[Badge Contest] Werehog Winners!

Yet another submission. Hope you don't mind. I can't be arsed to color this because I have a headache @_@ I intended it's colour scheme it be predominantly midnight blue, green 'irises' and neon-coloured markings of the like seen on Dark Gaia's minions i.e The Night enemies in Unleashed.

 

Metal Werehog.

 

It's segmented arms are capable of stretching fair distances due to two super strong polymer cables with tremendous elasticity running through each arm and linking each segment. The arms are segmented to facilitate longer reach. These cables have enormous resilience to snapping. The blades that compose it's 'fingers' are titanium that have been sharpened with industrial diamonds, making all four claws on each arm capable of slicing and penetrating through sheet steel with ease after a particularly forceful strike.

 

It's power source are fragments of Dark Gaia, siphoned from Dr Eggman's fusion furnace which had been invented to piece back together the monster. The vents on the top of it's arms disperse purple smoke when it is utilizing Dark Gaia's fragments to mobilize itself more efficiently, going into 'Unleashed Mode'. Because it does not have an everlasting source of fuel and is threatened with deactivation if it runs out, it only activates Unleashed Mode when it is in trouble and conserves the energy derived from Dark Gaia's fragments carefully.

 

Nevertheless, it has a very pronounced aggressive streak and it's AI has been honed to the point that it can use it's arms and claws in remarkably creative ways. It has been known to lock-on to it's targets and then use the arms like a makeshift slingshot by holding onto objects either side of it, walk backwards as far as it can and then let go, body-slamming anything in front of it with both speed and power. Metal Werehog's structure is extremely resilient and has hefty bulk which means it can perform this manoever without damaging itself.

Note, the original model I modified was a trophy rip from SSB from The modelers resource, could have done it from scratch, however I didnt quite have hte time or focus, so I just modified the Trophy XD

I've been working on this every since the contest was announced and put as much time as I could into it. I'm not an expert in making comics so most of the pages are just two-panel full.  There are some panels I still want to continue to work on -- like that loping panel... It bothers me -- so I might go over those again after the contest. Otherwise, I'm satisfied with how things came out.

XJ9, known as Jenny Wakeman by day, has mega evolved into WJ9 !!

 

 

(I didn't have time to make a pic that didn't look like shit I apologize)

 

You can't tell in this sketch, but WJ9 has colors inverted from her normal appearance. Her metallic skin is purple to match that of the werehog, and her hair is now white, much like her mother's. In fact, I purposefully stylized her hair to look like that of Nora Wakeman. Jenny's eyes are also supposed to be red to match her mother's red glasses.

 

As WJ9, Jenny trades most of her complex gadgetry for that of malleable metal. She can stretch and expand them much like our good ol' werehog can. Although she was incredibly strong to begin with, her display of strength in this form has become a little more... terrifying, to say the least.

For my entry I decided to Werehogify NetHack. I'm sure you are now thinking "what in the name of sanic is NetHack?". Well, it's a text-based game from decades ago. It's a Roguelike/Dungeon crawler in which rooms and monaters are represented by ASCII characters. It's free, check it out if you want (Be warned, it's insanely hard).

 

The player character is a @ symbol, and monsters are represented by various other letters.

 

After weeks of being indecisive about what to do, I got this idea, and about 8 hours of work later, I had created this little animation; I call it WereHack:

I made it in Blender, and you can get the .blend file here (be warned, due to time constraints I had to do some unorthodox stuff with the bone animation). I know this can't really compete with anime or memes, but I had a lot of fun doing it and I hope to participate in other contests like this should they arise. This is my first time doing organic modeling too, so I learned a lot in that department (hint: The subsurface modifier is your friend).

Last year at this point, it was just myself and the staff team that decided which were the top three entries in terms of creativenessnessness that ultimately won the shiny werehog and moon badges. But fo'get it I'm shaking it up a bit this year >:U

 

So I need YOU, THE PEOPLE WHO ENTERED, to help me decide who's got the most creative entries this year! So here's how it'll go down:

 

1. PM me a quick list of your favorite 3 from this year's contest, in order of your most loved to 3rd most loved.  Please title the PM "Werehog Contest Vote". While I know everyone will want to pick the most shiny ones possibly, just keep in mind that it's based on creativity, since that's way more rad than anything else in my book.

 

2. Feel free to vote for your own, but only one please if you did more than one. It's ok to love your material, but I don't want an edge for those who did more (in that sense of tallying and whatnot), but I don't want to weed a bunch of "1 votes" possibly since everyone only voted themselves.

I'd like to do away with that for a more "badge" looking thing and the 1-Up Werehog couldn't get any cooler in this category! (psst nepenthe if you want this instead go ahead and change it/I can for ya lmao)

Incase you haven't noticed already returning participants, your old "Chocolate?" badge for entering more than one times was upgraded to the more shiny version that meshes better with the other themed badges. Without any more delay, congratulations to everyone who participated in the Werehog-ify Anything Contest this year! It was really fun to bring it back from last year after some talk about it wanting to return, and definitely turned out just as fun. Had a blast powering through the pages seeing what crazy things you guys came up with, with quite a few that really dropped my jaw in awe. After counting the votes I think just about every damn near person got at least one vote for their top 3 favorites, so that was extremely neat to see, <3. That said, in the end there were quite a few close calls, and for awhile while I was counting was even an intense 3-way tie going on. It finally settled in the end, but by damn was it close.

Nepenthe once again nailed it with another fantastic entry this year. The short clip was well animated and smooth, and really damn cute if I might add haha. A real original look on the character we all know and love in more than one way, and a super d'aw/lols at the end of it. Awesome job Nepenthe!

When I first saw it I almost died LOL. Everyone has a strange love for the common kitchen appliance it seems, so what better idea than to transform it into a dark blue monster that spews fuzzy toast. Sitting comfortably on any shelf, it's not going anywhere with those sturdy spiky shoe-base. Be like your hero Dark Gaia and have a kitchen as fabulous as he does with the weretoaster today! Most badass Inferno!

Holy hell this one. Starting off extremely epic like the movie's general tone, it looks like most of us agreed that this was definitely a contender! Seeing the doggy Gypsy Danger in actual action through comic was stellar, and not to forget super lols as the comic went on. Extremely creative on the hilarious ways of delivering brutal blows to Kaiju in forms of common cutesy typical dog actions XD. May final-blowing chew toys live on forever. Super rad YoshiUnity! You are this year's most wolfiest of werehogs!

Wow... I mean... WOW! This is -- heh -- this is AWESOME!  Call me crazy, but I think my avatar expresses how I feel perfectly right now!

 

Seriously, this is great! No one ever knows what to expect when ever entering a contest, so I didn't see this coming at all. Still, it was exciting enough to encourage me to try something I'm not all too familiar with. I mean, I love to draw and paint. (You know I never shut up about it...) But making a comic? Even making the panels made me nervous. And despite wanting to go back over a few things even now, I'm proud with how it came out and had a lot of fun making it. Plus, I love me some Pacific Rim!

 

Though what made the contest even more fun were all the awesome entries from everyone here. "A contest is only as good as the entries that are submitted", I always say... starting now.  Look, we had sketches, paintings, comics, animation and 3D art submitted. A few wanted to write stories and submit songs if they had the time. So it's moments like this that really makes me appreciate the variety of talent of this site. Whenever I have the time, I'd be honored to talk with quite a few of you to get some pointers on how to improve my skills or to learn something completely new!

 

Kissing all of your other cheeks now, creativity was the name of the game here and I can see why it was so damn close. Hell, it's why I gave every entry a like on here. Whether by design, idea, action or all the above, every entry here had something about them that stood out and was deserved the win. And it's that amount of creativity that makes me eager for a third Werehog contest next year.

 

Congrats to both Inferno and Nepenthe for placing 2nd and 3rd! Congrats to Scarz, Diogenes and Indigo Rush for getting Honorable Mention! Thank you Wolfy for making this contest and thanks again to everyone who entered!
