – an ancient device with the power to manifest dreams in the real world. Navigate twisted dreamscapes, rescue your friends, and put a stop to Dr. Eggman’s nightmarish dreams of world domination!

Below are a few of the key features players can look forward to this December:

    Six Playable Characters
Choose from six different characters – Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, Amy Rose, Cream and Rouge. Each character brings their own flare and personality, fitting within three movement types that provide unique exploration opportunities while navigating the dream world.

    Spectacular Boss Battles
Four spectacular boss battles that will test your skills across the different movement types.

    Never-Before-Seen Dream Worlds
We’re not in Green Hill anymore! Play through 12 intricate levels set within four unique dream worlds with mind-bending environments that include wall-running, gravity changes and more.

    Combining Mobile and Cross-Platform Experiences
Sonic Dream Team bridges the gap between mobile and console, allowing players a quality experience across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV.

Personally I don't mind it being Apple exclusive but what I could really go for is the ability to simply pay a flat fee upfront and buy it to own. I'm willing to pay for apps as long as they give me a good value. It's the great ruse that is "free-to-play" that destroys my interest in mobile gaming (that and touch controls).

This isn't a "free to play" game though. All Apple Arcade games do not have the "free to play" model that includes IAPs such as 3 types of currencies etc.

The upside is that all Apple Arcade games must be updated for all Apple devices while on the platform. So if I buy an Apple device 10 years from now, as long Dream Team is on Apple Arcade, it will be playable on that device - unlike the non-Apple Arcade games, in which we depend on the developer and could be incompatible with your device 10 years from now.

The downside is yeah, you need a continuous AA sub to play Dream Team, I guess this allows Apple to tell the developers you must update your game to play on our supported devices while on our Arcade platform and we will pay you...

You need to spend at minimum $400+ if you don't own an Apple product and then whatever amount the subscription service cost, and that's assuming you have an interest beyond Sonic. Why would you waste this much money for only ONE game?

....no, the minimum is $129 if you want it brand-new.

Depends what you consider is canon though. To me, Sonic Prime is just another branching extension of the overall Sonic Universe. So it’s really no different to any other show, comic, movie or spin-off that’s come before it.

I say this in the sense that it’s not really “canon” to the games (and their already messy lore & narrative). Prime just reaches back in a more direct way using them as a baseline. I wouldn’t really think to much into it beyond that as it’s incredibly unlikely that future sonic game will ever reference the Prime series in any meaningful capacity (or at all).

The ironic thing though,  is that the subject matter of what Prime represents - a multiverse - was a perfect opportunity to explore all the various versions of Sonic media across the years via it’s “shatterverse”, and it didn’t (or has yet to) happen.

We don't get to consider what is or is not canon? SEGA, Sonic Team and the new lore council does? I'm just going off what things Takashi Iizuka and Ian Flynn have said on the subject matter and it should be noted the other properties were not singled out like IDW and Prime were. (Though as you said Prime has gotten no reference to it so far, unlike IDW.)

However, you maybe still be right in a different way and me and the others are indeed making a mountain out of mole hill. When asked about how Prime fits into the game's continuity despite all the problems including it would cause the answer was to wait for the end of season 3 as that would supposedly explain it. Considering your last point was one of the biggest negatives lobbed at the show, the big twist for season 3 very well could be Prime is a different universe and the actual "prime" Sonic helps Prime!Sonic and Prime!Shadow fix their universe. Thus making it canon to SEGA!Sonic, as in Sonic finally meets one of his alts.

Meanwhile, in another universe, Sally’s reaction to Lanolin acting exactly like her:

So this game would have to be cross-compiled for both x86 Macs and M-series...

My MBP is still x86 because I'm clinging to that as long as possible.

Looks a lot like Sonic Lost World. And my enjoyment of that game is mixed at best. Glad Sega's getting around to using more characters then the main cast. I'll see if I can give this one a try.

Apple Arcade still depends on the developer to update the game, Apple themselves don't maintain the compatibility. Meanwhile other platforms typically have the platform holders maintain their own backwards compatibility so the developer doesn't need to do any work if the specifications are updated.

This is frequently a problem with all Apple products, especially MacOS as the entire OS just becomes an endless work drain to maintain support, and why so many games just drop support for the platform if not skip it entirely.

Also as a reminder, Chu Chu Rocket! Universe only ever existed on Apple Arcade, was delisted from it, and Apple stops letting you access delisted things after two weeks. The game is literally impossible to play now and has turned into a pumpkin.

WHY isn't this a console game?
WHY is it an Apple Arcade exclusive?
WHY does it look better than the ACTUAL current(?) 3D console game?

    Why does SEGA hate money

Given that Apple has a ton of products out there, and a deal with arcade means a steady revenue without having to worry about number of units sold, I’d say this is sega liking money very much.
and Apple people are just as blindly loyal one overly forgiving as is sonic fans. It’s a match made in heaven.

    Apple exclusive? Pass.

Thought they would have learned after the Nintendo exclusivity deal which pretty much limited sales of games. Looks ok but I refuse to change to apple

Their exclusive deal with Nintendo didn’t work because only 13 people bought a Wii U. On consoles that sold well, exclusives did fine. Original colors, advance games adventure 2. Apple has sold billions of devices. Between phones, iPads, Apple TVs, Mac’s; I feel like they won’t be hurting for an audience.

As a loyal Apple customer (with an Apple Arcade subscription) I resent that!

This game looks AMAZING! It seems very ambitious for a game made for iPhones and iPads!

    Plus, Cream is Playable! Nice!

Thank you Sega for giving me a reason to justify my Apple Arcade subscription!

Yeah, I’m with you on this one. I don’t know how releasing something on Apple is a “fuck you” to the fans. Like what, Sonic fans don’t have apple products? Last I checked, nearly half the smart phones sold are apple. And that’s to say nothing of the other products.  I feel like this is more Apple Arcade contracting a game than sega trying to be exclusive.

you can grab a used Apple TV for less that $100. But if you want to get fancy, new ones are $120. It’s also a great way to play the mobile sonic cd/1/2 in 4K on a tv.
the first month of the service is free. After that, it’s only $7 but it’s not like a sonic game needs more time than that. Assuming you already have a Bluetooth controller; you’re good to go for $120 and you can also play some frogger when you get bored.

So that’s a $127 barrier to entry. 1/4th the cost of a PS5. That’s probably too steep for most people, but it’s not like they released an exclusive game for the PSVR 2 or anything. Or even like putting out Wii U exclusives. If this does well, we’ll see more mobile sonic which, given the more casual nature, would probably be a great home for him. And then maybe we’ll see some classics being but up on the ps + or game pass.

whether or not you’re an apple person, I think we should want this venture to go extremely well.

The game does look decent to play, it just sucks that this is locked being an Apple Exclusive. But what is the most interesting thing about this to be is that were getting 4 Sonic games alongside Frontier, The Murder of Sonic The Hedgehog and Superstars in just over 1 year, which is something I wouldn't think happen.

Got a small bit of Tails and Cream gameplay from a new Hardlight tweet:

I imagine they'll do one of these for the other two gameplay styles as well leading up to release.

Personally, I'm not really sure how to feel about the gameplay as of yet. Something about it seems slightly off to me, but it might just be the fact that it's chopped pieces of gameplay which keeps shifting around, rather than giving us a full glimpse at how things play regularly.

Still though, I don't mind renewing Apple Arcade for a month to try this out. Honestly, if it goes well, I think it would be great if we could see some other revivals hit Apple Arcade (yes, this is more copium for a Runners revival that isn't made by Gameloft).

The more I see of this game, the more it reminds me of Fall Guys, it's incredible.

Tails' voice sounding exactly like the voice of a Fall Guys' bean doesn't help.

The new video is intentionally confusing and doesn't show much of the game; most of those locations were already shown in screenshots too; anyway, the level design looks very basic and flat, and I have some concerns about controls too by looking at the very first few seconds of the video, when Cream "steers" in a very clunky way.

Regardless, I'm happy that Cream is part of the main cast of a game again, but this is not enough to claim that "she's back". It's a random mobile game that only 10% of the Sonic fanbase will be able to play, she'll be back when she'll be playable in a console game, mainline or major spin-off at least. Cream was already playable in other more accessible mobile games in the past, this doesn't mean that she was "back".
