So it's like Origin, if you get banned from XBL you'll lose all access to your XONE games. Whoops sorry, you'll lose your "licenses" to play your games. Buy this console and you'll be walking on thin ice. Seriously.

Ouch, that'd be one fucked up situation.

There are many things wrong with that policy with that as it is, but Microsoft's history of banning people for stupid and/or accidental reasons makes it even worse.  And then there's their new reputation system that's just BEGGING to be abused by trolls, and you've got a recipe for disaster.

I'm okay with somebody wanting to buy the XBox One. If I lived right in the middle of North-America where the broadband is strong as an ox, and completely dependable, and I had so much money that I could safely invest in a game I might not enjoy past a few weeks, and I had no friends I couldn't coax into playing my games solely in my house on my profile, and I was really into the handful of exclusives, and I just couldn't get enough of the sweet taste of Mountain Dew along with my favourite snack of Doritos...

...then I'd probably buy an XBox One.

It's really a shame that none of the above applies to me.

There's a thread over on GAF about how the PC's running demos of the Xbone games at E3 had cards which are twice as powerful as what will be in the 'bone. They weren't AMD cards, either...

4/10. Textures on arse are blurred to shit. Do better next time, MS, or see me after class.

Yeah sure it was running on the PC BUT, they did say that the PC has the same specs as the Xbox One...although it would be better if they played it straight from the console like Sony did.

All of those apply to me and I still don't want one.

Shadzter, I'm really not trying to spite you in any way, but could you please make a case for why Xbox One has your patronage? I'm not condescending here, and I hope I don't sound like it, but could you please make your own personal "why Xbox is for me" post?

For one thing he is interested in the exclusives the Xbox One has to offer as expressed in his status in his profile feed.

Kareemadeem summed it up. I don't agree with the restrictions of the system, but I buy consoles for games and Xbox One has exclusive games that I'm interested in. I'll probably end up with all consoles again eventually, like I did this past generation. Next, I plan on getting a Wii U, especially since Bayonetta 2, Super Smash Bros and Mario Kart are on the way next year, then I'll get a PS4 when more exclusive games are revealed.

I've said it before and I'll say it again- it doesn't matter how much I like a product, I'm all for boycotting it if the company's practices and policies are so utterly abhorrent and I think others should be doing the same.

Lucky for me in this case the only part of the Xbone I like is the controller.

Microsoft, in general, has truly abhorrent practices. That is right, folks. Not only is Microsoft stealing your consumer rights, but they are also willing to paralyze African children with false vaccinations that were supposed to cure Meningitis, and once they found out that it doesn't work, they try to cover it up by paying off the government of Chad into concealing evidence by having the government pay off the parents of victims.

I'll get off my soapbox now.

Looking back, it's just so hilarious that they tell us to look at the game publishers, fingerpointing at them that they will be the ones blocking you from trading in your games. Yes Microsoft, they designed your console to make a 24 hour check in and block trade ins.

Then we have this. Be careful while you go online and visit those lobbies, if you do something that seems stupid or something that wasn't intentional, you are at risk to saying goodbye to your licenses. An unexpected reversal from your bank? Account blocked. No more games.

You got to feel for Microsoft though. It seems that after all this anti-consumer practices, bad support, bad PR, Adam Orth, blah blah blah, they still got people to preorder their console. Not that it's good news but...

Pretty much this.

I mean no offense to Shadzter, but I don't care if SEGA goes Xbox One exclusive for all of their Sonic games, I would never support such a system.  Isn't there a law or some kind of legal ruling that allows the owner of a product to buy, loan and resell the object he purchased? You can't just shock the system like that, you need to go with the flow at a slow and steady pace if you want to change how games are dealt with. If you want to turn something that's supposed to be fun and enjoyable into a licensing nightmare, at least have the common courtesy to be tactful about it.

They've already backtracked on this one. They won't actually say what the policy is for Xbone, instead they just link to how game licensing works on it.

As I already said, the specs are not the same in those PCs. They're far higher that the Xbone. When MS did this with the 360 at the E3 before its release, the PCs they used were, if anything, under-powered, which at least allowed us to see that the games on show back then were at least capable of delivering what people were playing. This is the reverse of that situation... and it's probably a bit insulting to AMD that their cards, being that they'll be in the Xbone, weren't being used in these demo set-ups.

I would say repeatedly keeping silent about specfic details is hurting the XBone's reception, but so far all the actual facts have done just as much damage. It's a rare case where letting the media assume the worst is better than coming clean.

Better like being run over by a car instead of a train.

I wish they'd shut the fuck up about cloud power. If it can't be calculated client-side, offline, on my console, then I don't want it (Unless it's a MMO which is a different case entirely). When I watched Microsoft's E3 conference, and I saw Forza 5, I thought "wow, this looks pretty cool". Then they started going on about "the power of the cloud" and how it "enhances" the game's features. I and the people I was watching with groaned audibly. It's probably just a way to justify forcing a singleplayer game to be connected to the internet.

The Cloud is the new Blast Processing. As soon as you accept it into your life as the God Mode of power that it is, the sooner you can prove to people why your console is better than the SNES Wii U.

The last time The Cloud was this powerful, it was dictating commandments to Moses atop Mt. Sinai.

They obviously retracted the statement so they will not receive more backlash. But it's too late now because it's news'd everywhere.

It's going to be true on what they originally said, you don't own the games anymore, you rent/license them. Your purchases are tied to your XBL account. Can you sign in to your XBL account when you are banned? Don't think so. You have to be signed in to play your games.

While this is bad, there is an actual positive from this. A real cheater/hacker would have to be careful otherwise he'll lose his licensed games and would have to repurchase the games again.

This is ridiculous, Microsoft keeps shooting themselves in the foot so many times, theirs no foot left to shoot, only a broken bone!

They should, no NEED to set things strate or they will get dominated by Sony this fall.  I personally getting a PS4 in the future, but I hope Microsoft get there shit together because otherwise many franchises 360 fans loved like Fozza, Halo, and Fable will be gone when they switch to the PS4 :(

The only way Microsoft is ever going to go back on its seemingly set-in-stone policies is if consumers votes with their wallets and ignore the Xbox One, buying instead a PS4 or Wii U. The longer and worse the sales slump, the more likely Mattrick is to be ousted, and the more likely the restoration of our consumer rights on MS' next console will be.

I can't see the future being so rosy, though; more than likely the system will sell well enough over the short and medium terms to allow MS to justify the continuation of its policies. The longer-term effect, however, may be that sales figures never get so high as to allow claims of any kind of victory over Sony, or even Nintendo, which may eventually necessitate a review and eventual watering down or gradual dismantling of those policies.

For the sake of balance...

Get out your salt shakers but an anonymous engineer on the Xbox One team has taken to Pastebin to help clear up a few misunderstandings about Xbox One's DRM. In short, Microsoft wanted to bring the concept of Steam to the Xbox.

The DRM around the Xbox One has certainly caused a bit of controversy since its announcement but if the Pastebin post is to be believed, Microsoft actually has gamers' best interests at heart. The post talks about Steam's beginnings and how many didn't actually like the service at first, adding that it wasn't until Steam started offering insane deals on games that consumers adopted the platform.

Microsoft is apparently trying to bring that same model to the console with the Xbox One that is dramatically different to what the consumer is accustomed too. It's a lofty bet, but one that Microsoft is willing to take to help spur on digital distribution of console games. Posted below is the entire post:

 >The thing is we suck at telling the story. The whole point of the DRM switch from disc based to cloud based is to kill disc swapping, scratched discs, bringing discs to friends house, trade-ins for shit value with nothign going back to developers, and high game costs. If you want games cheaper then 59.99, you have to limit used games somehow. Steam's model requires a limited used game model.

    >The thing is, the DRM is really really similar to steam... You can login anywhere and play your games, anyone in your house can play with the family xbox. The only diff is steam you have to sign in before playing, and Xbox does it automatically at night for you (once per 24 hours)

    >It's a long tail strategy, just like steam. Steam had it's growing pains at the beginning with all it's drm shit as well. [...] For digital downloads steam had no real competition at the time, they were competing against boxed sales. At the time people were pretty irate about steam, (on 4chan too...) It was only once they had a digital marketplace with DRM that was locked down to prevent sharing that they could do super discounted shit.

    >Think about it, on steam you get a game for the true cost of the game, 5$-30$. On a console you have to pay for that PLUS any additional licenses for when you sell / trade / borrow / etc. If the developer / publisher can't get it on additional licenses (like steam), then they charge the first person more. [...] If we say "Hey publishers, you limit game to 39.99, we ensure every license transfer you get 10$, gamestop gets 20$" that is a decent model... Microsoft gets a license fee on first and subsequent game purchases, compared to just first now? That's a revenue increase.

    >Competition is the best man, it helps drive both to new heights. See technology from the Cold War. If we had no USSR, we'd be way worse off today. TLDR: Bring it on Steam smile.png

    2/4

    >Yeah we passed that around the office at Xbox. Most of us were like "Well played Sony, Well played". That being said they are just riding the hype train of ZOMG THEY ARE TRYING TO FUCK US FOR NO REASON. Without actually thinking about how convienent it would be for the majority of the time to not find that disc your brother didn't put back... [...] just simpleminded people not seeing the bigger picture. Some PS4 viral team made them all "U TOOK R DISCS" and they hiveminded.

    >Everyone and their mother complains about how gamestop fucks them on their trade ins, getting 5$ for their used games. We come in trying to find a way to take money out of gamestop, and put some in developers and get you possibly cheaper games and everyone bitches at MS. Well, if you want the @#$@ing from Gamestop, go play PS4.

    >The goal is to move to digital downloads, but Gamestop, Walmart, Target, Amazon are KIND OF FUCKING ENTRENCHED in the industry. They have a lot of power, and the shift has to be gradual. Long term goal is steam for consoles. [...] If you always want to stay with what you have, then keep current consoles, or a PS4. We're TRYING to move the industry forwards towards digital distribution... it'sa bumpy road

    >Publishers have enourmous power. Microsoft is trying to balance between consumer delight, and publisher wishes. If we cave to far in either direction you have a non-starting product. WiiU goes too far to consumer, you have no 3rd party support to shake a stick at. PS4 is status-quo. XB1 is trying to push some things, at the expense of others. We have a vision, we'll see if it works in the coming years

    >Living room transformation. We want to own the living room. Every living room TV with an XBox on input one. It's the thing that gives the signal to your TV, everything is secondary. The future, where games, TV, internet telephony, all that shit happens magically on some huge ass screen with hand / voice gestures... That's our goal.

    3/4

    >Google TV + PS4 + Minority report level gestures, that combined with a sick second screen experience (which is really hot for TV, I know I know.. tv tv tv tv tv... but it's fucking sick when you have it). Games will be the same, there are more exclusives to MS then PS atm, and Kinect 2 makes Kinect 1 look like a childs toy.

    >By default it's on, listening for "Xbox On". You can turn it off tho, and turn the console like OFF off. OFF off is required for Germany / other countries that require it (no vampire appliances) [...] It has to be plugged in for the console to post. You can turn off everything it does from the settings. Think of it like airplane mode for the iPhone. You can't just unplug the cellular radio, but you can turn it off.

    >Instead of 10mins, is 24hrs for your console, and 1 or 2 at a friends house. Really the majority of people have a speck of internet at least once a day. And if you don't. Don't buy an Xbox 1. Just like if you didn't have a broadband connection don't get Live, and if you don't have an HDTV the 360 isn't that great for you either. New tech, new req. This allows us to do cool shit when we can assume things like you have a kinect, you have internet, etc.

    >Current plan is basically you're fucked after 24 hours. Yeah... I know. Kind of sucks. I believe they will probably revist the time period and / or find a diff way to "call in" to ensure you haven't sold your license to gamestop or something... but there is no plan YET. I'm hoping the change it, but I don't work on that so I don't have much influence there /sigh

    >If the power goes out you ain't playing shit. I'm assuming you mean the internet goes out but you have power for TV and Xbox. Yes, You're fucked for single player games. Again, that's the PoR (Plan of record), but I expect it to change after the e3 clusterfuck

    >What fee? There is no fee to play your games at your friends house. Never has, never will. Even x360 digital downloads could do that.

    4/4

    >The cloud capabilities is the shit they like the most. We basically made a huge cloud compute shit and made it free. What people are doing with it is kind of cool. THe original intention was to get all the Multiplayer servers not requiring 3rd party costs (Like EA shutting down game servers to cut costs), as well as taking all the games that servers hosted by the clients (Halo, etc), and have all that compute done in the cloud allowing more CPU cycles for gameplay. That will really expand what developers can do. Anything that doesn't need per frame calculation and can handle 100ms delays can be shifted to the cloud. That's huge.

    >SmartGlass + IE is going to be pretty freaking sweet. 1 finger cursor, 2 finger direct manip. Basically if you think of a laptop trackpad where your phone/ slate is the trackpad and the monitor is your TV... it's that. The tech is there, just needs to be applied. There is some really cool shit going on with Petra + controllers that pairs people with controllers. So if person with controller two trades controlers with controller 1, their profiles magically switch. It's sick. What does this matter? Now if you lean left/right it knows which person is leaning, even if 4 people are all int he same room. It's awesome.

    >New service using Azure for cloud compute. Allows developers to not use clients for hosting multiplayer servers, or other tasks that do not require per frame calcuations. It's pretty sweet.

    >Honestly, if you care about anything other then pure games AT ALL. Xbox 1 > PS4. If all you do is play games, and nothing else, PS4.

This was all from the Microsoft engineer that was on /b/ last night.

    >It's not worth my time to prove it, or risk my Job. I work in Studio A, 40th ave in Redmond, Wa. The thai place in the studio cafeteria has double punch wednesdays. Go ahead and call them and verify if you want.

Last I checked Amazon, I saw that the number one and three ordered consoles were the PS4. People ordered the PS4 prior to the reveal of price so I guess Amazon hasn't added those people together yet. It looks like to me that the PS4 is kicking ass in America.
