Sonic 4: Episode 1 Impressions, Thoughts, & Help Topic

The bit I kept having trouble with was the medium height rings you have to jump and get while also reaching the last platform with the same jump to get those last 3 rings. I'd always jump too early and miss one ring, but if you jump just after you pass the sunflower then you get all 3 and make the last platform for the last 3 rings just fine.

That's the exact problem I was having, and then I reversed it and started jumping too late so I missed the first ring. Managed it in the end by fluke. It's a pretty awesome little demo sequence.

Oh, I forgot to mention how I was right about Super Sonic lighting up act 2 of LLZ, everyone worship me. B)

On another note I wanted to say how much I enjoy the final boss. I can't believe how many people complained because it was too hard. I wish more bosses were like that. I know I said I don't want rehashes for the next episodes, but I do kinda want to see the really giant Eggman robot thing from S&K again.........and another Doomsday zone.

My main gripe was just how bland the music was considering how long it takes to beat. D8 I enjoy a good challenging boss myself.

Oh, but I also completely failed to notice any kind of pattern as to what causes your rings to drop out and what causes your rings to FLY OUT IN EVERY DIRECTION WITH ABOUT A 10% CHANCE OF RECOVERING JUST ONE. D8

I think it works just like in the Rush games; the more hits you take, the higher your rings will fly (though I remember it rises sharply at some point). I think the rings's flying speed is reset when you grab new rings without recovering any of your previous rings. Something like that.

Special Stage 7.

I have to keep going through Mad Gear and not get hit just to get bounced into an exit circle. This is starting to do my head in. I just want Super Sonic so I can get a few more achievements and be done with it. Eurgh.

You don't need to keep doing Mad Gear. You can get any Emerald on any regular act so long as you haven't already got one there.

I'm convinced that was intentional, just so we can't abuse the "One Ring Rule"

I know, but I've done Acts 1 on the first 3 stages and most of the second acts as well. I was going to go for Lost Labyrinth, but it has that balancing ball thing which I suck the ass at. This is the only one I can do consistently.

Then what about the Act 3s? This isn't Sonic 1. From stage order you can have all the Emeralds at the end of LLZ1.

YES! I finally got all of the end scene rings and got the Super Sonic ending and Sonic head Avatar Award :D

Here's a video that helps:

End sequence is at 06:25.

You are a savior.

Thank you. :P

Quick question actually, for anyone who's collected all the rings during that final scene; does it only count if you do that AFTER getting through E.G.G. Station without taking damage, or will it still count even if you get hurt at the boss but manage to get all the rings during that final Splash Hill scene run?

It's just one time yesterday I could have SWORN I got all of them, only for it to do nothing. Although I probably missed one and just didn't notice.

Tried it on the iPod version too, smaller screen + lower frame rate makes it pretty hard to even see the rings at that speed.

I didn't find him that long or that hard. It's a final boss after all, it shouldn't be too easy. For a final boss, I thought it was just right.

I don't think it was particularly longer than the final boss of Sonic 2, or at least, the multiple phases prevents him from getting stale too quickly.

It's true that it takes a lot of hits, but with the normal jump + homing attack, you can usually hit him twice every time; when he launches his arm and you hit it back, you have the time to hit him 4 times.

While I died a lot, I thought it was a great battle with the right difficulty.

On a side note, I really enjoy the presence of Rings AND Checkpoints between every boss of E.G.G. Station. Compared to Sonic 2...

I never figured it out too I thought I was too close or too far away. I even beat him without losing rings... I finally accepted defeat and watched a YouTube video..YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO DO A HOMING ATTACK ON HIM!!!!! /rage I never even bothered since since I don't really like the game too much...

You act like the series has never thrown a suicide squeeze at us before. Seriously, you had to be reminded of both Rush and Rush Adventure after you figured out Eggy was going for a final blow kill shot. Jumping on his head was the only thing you could have done.

Even if you were thinking Egg Viper, that mindset should have went out the window the first time you died.

Never paid much attention to the rush series so I would naturally be trying to avoid him. There is no "should". Me and you are different people playing some game or something "should" not have an effect on me beating this boss. It was a stupid idea in my opinion. I swear so many on these forums try to pass theirs as facts or guidelines... >>

You just need all the rings during the final scene. There's over 50 rings in E.G.G. Station EASILY. If you kept them, there'd be no reason to get the ones on the little final run.

So E.G.G. Station doesn't matter, it's just the final scene.

>over 50 rings

I call BS on that. I tried going for untouchable and got every ring up until Eggman's final mech and didn't even have 40, if I recall correctly. But there were definitely not 50. In other words, it's impossible to be Super Sonic on the final boss without cheating, which is the entire reason untouchable is such a bitch to get.

I know not trying to really get more than a few rings I ended up with about 30, so I really never found out. There just seems to be too many for there not to be 50.

What?

I'm not passing any opinion as fact, I am applying basic common sense.

If you thought the final boss would kill himself in his swan song (ala Egg Viper) and then saw that the floor was blown away, than I think that it is a pretty good indicator that waiting on him to kill himself is a strategy that's not gonna pan out for you. Yes, if your strategy does nothing more than get you killed than you should revise it. No opinion there, all fact.

I think it's 36 in EGG Station and 21 in the ending sequence. It doesn't matter how many you have from EGG Station and whether or not you got hit, just collecting all the ending sequence rings will get you Super Sonic.

Finally bought it on PS3 today.

Everything past Splash Hill Act 3 is 'meh'.

Casino Street Act 2 is the most horrible stage in the entire game, the card flipping sections are really poorly designed and misleading. You expect the red cards to always be in the opposite position to the black cards but that just isn't the case, I lost so many lives because I was looking for a pattern that just wasn't there.

The aesthetics of the game really bother me as well. Everythings trying to be flashy and modern; the textures, the menus, the fonts, everything. There's nothing really classic about this game at all.

My biggest gripe is definatly the homing attack though, not because it's there but because it's so poorly implemented that why they thought it would be a good idea is beyond me.

It's beyond me why they thought the homing attack, a crutch designed for the early 3D games, would fit well in a 2D game where it's already easy to hit bad guys and springs to begin with. "Optional" my ass, the game's levels are built around it.

Honestly I woulnd't have minded the HA so much if:

A- It didn't destroy the flow of the game.

B- The air dash couldn't be used to get speed.

C- There wasn't that horribly annoying reticule.

D- You could only use it if in ball form (Adventure-Shadow style HA > 06-onwards style HA)

E- If there were no Bubbles chains.

A lot of reasons, but for a 2D game they should have been obvious.

Every fucking time I jump near an object.

Yeah this is pretty goddamned annoying.

Change the variables in the homing attack so that you can't use it at a stand-still, and its range/accuracy increases depending on how fast you're moving.

Also animate it so it looks like Sonic zooms in smoothly, instead of homing in and bouncing back a foot. It looks jarring, it should look and feel smooth and could do well as a tool to keep the flow if you're good enough to keep your speed high and give it worthwhile range (this type of homing attack configuration would do well in 3D aswell).
