  • IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog Going On Break in Early 2024

Sonic's mainline comic steps aside to make space for Fang

IDW Sonic editor David Mariotte has confirmed that the mainline Sonic comic will not be running simultaneously with the Fang the Sniper mini series, and will insead be going on break over the course of its run. This confirmation came via his Bluesky Social account, when users Scurvey Piratehog asked why the comic's 69th issue was left out of the February solicitations. Mariotte stated that they wanted to "make space" for the Fang mini, and confirmed that the mainline comic would be back later in 2024 (presumably, once the Fan comic wraps up, which should be in April). For anyone without a Bluesky account, you can read the posts below:

The Fang mini series was confirmed last month, and will debut in January 2024. Special thanks to Fairguy for DMing me this on Twitter.

Terrible decision IMO. The last time they decided to hold the main series back for a miniseries caused both to end up just feeling absolutely and utterly too spread out. Not only that, but it defeats the purpose of a miniseries. The entire point of a miniseries is a secondary series that doesn't impede on the main series.

There's going to be a four month hiatus for the main IDW series if you aren't interested in the Nack arc. And depending on if the ongoing plotlines are wrapped by that point, it's going to feel overtly drawn out.

Assuming 68 won't end on a huge cliffhanger, I think Imposter Syndrome was worse. it just ruined the pace of both stories.

I mean, last 2 issues were about Knuckles, Chaotix, Rouges, Cream and Skunks. No Sonic or Tails, barely any Eggman or a larger plot.

So Fang mini will be slightly longer and Classic not Modern, but not that different.

I don't think is decision is one made deliberately. Art on a lot of recent issues has looked unfinished so this is probably their way of keeping from overexerting themselves.

I would probably put that down to the fact IDW has been pushing for more issues to come out rapidly because they’re in financial difficulties and Sonic’s one of their biggest sellers. 900th Adventure, the Amy one shot, the Summer one shot, the Halloween one shot, the upcoming Christmas one shot, etc.

Even the Fang miniseries could be considered that, as much as I’m excited for it. Bit hard not to take it as cashing in on Superstars bringing him back and striking while the iron is hot. If it’s caught up on IDW, they only really have themselves to blame for squeezing as much out of the series as they could.

I'm sure it'll be worth the wait, but man I want to see how Silver is doing asap haha Too bad it's delayed, but there's likely other reasons no being mentioned and this is more like a good excuse. I want to think that, at least, it helps with the wait more in my mind.

Could be a good thing. The recent and seemingly unrelenting one shots struck me as idw doing a fair bit of barrel scraping for extra coin to try and keep up profit. I was worried that this would cause a decline in quality. If a break helps to stop this, then good.

I've heard it said that a rushed game is bad forever and a delayed game is eventually good. (Which isn't always true given the introduction of patches/updates and of course Mighty No. 9, but I digress.) Hopefully this at least holds true with the comics; I only recently started getting into IDW through the book collections and I have definitely noticed the series' mixed quality.

But surely burning out the Sonic comic team to the point that they need a break to catch up isn't going to help them recover in the long run. IDW should be focusing on getting other books to sell, while also supporting Sonic instead of putting all their eggs into one basket. I'm still excited for the Fang mini series as the plot intrigues me but if this keeps up the main title arc will suffer from the interruption. Just like the Unleashed adaption did in the Archie reboot.

    Well that's a bummer.

On the bright side, the premise for the Fang series sounds interesting, so hopefully it will be worth putting the main series on hold (I say, still wincing at the thought of waiting four months.)

Honestly, I'm always up for more Bean and Bark shenaniganery, so that should be fun to watch.

Hopefully this isn't another "break" like the end of Archie, especially with IDW in the hole.

If that's how it turns out, I wonder if SEGA is just gonna look for yet another company to license out to or if they'll just decide to forget the whole thing. Hopefully we'll at least get new Sonic comics somewhere.

    Will you stop that! XD

Yeah, hopefully this doesn't mean anything too bad. It at least give me time to catch up on the other issues. I'm actually behind ten issues.

I'm pretty behind myself because I've been relying on the book compilations, and I actually still haven't purchased volume 15. I try to do my Amazon shopping on Mondays, so I should pick that up tomorrow.

    Spoiler

Originally I wasn't actually sure if I'd keep reading the IDW comics after Ian Flynn brutally murdered my favorite character in the book (to be fair he had it coming to him), but I'm glad I gave volume 14 a shot because Surge is a hot mess and I am all for it. Also it was interesting to see her imagination turn against her when she started hallucinating.

(Ignore this part, something weird happened when I edited this and now it's doubled up and I have no idea how to fix it)
