Sonic Prime Netflix Premieres Sonic Prime Season 3's First Episode on YouTube, Available Now

Those eagerly waiting for the finale of Sonic Prime can get a taste of Season 3 early. This morning, Netflix After School's YouTube channel posted the first full episode, "Grim Tidings."

The season picks up immediately after the events of Season 2, with Shadow and Sonic facing the fallout of Nine's rejection. This follows Netflix's teaser trend of giving viewers the first episode early both via YouTube and (strangely enough) Roblox. This also comes as we've learned that the first season will soon be hitting blu-ray.

The rest of Season 3 will premiere in less than a week, January 11.

This episode was fine. Action is as smooth as ever and so far Nine is pulling being a Big Bad pretty well, he gets the the evil posing down.

I am worried about how this can even fill 7 more episodes, because if Chaos Council was dead, then this could easily be finished in 2-3 episodes. I'm guessing Sonic will go through old Shatter Spaces yet again and I'm not too excited about this prospect.

Lastly, I have one major complaint, and it's a very very odd one.

Shadow is far too reasonable.

"GHAAA, they are never satisfied!!!" screams someone at Sega. "Do you want him mean or nice? Logical or impulsive? Decide you bastards!!"

I want him to be a deep individual, capable of more than one mood. I want heights the of emotional complexity he brought to the franchise and these days he has so little.

Too hard? Go with "angry but for a good reason".

Shadow in this so-bland vanilla in this episode and way too supportive of Sonic. The previous season started with him furious with Sonic and he has all the reasons to be angry again. Obviously, the world is exploding, and making him a thick idiot who fights Sonic instead of focusing on escape would been much-much-much worse. But imagine if he gave one punch before restraining himself. Or if his every line betrayed the barely contained resentment. How about some, you know, friccin emotions?

Or how about this exchange:
"Sonic, go for the prism!"
"And leave you alone with them?
"I'll be fine"
Can you feel how dry this is? Where is bravado, the swagger? How about
"And leave you alone with them? followed by "No, leave them alone with ME!"
or "You can't take them alone" followed by "Don't insult me." reply.
While talking about last season I said I'm fine with Shadow being a bit flawed, and this shows the danger of nothing but positive light.

Now, you might argue that this was done for the climax of the story. Shadow was so supportive because Sonic lost everything, he's the last thing that gave him hope and kept Sonic going. And he sacrificed himself, leaving Sonic all alone.
First, we'll see if the next episode will capitalize on those emotions.
Second, that sounds like sacrificing characterization for the sake of drama. We have seen worse (Tails, Forces) but still.
Third, imagine if Shadow was all angry and edgy, but still decided to protect Sonic? If despite everything, he still chose saving over destroying? IDK, to me it sounds kinda like emotional complexity.

 

Just to be clear, I don't hate Shadow in this episode. In the end his sacrifice is heroic. I'm just pointing out it is a step back from last season.

Well if anything, I'm sure some Sonadow shippers will be happy, much to Sontails fans dismay :P

While I may not like this show as much as other people, Shadow continues to be the best thing about it IMO.

This was... grim, if you'll pardon the pun. I know that logically, the show's ending has to have some return to at least something resembling the status quo, but given how this episode ended and the whole tease about Sonic himself shattering, I have no idea how the writers are gonna pull off the conclusion. And quite frankly, I'm not sure how my overly sensitive heart can take whatever comes next.

Given tbe INFINATE possibilities that could have been explored with the concept of a shatterverse it seems rather lazy we only see 4 diffeent ones before the the remerging or closeness to, remerging of the stone

Three. We're almost done.

1) There are only 4 shards
2) Infinite possibilities mean that we will never explore all of them, so four or a million is still less than 1% of infinity
3) Sadly the budget is very much not infinite, especially with 3D shows.

This may also answer a question posed in the Jakks Toys thread About them potentially moving on from Prime and juat producing recolours of existing designs.

Shadow it throwing Sonic out of the Dimension and the fight. I missed why he chose to do that?! Crap!! Still....putting yourself in mortal danger to allow another to escape? That's something Maria did for Shadow. Neat reference or dumb luck? You decide.

I think it's just a loosely similar scene.

And he did it because Nine needs Prism Energy that Sonic still has in him.

I watched the episode yesterday, and- OMG! I was hanging onto every single scene as it all played out! Shadow being- different is really interesting! I can't wait to see how the rest of season three plays out!

Oof. Sonic having to watch his friends die and his world explode was pretty brutal. I mean wow, they are really kicking the dude while he was down.

And Nine really is full on Eggman at this point. Using his intellect to build his utopia no matter the cost. He's basically making Eggmanland.

This final season is also supposed to somehow explain how Prime is canon to the main Sonic series. I'm hoping its via actual multiverse travel with the main Sonic coming in for a assist, since a lot of Prime's problems disappear if Prime!Sonic simply isn't actually the Sonic Prime.

...You know, I heard recently people saying Tarkovsky Clone Wars is bad because "Jedi aren't supposed to be this strong"

Minor continuity issues really shouldn't be a decisive factor in whether the spin-off is good or not.

(also, I'm betting 100 to 1 that it ain't gonna happen)

I feel like Shadow should've taken out the Robot counterfeits he seems a bit weak for an ultimate lifeform, Emerald or no Emerald. If that was the Sonic X version of Shadow, Nine would already be dead lol. I do like him nice though but idk I feel like he isn't himself here, like where is his cocky attitude (I'm the coolest)? Like instead of saying, "I'll be fine!" He could've said something like, "they're alone with me!" Instead, he just got jumped on and got sent to the Shadow realm where he'll probably meet the Real Eggman in the dark void area.

Still, it's kind of interesting that the Big Bad of Season Three is literally Villain Tails. Who has access to incredible reality-altering power. That is NOT a scenario I could have ever expected outside of a crack fanfiction ten years ago. And I love it.

Thats just the thing though, in the lead up to Prime, a lot of people bit onto the hard sell that this was canon. That we'd be getting something 1 to 1 with the games verse.

and all things weighted, this version of Sonic, as a character,  just isn't that. Its not even close. This isn't the same Hedgehog that we saw running through any of the games. It'd be one thing to judge Prime as a spinoff, and weigh him on his own merits as an individual take on the character - but that kind of logic doesn't apply here because that's not the bill of goods we were sold. We were told to expect canon, and as it stands an alternate take on the character under that promise is unacceptable.

I feel quite the opposite. Although Sonic was clearly the target of most of the focused abuse from the Grim team - he also took said abuse on the chin. He was getting bounced around like a pinball while Shadow fared much better holding his own. Shadow had to save Sonic multiple times over the course of the episode. Even if you go back and watch the running sequence in Ghost hill, there were several moments where Shadow had to reach back and push Sonic forward to keep him ahead of the pace. Saving him from the rouge asteroid. Keeping him from getting pancaked by Grim Amy's hammer and yeeting him into orbit at the end - the entire episode read like "Shadow > Sonic".

 

That's not a display of weakness. He outshines the main character by a fairly large margin.

 

There is no shame in getting dropped by what is essentially a small army of Metal Sonic's (especially considering how OP Chaos Sonic was). He's the ultimate life form, not a god. He lived up to the rep and then some. Without him, Nine would have captured Sonic and we'd be staring at a game over screen.
